Tina:
It had sounded like a good idea, a fun idea. Hike her way across America to her new job on the west coast. She had three months to do it in. Though limited in funds, it would work, if she was careful. But she hadn't counted on the real world, and real people who weren't as friendly and nice as the ones in her small town. Ordering off the diner menu she sat waiting for it. Tired and exhausted. Having put in many miles since her early morning breakfast. It was late and there was only her, the trucker who had shown her the place and the guy behind the counter, who had taken her order. The trucker watched her stuff while she used the bathroom and then had left. Wishing her luck.
The guy at the counter seemed quiet. Wolfing down the burger and fries, and the super thick chocolate shake. Damn good for a little diner.
"Is there a hotel around here? A cheap one though."
He looked puzzled.
"I thought you were with him, jerking his thumb out the window at the truck leaving.
"No, he just told me about this place, then watched my stuff while I washed in your bathroom. I don't even know his name."
Slipping the bill toward me I smiled. Hmm. $5.52. Damn, not bad for a full meal.
Turning I dug into my knapsack. And dug, and dug, then paniced. Squatting on the floor and dumping it. My wallet was gone. I checked all the pockets on my coat and shorts.
"I thought you were together cause he was in your bag while you were gone." He stood above me, his arms crossed, the loo on his face showed he thought this was a show, a trick.
I stood, unable to speak a word. He had stolen everything. My money, my cards, all my id's. A tear slipped down my face as I turned to the nice man. Not knowing what to say.
