Well I broke a personal rule in work and today and may now have to pay for it.

My rule? Because I know that I'm not going to get any backing from my boss, I keep my mouth shut.

I was running my tail off with a total of 11 patients. (This after working this weekend with 14 and 15 patients.) I was handed the new schedule and saw the R.N. making the schedule had assigned me an extra shift in the middle of a week next month. It wouldn't have been so bad except she had forgotten to either ask me about it, or even mention it to me.

I'm assigned to rooms 88-99. On three seperate occasions I get called to other assignments to do lifting. (The first was to transfer a patient from a bed to a stretcher. The second was to move a fridge from one room to another and the third was to pull a bed out of the room.) On all three occasions the Aide for that assignment was sitting at the Nurses Station playing on the Internet.

My co-workers both came into work ten and fifteen minutes late, and nothing was said.

Then the Unit Clerk, who used to work the floor as an Aide, started spouting off her mouth about the scheduling of the Aides. She was telling anyone who would listen that there should be no set schedules for the Aides, they should work the hours and days they are needed regardless of what they may need or want for time off. (She works Monday through Friday 1500 to 2300.) She also went on to state that we should go back to the old 8 hour shifts.

I kind of lost it then. I asked her why it mattered to her. She didn't work the floor and therefore should have no say in the matter of the Aides Scheduling.

She replied that I shouldn't expect to only work my three 12 hour shifts each week. She told me that I should be willing to work four and five 12 hour shifts a week, both days and nights. I informed her tat she might be willing to do so but I had a life outside of work.

She then commented on my grumbling a bit about being pulled from my assignment to do the lifting for the other Aides as they played on the computer, so I told her that maybe she should risk blowing out her back, or otherwise injuring herself so others can sit and goof off. I turned and walked away.

I found out later that she had written a note for my boss and slid it under her door while she complained to the Charge Nurse about my insolent manner and my not being a team player. I'm sure that I will hear about this soon enough. Who knows, I may even get fired.

Maybe it's time for me to look for another facility to work for. Maybe the Non-profit Hospital just a bit to the north of me.

It's true you're underappreciated there, but I doubt you get fired. They're shooting themselves in the foot if you are.

From your posts about your job and the quality care you give, they'd be idiots to fire you. Oh yeah. Never mind...

Doesn't your hospital's CEO know who you are, vis the psychologist that you helped a couple months back?

Good for you, Cat. When people are being exceptionally foolish I see no reason for you not to call them on it.

You cannot always be silent.
There is a limit to what anyone should have to deal with.
Simple and to the point.

I think it is time to, very politely, to start complaining to the higher ups about what is going on. If they are only hearing what the assholes are complaining about they may make a wrong decision. Here is to hoping that she is struck by lightning sometime soon. Maybe she could be standing next to your boss when it happens!?:D

Cat , I think you and I work at the same facility. With us 1500 to 2300 shift, there is a person I will call Mr. X, who is a narcissistic, sexist, prejiduced prick who has a heart of gold and a gentle manner when it comes to the patients. (I have a love/hate relationship with him for this) He Is intelligent, observant and has much experince in the medical field. So, he is the team leader every night that I work ( I purposely made my schedule mirror his due to the lack of skill the other shift leader's incompetance) because of the shortage of aides we take care of 41 patients with 4 or 5 people in stead of the required six. and X gets stuck with at least 28 patient meds to do each night. This puts him in a bitchy mood, and on the rare occasion will lash out at one of the floor workers verbally. ( personally, they need the tongue lashing at that gossip ridden backstabbing place of employment that I work at. ) then I found out my scheduler Put me on a floor with heavy lifting Ie hoyer lift with the two aides I LEAST get along with.

I bite my tongue, but sometimes I just want to tell these two ladies to friggin help out!!!!!! Shut the hell up and do the work.

To top it off, management changes month to month!

I take it that this isn't a unionize hospital?

I would look up the labor codes for Florida and see what the legal time alotment between shifts are. If Im not mistaken, here you are required 24 hours after 3x12's.

Just printing off the labour info and tossing it on her desk will set a statement in place-she knows you are willing to take it further if you have to.

In the mean time start looking for something new.
Good luck,
C:rose:

Having had a day to think about it I have the feeling that I have screwed up on this one. I should have kept my yap shut.

I know that I'm going to hear about this come this weekend or at the latest Monday. What the results will be are anyones guess but it will most likely be one of three things. (Or a combination of all three.)

A) A Verbal Reprimand. (Either from the boss or those who feel they are in charge, or both.)

B) A written reprimand.

C) Firing.

I thought there were some of the doctors that you get along with. Maybe you could put them in the picture.

If they fire you, they're fools.

You do too much good work there.
And on a cynical note - if they do, they'll have to find someone else willing to work under the same conditions.

If they're not total idiots, they realize that they have a problem.

And if they are, you'll never be happy working for them, anyway.

my boss at the law firm was horrible. he was a creepy pervert who grabbed at me, and asked me for sexual favors.

when I complained to my husband about it, he went hysterical on ME saying I better not show that I'm upset about it, I better no loose my job because I'm so stupid as to be upset about it.

it continued. it got worse, I complained more.. then my hsuband switched to the tactic of: maybe I should give in, I might get a pay raise.

I'm so GLAD I'm divorcing that SOB and I'm VERY glad I don't have to work for that asshole any more.

moral? I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and miserable.

If you're being treated like shit, quit and don't look back!

And Cat, Goddess, how are things on those respective fronts?

My boss got her favorite Aide fired by the C.E.O. of the Hospital and I was informed that the Chief Nursing Officer would be reviewing my work from now on. My boss is now unable to discipline me without it being reviewed.

Is this a good thing? We shall see. I have the feeling that this will only result in my being watched more.

Your boss may hate you, but it looks like someone in admin there knows your worth, Cat.
