It’s that time of year again.

With a wide grin, I fold up the hire notice in my back pocket I look at the property I’ve rented for the next few weeks, although its real purpose won't happen until the very end of October.
And this year, it’s certainly more than a house.

I felt the times have changed and so a new venue was in order.

And so this charmingly spooky castle, in a misty valley, will be the setting for my annual Hallowe’en party. From the tour the agent gave me I know it’ll be perfect. Creepy corridors and hundreds of rooms including a large ballroom for dancing and plenty more besides.

The previous four Hallowe'ens have a host of spookily brilliant memories related to them, I'm sure this year will be no different, and I want to make sure I give my guests time to work on their costumes if nothing else!

The grin on my face growing every second, I hand a stack of handwritten envelopes to the driver that brought me, addressed to any and all who frequent the SRP lounge. He’ll post them for me when he gets back to town.
The invitation inside is carefully handwritten to match the envelope and reads as follows…

HAPPY HALLOWE’EN!

You are cordially invited to attend Britwitch’s Hallowe’en Party!
The party will run from Wednesday 29th October - Sunday 2nd November 2014

There will be suitably spooky fun running both day and night for the whole week so do drop by if and when you have chance…it’s my favourite holiday and I couldn’t let it go by without doing something!

Hoping to see you and your chosen costume there!

Best wishes,

Britwitch

P.S. Feel free to bring anything to party that you like and any and all help is welcome to help me prepare beforehand! :D

As his car pulls away and drives noisily over the cobbled bridge, I head inside the castle.

I need to work out just how many pumpkins I’ll need - besides those waiting at the Autumn Retreat for me to collect, how many hundreds of candles and lanterns to light the windows and rooms beyond the heavy oaken doors...I’ll need streamers and fake cobwebs to add to the real ones hanging down here and there. Not to mention all the carriages I want to book in order to bring my guests the last few miles down twisting lanes to the party.

There’s food and drink to arrange and of course, there's my own costume to think about…now, what to be this year....

I would like to come to the party. Is there a theme this year?

smiles and looks up from her notebook full of Halloween decoration ideas

No, no theme...besides that of Halloween.

winks

Come dressed however you'd like or as whatever you'd like. Scary or sexy, abstract or defined! Your costume is your choice and I look forward to seeing it, and you, at the party!

Ah, I'll come as a pirate then. Maybe not the most original costume. But the one I feel closest too. Not a Captain Jack Sparow type. More of a real life pirate right out of the history books. Maybe a Captain Henry Morgan type.

bustles through the door with her arms full, sparing just a moment to glance around with a slow spreading smile of approval

"Brit!"

setting several trays of refreshments down on a table as her voice echoes off the high ceiling of the gloomy corridor

"I love the new venue! Having a busy day, as usual, but I just wanted to stop in to drop off a few treats - I trust they'll keep, in an enchanted place like this..."

she pauses to hug the lovely hostess and press a kiss to her cheek

"...aaand, I wanted to stash my costume, if I could, please? I can't promise I'll be in on the 29th, but I will be making an appearance over the weekend - in typically gruesome garb, as I now have a reputation to maintain!"

grinning

"So we'd better get our kisses in now!"

leaning in for another, more lingering taste of the witch's too-tempting lips, then turning on her heel with a faint smiling blush and a sigh

"But I hear a distant wailing that is not ghouls or goblins, only a little boy who has napped long enough for one afternoon, so I'm off again for now, sweetness! Save me some tricks and treats - I'll be back for the Witching Hour!"

The word of the day is chalk. A theme that will become clear to her guests on the night but as a familiar face distracts Brit from her task, she has a smudge of white on one cheek and on the tip of her freckled nose.

"Alice!" A tight hug and a happy smile.

"Oh wow! Those all look delicious and yes, have no fear, things here will keep beautifully until the big night...or rather, nights." Brit giggles, taking the costume carefully and refraining from peeking. Surprises are always better than sneak previews. She knows whatever Alice wears it'll be amazing.

Then before she can ask after her much missed friend, soft warm lips find hers and for a second or two...Brit kind of forgets where she is. Beaming hazily she smiles as Alice pulls away.

"I'll make sure at least one of my hours is set aside for you." A wink of bright blue eye that then drops to roam over her figure as she heads back out.

"Hopefully we'll manage to bump into each other over the Halloween weekend." A determined nod before Brit returns to her task, chalk moving slowly and gracefully before her. Her smile growing with every stroke.

Wanders into the awing castle, grinning with anticipation for the holiday.

Brit!! This looks amazing! I'll try and drop by for the actual event. Just in case I don't . . .

Gives her a big hug

Hope you have a good time!

Starry! Uni girl! Have you just stumbled, bleary-eyed, from the riotous bacchanals of Fresher's Month?

Good to see you. Hope all is well and lovely.

Oh, and I should love to come, dear Brit, if I may. My costume plans are currently inchoate, since I can't get away from my lust for this, which is not remotely appropriate but so very, very gorgeous.

DES

Runs and tackles him to the floor affectionately

Ahem, I mean, yes, 'tis I! I know, I must look a mess . . .

Having a relaxed night for the first time in like forever, so thought I'd take the chance to see all you lovely people! Hope you've been well?

Offensively well, thank you. Not so much as a consumptive red dot on my cheeks or a hectic flush. And all the better for seeing you, of course. Is everything in the garden lovely?

The university is a paradise, rivers of knowledge are there, arts and sciences flow from thence. Council tables are Horti conclusi, (as it is said in the Canticles) Gardens that are walled in, and they are fontes signati, wells that are sealed up; bottomless depths of unsearchable counsels there

Absurdly lovely, thank you! Still feels a little surreal . . . but I really love it.

Still recovering from fresher's flu/possible Ebola, but overall I'm coping well and slowly adapting to London life! I've missed this place, though!

Right, 2am . . . perfect time for a cup of tea, I think. Who needs sleep.

Tea would be perfect, thank you, although in answer to your question, those of us having to be up at seven tomorrow morning need sleep, and I shall have to disappear. I'll take it up with me, if I may.

But I am delighted to hear that university agrees with you so well, in spite of your incipient Ebola.

Brit wanders through the main hall, a large cardboard box under her arm. The ends of several ribbons and crêpe streamers of black and white fluttering out of the back as she does.

More potential guests, fantastic!

She beams, waving and hugging those who've stopped by to RSVP in person.

Not long now!

Need any help?

Brit dear. Do you need any help? We Yanks are always about look'n ta help some one....aren't we?

Yeah, one of the scariest thing for us to hear is. " Hi, I'm from the goverment and here to help."

*Peeking in*

I must really want to party, because I keep thinking that I've missed the party.

Now that I know that I haven't missed the party, I can't wait for the party to start! :D

I know the party starts on Wednesday. But is it a problem if we sample some of your booze a little early? *Opens a bottle of vodka and gin and pour it over some ice in a black lipped tumbler. "Ass kicker anyone?"

Go for it but don't sample too much.

Brit winks while she arranges candles in a huge centrepiece on one of the large tables in the hallway

smiles shyly at a Fish

I do what I can. I am a fan of fun after all.

a wink and a hug

Brit pulls the main doors closed while the final preparations are made, whispering with a widening grin

Tonight!
