1. The 2016 Oxford handbook which covers rules etc, doesn't mention any of this.
2 The Students Union has no authority anyway
3 The Oxford Union (which is a private club not the Student Union) has a long record of taking the mickey out of various publications with false or partially false information.
4 Studying French or any latin language would be a bit tricky without gender - even old English would have a few problems.![]()
The Oxford University Students Union stated categorically today that no such leaflet or instruction exists, not would they attempt to introduce such. Apparently, The Daily Telegraph, that bastion of truthfulness and fair and rational comment, decided to run with this piece of misinformation instead of checking either their sources or their own fact-checker drones, leaving it instead to half-wits to trumpet it around as if it were established fact. It's the monkey/typewriter scenario; if enough idiots repeat enough nonsense enough times, it becomes embedded in popular consciousness as something 'everyone knows' to be incontrovertible fact.
Of course, the bigots, idiots, racists and just plain stupid are going to stick to their 'all Brits are PC pansies' mentality, citing this arrant nonsense as one of their proofs, because facts won't sway them when they know they have access to ultimate truth...
But OGG and BUTTERS approve of the idea.
Decades ago we went through the Miss/Mrs/Ms thing. Initially, it was used when a woman's marital status wasn't known. Ms. was ambigous enough that it was acceptable to anyone.
So, it's possible ze would come into use the same way--when someone's gender was uncertain and unimportant in the context.

The word wimp is already suitable for such use.
Except that the whole thing is fake news!
The story relating to Oxford might have been, but use of the word is not fake. I doubt it will catch on like Ms. did. "Not bloody likely," and similar statements were commonly used against Ms. too, but here we are in the 21st Century. Many are still being dragged here from the 19th Century.

Words change and evolve.
I might believe in 'ze' when women campaign to have sewer manholes retitled 'personholes' and demand to use them.
The whole deal begs the question, WHATS REAL? Why cant anyone make any claim they please, and get instant validation? Say, JIM JOHNSON IS A BRAINIAC! or JIM JOHNSON is a sweetheart! Or Jim Johnson is a giant and bulletproof!
Start by not reading any Murdoch publicationThe whole deal begs the question, WHATS REAL? Why cant anyone make any claim they please, and get instant validation? Say, JIM JOHNSON IS A BRAINIAC! or JIM JOHNSON is a sweetheart! Or Jim Johnson is a giant and bulletproof!
Oxford University lost its claim to being authoritative, 'neutral,' or objective, or even academic, when in the Thatcher era, they abandoned their previous tradition of guaranteeing children of past degree-holders from Oxford, a place, then scholastic or academic excellence as the next criterion - in favour firstly of, or for payment from the children of wealthy parents, mostly from the Middle East, and often, from criminal dictatorships around the world.
And that decision, let me tell you, for many an Oxford person, spelled 'THE END.'
I kid you not when I say that there have been more than one person from Oxford who threw their degree in the bin.
And anyone who wants to challenge me on this just plain doesn't know!
