LONDON -- The family of a young black man who died following a London police chase appealed for peace Saturday, a day after street protests over his death turned violent.

Relatives held a vigil outside an east London police station for 20-year-old Rashan Charles, who died in a hospital last week after he was pursued and apprehended by an officer in the capital's Hackney area.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the case and said it will consider whether any misconduct or crimes were involved.

Clashes broke out on the streets of east London late Friday as riot police tried to disperse protesters, who hurled bottles and fireworks at officers, barricaded a road with garbage cans and mattresses, and later set the objects on fire. Some held "Black Lives Matter" placards.

Scotland Yard said the violence overnight was "separate" from a peaceful protest at a police station earlier Friday.

At first I wasn't sure 'which' London .. UK or Ontario.

London, Ontario police have a relatively good rep in town. Chief has been grand marshal of PRIDE parade and officers are invited to attend even in uniform where other cities they are either not invited or asked not to wear uniforms. Black Londoners make up 2.4% of population. Our poor and underprivileged are predominantly white as is most of the city. Our cops are relatively colour-blind they are quite happy to rouse and bust anyone regardless of skin colour. Except for the bikers, gang activity is usually neighbourhood based not racial. Our crooks are quite colour-blind too. Far from perfect and natives might have reason to question my views perhaps.

That's why I was a bit surprised to see 'London' on a Canadian news site.

We even have the Thames River flow through town. Can't begin to list street names that are the same. We even have a Soho. South of Horton. A poorer area just about to become gentrified as old Victoria Hospital grounds are redeveloped.

Y'all missed out when the bridge went to AiryZoney.
