Peggy heard the whine from the left front of the car and knew the tire was going out. "Goddam," she said, not really caring if her daughter in the back heard. She knew she should have replaced the tire, but she had fallen further and further behind, and things had gotten to the point where it was go now or go never. So she went.
Fortunately there was a truck stop about a half-mile ahead. She limped along on the shoulder until the faded DEL'S TRUCK STOP and DINER sign beckoned. The angled the car over into a parking space, and stopped.
"Rachel, I'm going to go see if there's a mechanic here or someone who can change the tire. I don't have a spare. I'm hoping they sell tires here. Just stay in the car." The high-school senior nodded. "I'll be back."
Peggy hadn't anticipated having to get out before she had reached the beach. She was wearing a bikini, with shorts and a shirt that didn't completely hide her top. It would have to do. She wandered past the first building. Not having been to a truck stop before, she didn't realize most of the truckers were migrants. And the doorway she was going through led to the showers for the long-haul truckers, not the dining room or mechanic's desk...
