There is a UL that "rule of thumb" refers to an old common-law principle that a man was allowed to beat his wife so long as he used a stick no thicker than his thumb; but I should think the term actually derives from a ruler any carpenter would make before standardization of measures, using his thumb to make sure that at least every increment were the same length as every other even if it related to nothing else.
