I got an e-mail feedback from lit. It was one of the best one's I had ever gotten for my latest story. I was impressed on several levels. First, the writer told me that he had never used the feedback section before. Second he sung high praises on my story. Thirdly he was literate and had one real good suggestion for me to think about.

Then, when I went to move it to my feedback box I accidently hit the trash button. No problem I figure...I'll go to the trash and retrieve it. I really wanted to reply to him but I was short on time.

I hit the damn empty trash button instead of the 'trash' button that would have opened up that file so that I could etrieve it. Of course...it's gone now, and I can't remember his e-mail addy nor do I know of a way to let him know.

He said he had never written to an author before...now with no reply from me...will he ever write to any other author?

Dumb dumb dumb. I feel so stupid now.

I like to interact with person's who write to me about my stories. I wanted to reply to him when I had more time to put together a good response.

:(

So...anything remotely like this ever happen to you guys?

YES

Somehow I end up doing stupid things like that *all* the time!! Of course three days from then I won't remember a thing, but I'm air-headed that way.

Dear Curi,
Of course. Many times. I use the old fashioned method of sending a reply to EVERYONE on the InterNet. Takes a while, but, it works. As the Brits say, Jim's your auntie.

I did that once to an editor who was accepting one of my stories, and only wanted one minuscule change.

Trouble was, after accidentally deleting the email, I could not remember exactly what changes he wanted.

I went through my SENT MAIL to see to whom I had sent the story. Then I sent him an email explaining that my computer had crashed and destroyed mail, including one I had noticed was addressed from him. Could he please resend the last email he had sent to my address?

It worked, and eventually, the story was published.

Of course, this won't help you with your problem. It should however, provide you with the identity of someone to whom you can feel superior.

Only about ten times/day. I lost 3000 words in an essay (non-Lit) due to a series of misdirected synapses causing me to erase an email a few days back. Let me tell you, my monitor has gotten a lot of rounds of severe beating through the years.

It stings when it happens, but in the end, there is noonew to blame, so at least I tend to get over it pretty quick.

I just feel so damn bad though. The guy wrote with sincerity and then I mess up and can't reply to him. I am glad that I am not alone in this...um...accidental erasure. I have been kind of proud of the fact that I always answer anyone that gives me the address to do so. Ihave had quite a few follow all my work after that initial feedback response too.

I really hope he does respond to other writers and not feel that I ignored his feedback. I am sure I will get over this too...but I can see it is going to take a while.:)

first off what service do you use for email?

second did you trash the item via the recycle bin (if you have windows or via the delete of an email?)

If you have aol I know you can go to recently deleted items to see things deleted in the past 24 hrs. If not prehaps your servicer offers something similar.

You could add a header or footer to your next story and let the readers know that if they liked the first story, to let you know how your current story compares - maybe he will respond to that and you will recognize the style of his response.

It was at my yahoo addy...I looked right away but couldn't locate a 'safe' like the 24 hour thing. I am pretty sure it's gone.

ffreak...good idea...maybe if I just post a little note to ask him to write to me again?
