Since this seems to be the best place to ask TMI questions and get frank answers, here's my question.

For some reason, the last day or so, I've had a lot more bowel movements than usual. Not diahera by any means, but just a lot of them. Can't think of any dietary reason why, but anyways....

I'm getting a little sore and tender down there, likely from all the wiping, I'm guessing. any suggestions for something to make me feel a little less sore?

How about A+D ointment, the stuff commonly used on babies for irritation?

It's very inexpensive and soothing.

You might also try applying some fresh aloe to soothe and moisturize the area, plus speed the healing of any abrasions.

Takes a little courage to post that. So I'll suck some up and answer.

It's happened to me. When it does, I use those medicated cleansing pads. Tucks is the name I think. It has witchhazel in them. They're supposed to be good for hemorrhoids, but they work for general irritation and help get ya really clean.

Oh man! cant believe you asked and I cant believe I'm responding. Use what the babies use. Wet wipes followed with generous amounts of Desitin (zinc oxide)!

Most definately wet wipes of some kind! Makes the wiping less abrasive and irritating.

But, maybe you should go see the Dr with the change in bowel movements if it continues. Might be a sign that something is going on with your body. I dunno, better safe than sorry.... right?

Good Luck :D

The increase in movements can likely be sourced to a dietary change of some sort. Are you drinking more coffee than usual? And sensitivities to fruits or veggies that you may have consumed in the last week due to a craving? Even a favorite dish, regardless of sensitivity can cause upset of the intestines and increase movements. A change in stress levels can also be a factor.

As for the after affects, instead of wiping, try a blotting method, followed by a water wash. For lack of a better description, blotting will get the big stuff without the abrasive "wipe". Washing afterwards will remove the remnant irritants without abrasion, and then pat dry with a towel. Which brings up another possibility, have you changed your brand of toilet paper recently to something a little less soft/supple to the tushie? Single ply papers tend to be quite harsh where 2 ply brands tend to be softer and require less force to do the same work.

Until things normalize, try reducing coffee intake and increase fiber consumption.

Yep, sorbolene cream or any baby-cream is fine. I should know - I had an op there only 3 months ago. :D

As for being "too frequent" - I'd be checking your diet for foods which cause that. Prunes, licorice bran etc etc. If you can't think of a reason, is it possible you have a bit of a tummy bug? Have you been over seas ir eaten anything unusual lately? I hope it settles down for you.

Drink Metamucil twice a day. It won't give you runs and you'll void so completely in the mornings you'll barely have to wipe.

Which foods should a person focus on and which ones to avoid if you want hard dry movements?

hey if it turns out that its not the foods your eating go to your doctor and get tested for MRSA, its a germ that reguarly colonizes in a persons nose and can cause problems in your intestines.
IF there is any moucous in your bowels, get tested for C- diff. another bug but much worse. Both can be treated with antibiotics.

A balanced diet full of fruits, veggies, whole grains and plenty of water should produce healthy (i.e. not hard or dry) bowel movements.

If you continue to have trouble in this area, I'd encourage you to write down the amount of every single thing you put in your mouth for a couple of weeks. That includes vitamins/supplements and medications. Then, show your diary to your doctor and talk about what's likely causing the problem(s). Ask for a referral to a nutritionist and gastrointerologist, if necessary. It could be a sign of something serious, or may be as simple as an intolerance to certain foods.

It's good you're asking; GI problems are nothing to ignore.

I would definitely recommend the wet toilet paper/baby wipes. And sometimes being TOO aggressive with your *ahem* cleaning can lead to lots of problems. The anus makes it's own oils, and if you overclean yourself, you can end up with rashes and soreness...from a dietary standpoint, I would recommend increasing your fiber intake (to bulk up your stools) and drink more water (to soften them).

The thing is, bulk was normal. The softness/hardness normal. It was just NOT normal to have 6-8 in one day (as opposed to 1).

In retrospect, I think I might have had some kind of tummy bug that was relatively mild. Who knows. I'm feeling better today finally.

Metamucil pills

They even have calcium in them for women. Helps you go if that is the trouble or puts the brakes on if that is the problem.
