I just had a story rejected and the reason was, well, less than clear. But I think found it and I'd like to clarify it.

The text cites - properly and with credit - a specific novel, identifying and crediting the author.

I'm thinking this is the issue.

Normally there is a clue in the rejection - Its usually fairly non specific but that might give you a place to start.
In your citation is there link to the authors work - if so that may be the problem. But without more information i'm guessing.

What did the bounce message say?

Note: if you're quoting somebody else's work, attributing it is a good and ethical thing to do. But attributing it doesn't automatically give you the right to quote something that's protected by copyright.

The text of the message boiled down to this bullet point.
  • Were there URL links, site addresses, or other advertisements within the story?
Not super helpful.

I'm assuming referencing a work still available for sale trips "other advertisements".

Curious. I have a story that's been in limbo for several days now with a song quote, attributed to the artist.

And yet I also just recently published another story with a song quote no problem.

So now I don't know if that's why my other story is still pending or not.

Guess I'll find out.

The editor I pay for - for not Lit - had no issue. But, if that's the rule. 🤷‍♂️

That's it, then. Your replies suggest your story may have a link or a marketing statement off to another site. Remove that text and resubmit.

The site policy prohibits off-site marketing except in your Sig block, profile, and one forum thread "Books by Lit Authors." The only link allowed in a story is off to another Lit story.

If you've only quoted a line or two, you should be okay.

Don't see it as limbo, see it as "in the queue". It's a different mind set, requiring patience, rather than assuming neglect ;).

I personally think limbo is the right word, but I dont assume neglect - just that there are so many to get through it takes time.
I currently have 7 stories in the queue waiting publication. It certainly feels like limbo.
