Both Men and Women do it . . .

Umph.

And first comment I read is some dude claiming that "all male bodies look the same," which just goes to show you that he's never looked at them.

All male bodies look the same?

What makes me think the guy who said that is a slob who's idea of a workout is lifting a can of coors, and looking good is he decided to actually brush his hair?

Invariably the same slob who makes the remark "She'd be hot if she lost 20 pounds."

Sigh.

This is the kind of crap that gets me called a fag in bars, because I keep losing "man points"

My ex would walk into a new job and the bets would start immediately on whether or not he was gay-- because he looked fit, and dressed well. Hell yeah he dressed well-- it got him the ladies!

Well, I don;t really dress well, I'm a jeans, t-shirt or tank top type.

But I brush my hair, trim the beard, and work my ass off at the gym a few times a week. I'm 44 with a 32 waist and at my ideal weight with 7% body fat.

I'm not the prettiest gift under the tree, but I work hard to look as good as I can.

So between that and the fact I have a lot more female friends than male, and usually take their side in debates like this I'm a fag.

Problem for them-and what really makes me hated in certain places-is that they know me well enough to know I can kick their asses, so they can only say so much.

Well, there is this:

To test the idea, Gervais and her colleagues carried out two nearly identical experiments with a total of 227 undergraduate participants.

I'm not so sure I'd draw conclusions about how we, as an adult population, view men vs. women from such a small number of 18-22yos.

I mean . . . they are 18-22. How is that age group in any way representative of adulthood, in anything, but especially when it comes to anything even loosely related to sex?

Between hormones and insecurity, the findings aren't surprising, but I won't accept that men and women in the thirties, forties, fifties, etc. follow the same patterns on the basis of this study. Maybe they do, maybe they don't, but that isn't what the paper tested.

And I'll step off my research design soapbox now.

The late psychiatrist, Milton H. Erickson, MD, did a huge amount of work with people who had poor, body esteem, or were too critical of other peoples bodies. Erickson observed that most people carry around idealized imagery of how people oughta look, and these stereotypes created lotsa relationship problems. And so he worked to influence such people to change how they see others.

Erickson noted that most of us arent much to write home about if you examine us closely, and the wisest action is to learn to like the total person.

Years ago I became aware that many females I was immediately attracted to often became unappealing once I knew them better. So I made a decision to allow a little time to pass before I jumped one way or another. Sexual appeal truly is a shifting sand dune.

I love it when you make sensible reasoned opinions

As far as my opinion... I just think that it is a very male-centric society, so it's to be expected that a little male thinking rubs off on women.

I prefer pioneering to philosophizing.

I'll get back to you on both of those in about 20 years and see if you feel the same way. :D
