Hi Lit's,

I will be travelling to New England in September and would love to hear from any people living there, or thereabouts.

This will be my first time on American soil, so I'm rather excited! I will be flying into Boston and spending two weeks travelling by car around the New England area. I have a provisional route planned, but would welcome any suggestions.

Lit-wise, I am hoping for contact from N_E residents from all aspects: general info, helpful advice, places to stay, etc. But more personal mails, regarding specific Lit subjects are encouraged!

You won't find too much about me on Lit, so please feel free to PM me and I'll tell you what you want to know.

As this thread has the Boston_New England name, I am perfectly happy to be hijacked by horny Bostonians or New Englanders to post for their own interests.

Have a great visit!! At that time of year you will want to travel north to see the foliage - be a leaf peeper!!

Boston is great in September too - tons of things to see and do!!

Enjoy your visit!! New England is beautiful!!

Thanks Cate,

Leaf-peeping (that sounds naughtier than it is!) was my reason for going in Sept. I'll certainly be doing plenty of that. Thanks for replying.

Have Fun

Hope you have a good time. If you go to Boston the Museum of Fine Art and the Gardner Museum are probably the best places you'd want to visit. Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market are the basic tourist-trap shopping areas, but they might be fun if you've never been there. Same goes for Harvard Square. Probably the best part of the area is that there are thousands of excellent restaurants; you don't have to spend much money at all to get great Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Middle Eastern, etc. food. One big complaint about the city is that it closes down pretty early in terms of nightlife, public transportation, etc. Cape Cod is very nice, even when you can't swim, but the hotels tend to be overpriced. It might compare favorably with NH and VT though as they will be in foliage season. Personally I prefer NH. Its two main tourist areas are the Lakes region and, further north, the White Mountains. Be prepared to be flexible concerning meals; often its better to get a pizza or eat in a diner than spend 100$ in some place with a tablecloth so you can have the kid at the next table scream their lungs out. There's lots of roadside things and stores to see. Anyway hope this is some help, drop me a line if you'd like to talk more or you need an added attraction ;)

September is a beautiful time of year to come to New England! While the leaves won't really be turning in the Boston area until October, NH and VT will be in all their autumn glory. I really recommend the White Mountains in NH (North Conway area). Also, Cape Cod and the Islands are a great place to visit in the fall. There are fewer tourists, but the weather's still great and the ocean is still warm! Good luck planning, and I hope your visit here is wonderful ;)

Sounds like we all love New England!! If you do go to the White Mountains - take the Kankamangus Highway from Lincoln to North Conway - there are great places to pull over and take hikes and a covered bridge closer to the Conway side - pull in there - nice walking trails. I spent winters in the White Mountains - Loon Mnt. and there are so many great places - head up Rt 3 to see Franconia Notch - there is a nice place to eat there - The Notchway resturant. There is Sugar Hill over by Twin Mountains....gosh I could go on and on......

I agree, Harvard Square is a must!! Great place for people watching too..... excellent places for food, I enjoy a thia place - I think its called .....?something Dolphin??? Its downstairs, not far from the Crate & Barrel....

The JFK musuem is a good take I hear - of course I've never been there since its so close! Just travel through the small villages and towns - I'm sure you'll love it all!

Hey athick14u,

Thanks for the tips. You hit on a lot of things mentioned in my LP guide, so I know your advice is good advice. The White Mountains sound a definite from what you and others have said. I'm not too worried about the early-to-bed as I'm an early riser anyway, ooh-er missus! I'm also a Dennis Lehane fan, so a lot of the Boston landmarks may be familiar, if only as names on a page. And thank you for the offer of added attractions! I may well call your bluff on that, even if only to buy you a meal in a place with tablecloths and full of screaming kids! Loud Americans? Are you sure?? ;)

When I have a provisional itinerary, I'll probably write again, if that's okay. Thanks again,

Thanks Lynxie,

I'm hoping to avoid the tourist rush, yet see some of the foliage, early Septemeber sounds okay from your advice. I also plan on taking in a lot of the coast, as I love the sea. So Cape Cod it will be!

I've noted everyones details, so I'll probably write again nearer the time.

All the best

Thanks again Cate,

There are those White Mountains again! :) Loon Mt? I'll resist the temptation, Cate! :) But it sure sounds like a place where I would fit right in!

More good stuff -

In Boston - take in the Back Bay - its great for strolling and enjoying the city - the Prudential Center and the Coply are very pretty. Of course do the Quincy Market place - just cuz you ought to - great "street artists, muscians etc". There is Old Iron Sides, and I love the Musuem of Science too - excellent hands on place. There is an IMAX theater too -

If you go North, check out the North Shore - Ipswich, Glouster, Manchester By The Sea etc.... then to Portsmouth NH, maybe the Isle of Scholes.....up to Maine's seacoast - its all beautiful - there is Acadia National Park in Maine - Bar Harbor - just too much to mention!!

On the cape - anywhere is great! Chatham is especially pretty. There are miles and miles of the National Seashore, and if you like lighthouses - go for it - there are plenty!!

That time of year you can find lots of cranberry bogs being harvested - its a sight to behold. You can check things out in Plymouth MA - you know where where keep the rock - its in a cage! lol But there is lots of info there on when and what bogs will be harvested!

There is so much - I'll keep thinking ! How long is this trip - lol there is so much to see!!

Sounds like a deal. :p

People have talked about New Hampshire already so i won't repeat =P

If you're going to be in the south of new england (i.e. Connecticut) hit up the casinos. Foxwoods is the biggest in the world but Mohegan Sun, one town over, is the second biggest and i think it's much nicer =P Casinos have a lotta stuff to do like shopping, high end resteraunts, music, the Mohegan Sun owns a WNBA team, and of course, gambling. Lotta other touristy stuff in that corner of Connecticut espicially in Mystic, bout 15 min or so away

Cate, you and I both!

I've had at least half a dozen "friendly males" contact me! All very nice guys, don't get me wrong. But...

...as my alter-ego Melvin Udall says, in As Good As It Gets, and this is a direct quote from the script:

"I'll tell you, buddy, I'd be the
luckiest guy alive if that did it
for me."

I'm two seconds away from sacking this frickin' handle!

Mr, Mister, Monsieur, Senor Wolf-san!

I don't blame you!! It can be taken both ways! You could just add some info to your profile too.

BTW - that is one of THE best movies!

How long is this trip you're planning - and we're all telling you what to do! LOL;)

Mr Wolf

Damn sorry about that. I thought it was a vixen who hunts wolves. I think its time to change your name to "brutal macho wolf lord hunter" or something.

No probs, athick14u!

That door swings both ways! I thought you were a thick size 14 gal! Hence the invite to a meal and not a pint of frothy ale and a slap on the back in the nearest sports bar to discuss the latest football game! :D

I'll keep the name, but have added details to my profile, which will hopefully keep the poachers off my tail!

Cate,

I love that movie and watch it frequently. Do you like Wonder Boys?

I added some info to my profile. I also love your new AV!

I'll be travelling just two weeks, and I love the ocean. A small seacoast town near Boston sounds very inviting.

Hello Mr. Wolf!! Great idea to add that - and add info to your profile! I think that should clear things up for you.

I can't say anything about the Wonder Boys - I have no idea who or what they are ~ feel free to clue me in.

Only two weeks - wow! There is so much to see!! Have you made a list of priorities? So your travel is geographically easy ~ I think you are going to love it here ~ and dispite what you've heard, we are warm people. And yes, we drive like nuts ~ with the "Big Dig" going on the city is still a mess with detours etc ~ but what a project is has been to watch. You can check it out at thebigdig.com (I think that is the right site - or bigdig.com) it will also let you know of some of the goings on with the project while you are here. It can be valuable information.

I am excited about your trip!! I just love New England! And yes, my seacoast town is lovely.
