Boris Johnson tries to rally for unity in Scotland -- amid rising support for independence

Under pressure over surging support for Scottish independence and with a second referendum looking likely, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been touring Scotland praising the UK's rapid vaccine rollout in the hopes of turning the tide in favor of the pro-Union movement. But most Scots, including first minister Nicola Sturgeon, lambasted him for making the trip at all in a sign he may have already lost the union vote.

Will the UK dump their own Trumpist?

Well behind Boris' trip is a big bust up, not so much behind the scenes, in the SNP between the wee Fishwife and the fat man you wouldn't turn your back to, Salmon. Much of the Fishwife's steam is to cover the impending court cases that will tear the Scottish Indy party - SNP apart. Allegations of sexist bullying and coercion of unwilling victims via a WhatsApp group called Vietnam.

I'm sure others with their finger of the racing pulse of Scottish nationalism will be able to fill in the blanks.

But yes. Boris is a duplicitous upper class twat :)
btw he didn't trip over his dick because Michael Gove wasn't even invited

He's an embarrassment

But, on the plus side, he can construct coherent sentences using real words.

One benefit of the UK system of government is that he can be ousted by his own party ,so wait for the knives in the back .

His party have their noses in the trough too deep to be worried about what he's actually doing to the people

Exports from UK to EU down 68% since Brexit trade deal, say hauliers

Boris is sucking wind now!

LONDON (Reuters) - Exports from Britain to the European Union fell by 68% in January as trade was disrupted after the end of a transition period following Britain's departure from the European Union, according to a trade body representing hauliers.

The government did not confirm the data and said disruption at the border had been minimal since Britain completed its journey out of the EU's orbit at the of 2020 following an agreement on trading arrangements.

Since the start of the year, businesses and hauliers have had to adapt to new trading arrangements, including new systems for companies and officials in the British province of Northern Ireland.

Some businesses have struggled with new customs declarations and health certificates as the coronavirus pandemic also hits firms.

International members at the Road Haulage Association (RHA) reported a 68% fall in exports in January, the group said on Twitter.

"I find it deeply frustrating and annoying that ministers have chosen not to listen to the industry and experts," RHA Chief Executive Richard Burnett told The Observer newspaper

Oops!

I was reading a piece about a fish exporter. This company had gone from having to fill 2 forms per shipment to 72 forms. They had to take on several extra staff just to fill out these forms, and it's added days to the delivery times. It's costing them a fortune.

Regardless of how you feel about Brexit, this is just a shitshow at the moment. All these years to prepare, and still there's chaos.

Wish I'd saved the damn link now...

Here you go

"Chris Sheath and Katie Smith start filling out the new necessary forms for the lorry at 08:00. For each shipment, they must fill out and submit a catch certificate, which proves that the fish was caught legally.

That involves manually entering on a government website 149 different lines of data that was not previously required, such as the name of the vessel that caught the fish and the type of species being exported. The certificate for this shipment is 27 pages long."

It isn't rocket science. I feel bad for the small businesses. They were sacrificed.

The elephant in the room on Scottish Independence is that Scotland is massively subsidized by England. The SNP has no creditable explanation for how they will replace the subsidy.

The SNP has been making a pigs-ear of governance in the areas for which they are responsible and calls for 'Independence' is their way of diverting attention.

They have been helped by the massive collapse in the Labour vote in Scotland. Whenever the UK had a Labour government, that was only possible with Scottish votes. Now the Labour party in Scotland is almost non-existent.

But the Conservative party should not underestimate the Scottish disillusion with Westminster. The SNP may well win a majority in the next election to the Scottish parliament, and if it does, their calls for another vote will be difficult to reject.

Big business too and the ministers responsible eg Michael Fishface Gove are in denial. This is before the end of a further 6mths flexible approach agreed between the EU and the UK.

Numerous online stores that previously shipped worldwide, they have posted "We can't ship to the EU, please don't ask". Even shipping things to Northern Ireland requires more paperwork, which is for the moment still part of the UK.

The government never cared about business - the Conservatives don't understand business because none of them have been involved in it. Their parents made their money in the City where money flows like a river. This was always about xenophobia, imaginary nationalism and political expediency. It is the greatest triumph of Rupert Murdoch and will remain his legacy to the UK.

If the EU survives - and numerous other member countries are fed up with its centrist policies, according to the Murdoch press of course, then I predict we'll rejoin the EU on less favourable terms in ten years. Tails between our legs.

The French have been setting up UK branches for years to avoid French regulations...

Possibly. But would that have been by following the advice of the French equivalent of the Department for International Trade?

No. By following the advice of the French Chambers of Commerce and saying 'Fuck you!' to the French government.

"Lyne Biewinga, of the Netherlands British Chamber of Commerce, said she and her team had been working “night and day” on inquiries from UK companies in recent weeks ( Jan 2021 ).

Meanwhile, in an interview with this newspaper, Austria’s economic affairs minister, Margarete Schramböck, said inquiries from UK companies about moving to her country – which had been high for several years – had increased threefold since 1 January.

Hundreds of UK companies could switch operations to countries inside the EU in what is threatening to become a dramatic exodus of investment and jobs caused by Brexit.

A leading UK manufacturer of cheddar cheese, Simon Spurrell, has announced he will be switching £1m of investment to France.

While ministers have tried to dismiss business concerns about the new barriers to trade caused by the UK exit from the single market and customs union, the loss of jobs, investment and tax revenue is fast turning into a full-blown crisis."

But it seems to me that most of these are only small 'satellite-companies' (is that the right expression?) intended to avoid the rules and tax-issues. It's not like complete companies switch to other countries.

Satellite yea, but a million pound investment by one cheese maker x how many = a lot of jobs and investment abroad.

Add to that companies who are unlikely to move to the UK because it's outside the EU.

Shame the UK fisherman aren't getting what they voted for. I suppose I could get used to crab if it was cheap enough

Oh I know how they ended up with him.

So many insecure low on melanin Britons, like American MAGATs, are so threatened by immigrants "taking over their country"(but...but...it was called the empire on which the sun never sets) and minorities "not knowing their rightful place" that they'd vote in a sub-mediocre, loud, dumbass who can assauge their tender little feelings, to lead their country.

The stupidity of it all.

Pretty much - he became PM because of a power vacuum, then re-elected with a huge majority because the opposition party was in a shambles, but had been a main spokesman for Leave, in the Brexit referendum: a campaign full of dreadful lies. The main problem for the Remain campaign was British discontent ( the grass always being greener, foreigners making decisions for us, we won the war ). I was about the write in general we're pretty tolerant of race but - nah, that too.

On top of which, whether you agree with Brexit or not, having George Osborne, the architect of "austerity" in charge of the Remain campaign, created an open goal for a protest vote.

Politicians shouldn't be the one discussing trade deals - they do policy. Getting Boris and the Eurocrats to think in terms of trade is... what it has become. Fucking clusterfuck. I dare say once the business people and trade depts get stuck in then a lot of the problems will sort themselves out, provided they don't tell the politicians. George has recently got into hedge funds I think... amazing.
