Shad'rae's brain was still a little scrambled, so it took him longer than normal to recognize the direction Tala was heading. When he'd spoken of his people he'd never told her where they lived, so it was just dumb luck she was heading into their territory. He was behind her, hopefully no harm would befall her. If she'd entered with him, it would be awkward, but understandable and he could explain things. Wandering in alone, with his scent all over her? That could be trouble.
The sleek panther moved through the forest, following the tracks as much as the scent now. It became evident when she met some of his people, the scents mixed and their tracks were evident. Most humans didn't come this deep into the forest, any interaction with shifters was closer to the edge and generally on the shifters terms. Here at their home, humans were virtually unheard of. That he'd let Tala put herself in danger was eating at his stomach.
If there were any sentries they didn't make their presence known, letting Shad'rae pass. It didn't take long to find the village, most of the shifters were in a rough circle around the center of the village, where Tala was bound. A swell of anger pulsed in his heart, and the panther jumped over two rows of onlookers, landed in front of Tala, turned to face the group and roared a challenge to them.
Shad'rae had been gone for some time, many of the gathered didn't recognize the black panther as one of their own, or had forgotten his scent. He smelled like a shifter, but beyond that no one seemed to recognize him. Fortunately no one in the crowd accepted his challenge and he stalked back and forth, growling menacingly at anyone who approached Tala's bound form until someone who would know him came forward.
