Hey everybody! Now that I have your attention.....

I just got home from the hospital, and my surgery has been postponed until next Tuesday. I'm a bit of a bleeder and currently, there is a critical blood shortage in the US and Canada. Since there isn't enough blood to go around, I've donated blood for myself in case I need it next week. If I don't need it, it'll be donated to the general population when I'm done. I'm lucky in that my surgery is not critical. But there are people out there with critical surgical needs who are being postponed because of the shortage. If you are currently able, please consider donating blood for those in need. I know it's time consuming and kinda painful and makes you woozy, but it's only a few hours of your time every 8 weeks. I've found that it gets easier as you go along.

thanks for the reminder, shyguy...I'll be keeping an eye out for the next clinic in my area. It seems selfish to not donate, when I know so many people who aren't able to, for whatever reason.

I actually am called by the blood bank from time to time, since I have a rare blood type and I do donate. It is a good reminder, and a desperate need. Anyone who can, should donate. We can help one another. one day it may be us or a loved one depending on such a donation.

Take care everyone. :rose:

One of the better threads I've come across and for once I even have some viable info to add;

Most community donatins locations charge even those donating blood for their use in such cases as stated by snowy a few hundreds dollars so you can imagine how much it is just to get a unit of blood from someone else and while I don't know about your area, mine used to have a family plan where either family members of friends could dontate in your name and if done the cost was zero but that seems to have changed, they're still going to charge something but that's not good enough to not donate.

Also mentioned was that some can't donate for some reason. Cancer, hepC, aids, recent inkings and such, all valid reaons but in many cases it's a medication you take that is on the block list. I take a daily med that was on that list 17 years ago when I went to donate but that med is now off the list so all these years I could have been donating, my point is if it's a medication call them and ask if it's still on the blocked list, it might not be anymore.

With over half a million members I think and hope others would too, that the membership of lit could help their areas out greatly if just 1% were to donate and you never know if their is a component (spelling) in your blood that can be a lifesaver to another. Two years ago my then wife had to have blood that had a multitude of odd parts to it and as it turned out there were 2 units of it in texas. Flown in by jet itt helped her live a few days longer for them to try and save her but even though she died it could have been the trick to keep her alive but other shit was going on so it didn't.

And don't stop with blood, once your dead you don't need those organs either so give'em up to someone that does.

Charging to donate? That doesn't make any sense at all. If they need your blood they should take it free. Charging for it is indirectly eliminating a great deal of people who would otherwise contribute to the area/nation's blood supply. What was it that I heard? Oh yes, that, at least in my area it takes more than five hundred (possibly more than a thousand, I don't remember exactly except that it was a very large number) people donating each day just to maintain the current blood supply at what they call a three-day level.

Hmm...Could the people working at the center be paid? Where I donate the staff is all volunteers. That could be it.

Oops...That was for your own usage wasn't it? My mistake.

Another interesting thing that I heard they were considering to take off the list of disqualifying factors, but haven't yet, is men who've had sex with other men and women who've had sex with men who've had sex with other men and their definition of sex is pretty loose. High HIV/AIDS risk? I don't know, but they are eliminating a chunk of the possible blood-donating public with this.

One reminder to all y'all who do or are considering donating: Remember to drink lots of fluids and eat about 2-3 hours before going in. I made the mistake once of not drinking any fluids that day (I don't know what I was thinking) and I nearly passed out. It was so serious that it took about forty minutes longer than normal and I had to be released into the custody of the person I came with. Not something to trifle with, for sure.

No they don't charge to donate at all, only if you receive blood be it for anyone or if to be used by yourself in a surgery that's coming up.

Donating blood means a lot to me and I've done it quite a bit. However, the local organization in the US won't let me donate. Why? Because I'm European. I might have mad cow disease.

It really pisses me off that they reject a perfectly good donor (the German Red Cross has checked my blood, since I've donated for them quite a bit) for such a stupid reason.

its one of the only things that dosnt cost any money but means the world to somebody...........BE A BLOOD DONOR please pleasei lost so much blood once i nearly died and i have so many people to be thankful to.............so thank you

I donate blood. I'm O+, and my boy is O-, so we make a point to donate every time we are eligible. We've been 3 times, so far...

The last time I went they wouldn't let me donate because my iron was too low. Apparently I need to eat more red meat or cream of wheat lol. They just changed the waiting period for donating after getting a tattoo - it used to be a year, which is why I just started donating... now it's 6 months. :)

I missed my last day, 'cause they didn't call... and my boyfriend failed to remind me. Which remninds me... I ought to call and make another appointment for soon.

My girlfriend had the same exact problem. 3 times in a row. She was so pissed. I donate just about everytime I can. I here not only can you help save people's lives, but it's actually good for you. Something about forcing the body to produce new cells and plasma, and not having the old just disolved into your body.
