Oddly enough this was the subject of conversation at breakfast this AM. Over the past two weeks the local DEA office has taken 14 lbs of heroin off the street. 13 lbs coming across the border and yesterday 1 lb off the Amtrak coming from LA on it's way to Pittsburgh. Not ONE of the trafficker's was a citizen, not a single one.

Also, opiates in general are severely over-prescribed in the US for "pain management" given how insanely lucrative they are for the doctors prescribing them. It's a small leap from becoming dependent on something like Oxycontin to graduating to heroin when/if you ever get off the pills.

And it ties directly into the war on drugs. Medical marijuana is actually effective at managing pain and has less side effects than opiates. But let's say you have a really bad health problem resulting in severe pain that makes opiates necessary---but you want to dial back to stave off the possibility that you'll get addicted or wreck your liver or dope yourself into early onset dementia or some combo of the three. In that case, you're just fucked.

Why? Even in states that have legalized medical and recreational marijuana, your doctors will drug test you. If you have ANY drugs that are illegal at the federal level in your system, you get booted off the drugs. So, trying to taper off the prescription drugs gets you kicked off them completely and you end up unable to manage your pain effectively.

It's of a piece with the whole "we live in a rich country that has commodified human pain and suffering" thing.
