These ancestors from 3.3 million years ago in what we now call Africa were probably pretty dark skinned, or at least probably covered in dark hair, like chimpanzees, wouldn't you think?

As to the original post I don't think it matters a bit whether fair skin and blue eyes evolved in order to deal with the less sunshine and vitamin D, and better low light vision due to daylight hours available in northern climes or whether extra melanin in the skin and darker eyes evolved as a protection against more sun exposure in equatorial regions.
