There is a child custody battle being waged before the Canadian Supreme Court involving a white Canadian mother and a black American father.
Theodore Edwards is an Afro-American male who played basketball for the Vancouver Grizzlies. Kimberly Van de Perre is a white Canadian female with whom he had an eighteen month extra-marital affair. The result of which was a baby boy, Elijah. The mother chose to have the child, identified the father, thus obliging him to child-support, but ran into an unexpected roadblock. Theodore Edwards wife, Valerie, forgave her husband's infidelity and agreed to pursue custody of his bastard son. Edwards also has twin daughters with his wife Valerie.
The Supreme Court has to decide who should have custody of the boy, Elijah. Should he remain in Canada with his single mother or should he be awarded to his father in the U.S.? Just to muddy the issue, race was introduced. Would it be better for the racially-mixed child to be raised with a white mother in Canada, or with his black father in the United States? His white mother is a single parent, whereas, his father can provide a stable home with two parents and siblings.
Would a child of racially mixed parents be better with his black American father in the U.S.A., or with his white mother in Canada? Does it matter? His father claims the boy must be allowed to identify with his roots by being a part of the culture that is his heritage. His mother counters that he has two heritages of equal importance. A black child reared in Canada will experience a totally different environment than would the same child in America. Should this be a consideration? Should race matter at all or should the case be decided solely on which home environment would be most to his benefit? It is a case with faint shades of Elian Gonzales.

Bingo,

the money.
Does he wish not to raise the child, but avoid the support?
Doeas the wife wish to cut the girlfriend out of her husband's life with one tactical win?
Child custody, I would submit, is never about race, just the players in the drama...
