Life sucks!
Abby was sitting in a less than popular corner of the university's quad. She was alone. She was always alone. If anyone was to ask -- which none ever had -- she would have said she liked it this way. She didn't. Even though she didn't socialize, she was actually a social person. At home, during the university's summer and holiday breaks, she was very social with her family. But here at school, the word leper jumped into her mind once, twice, a hundred times a day.
Abby had never been a popular girl, not as a child, as a teen, or now as a 20 year old university sophomore. There wasn't anything in particular wrong with her. There just wasn't anything in particular right with her.
She'd been rather plain looking as a child and a bit heavy for her age, resulting in the nickname Flabby Abby. At 12, she had a sudden growth spurt that made her weight more appropriate. As luck would have it, that was when the zits made their appearance. She would be well into her teens before the first signs of womanly curves came to her. She thought she might finally catch a break, only to have a sudden explosion of hair growth from groin to ankles make her look like Sasquatch's love child. It had become so much work keeping the fur under control that she'd simply given up the fight, as well as skirts, shorts, and swim suits.
And those were just the physical issues. Her personality had presented just as many complications. She was now and always had been a serious introvert, making it virtually impossible to make, let alone keep friends. She was highly intelligent but suffered from a short attention span that prevented her from using those smarts in any significant way. And then there was the inferiority complex. When she was able to accomplish something that was deserving of attention and accolades, she simply couldn't believe that anything good said about her was real and true.
She was, essentially, seriously fucked up!
Why can't I be like them?
She was watching the other students enjoying the beautiful afternoon break between classes, young men and women in their late teens and early twenties. They were so different than her. They socialized, the partied, they fucked. She never would. She knew that. She accepted it. She didn't like it, but... she accepted it. It was simply the way it was... and because there was no one in this world interested enough to tell or show her differently, Abby was resigned to live this way.
