One of the guys I work with over the summer recently got married.

Everyonce in a while he will ask my sex questions because untill he got married in late june he was a virgin and so was his wife.

I was talking to him a few days ago and mentinoned that I hoped he would wait a while to have kids since he and his wife are not setled yet. I know they are both under pressure from their families and church to start having kids.

They both want to wait a few years until they are in their mid 20's or so. He just turned 21 and she just turned 20.

I made a comment that his wife should get on the pill if she can without any complications.

He replied with that they could not do that because their church gave them a phamphlet explaining how the BCP pill really just causes abortions.

I always understood that most versions of the pill prevent pregancancy by tricking the body into thinking it is pregnant so it does not ovulate. I think it does some other things too but I could not remember them all and just told them what I could remember.

So can someone back me up here on this and explain what I am missing.

What church does he belong to!?! Geesh.

Very strict southern baptist. He also goes to the baptist bible college and is studying to be a minister/missionary. He has matured a lot in the 2 years since I have met him. He no longer accepts everything his church or school tells without question. A year or so ok he would not even have listined to me when i contradicted what his church said.

The hormones in birth control pills prevent eggs from being released from the ovaries (ovulation). They also make the mucus at the opening to the uterus (cervix) thick and sticky, so sperm cannot enter the uterus or fallopian tubes. Birth control pills may change the lining of the uterus so that a fertilized egg cannot implant.

WebMD.com- send him there.

That's strange. I have family that is Southern Baptist and I've never heard of such things.

Seriously, education can only help.

Birth control pills fool the body into acting as if it's pregnant. Birth control pills, also called oral contraceptives (OCs), come in two forms: the combined OC, a combination of two synthetic hormones, estrogen and progestin; and, the minipill, which consists solely of progestin. Combined OCs are more commonly used, though both kinds are available through health care providers. The combination pill prevents ovulation by suppressing the natural hormones in the body that would stimulate the ovary to release an egg. By taking this estrogen throughout the month, you insure that no egg will be developed or released for that cycle. Progestin thickens the cervical mucus, hindering the movement of sperm. Progestin also prevents the uterus's lining from developing normally; *so, if an egg were fertilized, implantation is unlikely.*

The minipills, which contain no estrogen, inhibit the egg's ability to travel through the fallopian tubes, alter the cervical mucus to block sperm, partially suppress the sperm's ability to unite with an egg, and partially inhibit implantation in the uterine wall.

So yes.. sometimes it does act as a form of an abortion..

RU 486 can be said to cause abortions, I suppose, but not your normally prescribed pills. Still, if he feels the ethics presented by this extreme point of view are valid you shouldn't monkey with that, you're into religion there.

Maybe if the person is already preggo, and high doses, I dunno.

that's basically what the morning after pill is, high doses of the birth control pill to hopefully kill off any chance of a pregnancy. A regular birth control pill basically sets hormones through the body (ones your body naturally produces and even more so when pregnant) and then in a sense tricks the body (as someone else said) to make it harder for pregnancy to occur.

the other thing, is when she comes off the pill because they decide to have kids, it is actually a little easier for them to conceive. She should still be ovulating at the same time as she was while taking it so they should know when to have sex and all that fun stuff

I'm Southern Baptist. My grandfather has been a deacon, one uncle is a licensed minister and my other uncle was an ordained minister.

I've never heard any mention of anything like this. My mother suggested birth control pills to me. My sister lives with my mother and grandparents and is on birth control pills NOW.

I'd be interested in knowing the copyright holder for the pamphlet.

Ok thats pretty much what I told him just in more detail. I will send him to WebMD the next time I see him.

I don't know I did not see it. I am just going off the information that he told me.

Something else I would have to ask him.

OMG!!! I've never heard of such a brochure. Yes, you are correct the pill does trick the body into thinking it's pregnant.

Okay, i just went to the SBC web site, there's a couple of links there dealing with suggesting that the "minipills" could be causing an abortion if fertilization occurs. There is NO resolution about birth control pills. The resolutions are what are the "this is what we as a church believe and expect our members to follow".

(I'm still ignoring the one about internet pornography and alcohol.)

Azwed, as a Southern Baptist, this would be my question for your friend. "If your wife is taking birth control pills and it's God's will that she become pregnant, do you really believe that the birth control pills will have any effect?"

Here's another thing.. I know some Christians that think it is a sin to prevent the body from being able to produce children.. they feel that if they get pregnant, it is God's will.. and meant to be.

They have 7 children between them.

Maybe your friends church thinks along the same lines?

I know some members of his church that also go to his school feel that way lickerish. One of the guys I worked with got married right after he turned 20 and he is almost 24 now. His wife is either pregnant with their third child now or has already had it I am not sure. Another guy that I work with is engaged and will me married in the late spring/early summer. They are planning to have their first child right away so that the baby will be born not long after they graduate school.

Because my shop is so close to the school we always have a few students from their working at the shop.

Of all the people I have worked with from that school only one has not been married or engaged by the time they were 21. That guy is off in South America some where doing relief work.

I would love to hear the answer to your question morninggirl but I probably won't see him for a couple of weeks because I am at school right now. I have to go back for a weekend here soon and I will try to talk to him then.

I know some people like this too. I'm more of the opinion that it's morally wrong (not necessarily a sin) to bring a child into the world if you can't possibly support it.
