Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris is more optimistic than ever that he'll soon buy an island where Syrian refugees can live. In September he announced his plan to buy an uninhabited island from either Greece or Italy, and within weeks had already found two possible islands for his project. A little whacky and far fetched. The islands are uninhabited for a reason. He would be better off just donating to the Red Crescent or something.

Some islands are just uninhabited because there is no particularly good reason to live there, not that people couldn't live there if they tried. Every so often one gets bought up for a resort or the like.

The issues I see here are that in real life building takes time. It's not like he's going to plop down a fully functioning island in the next 12 months and those people need places to go now or at least safe places to stay in the interim. And island life is pretty expensive. I highly doubt there is an uninhabited island with enjoying room for 200k people to be even remotely self sustaining. Which means this would ultimately be MORE expensive than pulling up an electoral map of the United States, finding a state with 5 or less votes and congratulating them on their new city and the associated tax dollars of building new infrastructure and jobs. Hell just tell them it's jobs building. . .things that people might live in. Spend the 18-24 months training the Syrians to say "You betcha pardner. How about those Green Socks. They sure'r great at the the water hockey." It'll go over smooth as fuck.

Okay it won't but I think installing Big Brother cameras and turning an entire state into a reality tv show would be fan fucking tastic.

He could probably buy Detroit for a good price. They're in shit shape. Add to the tax base. Get some gov money to help relocate. Could revitalize the whole city in one swoop. Maybe some ME cooking smells will override the stench of Detroit you can smell when the wind blows from the south. I mean it. In Windsor you can tell which way the wind is blowing by the smell coming from across the river.
