I apologize if this thread is redundant, But search of similar posts didn't give me the info I wanted.... Exactly what all do they wax at a salon bikini waxing? Just up top or lower on the lips? How long do you stay smooth? And info on cost is appreciated. Thanks!

How much they do depends on the place, and what you ask for. When I go, I ask them to wax everything. And they do. There is absolutely no hair left under my panties when they are done. I pay $30, I think - soemthing like that (I'm usually getting other waxing done too, so I forget the price of just the bikini wax). That is at a fairly inexpensive salon in a very expensive city (NY).

I usually stay perfectly smooth for 2 weeks, and then reasonably smooth for another week or so. This varies considerably by person. Also, if you continue waxing over a long period of time, regrowth slows.

Btw... make sure you tip your waxer well.

don't quote me, but..

I heard that you should tip at least 30% for a brazillian. The more intimate the waxing, the more the tip.

How painful is a bikini wax ?

I have always wanted to get one but for some reason the notion of pain , just stopped me from getting one , plus also how much does the wax lady see of your private area , huh huh ??

IMHO,

I'm not brave enough for a Brazilian.... yet :)

My salon charges $25.00 for waxing and I get a "landing strip" of about 1 inch left. The asethetician (waxer) uses this green wax stuff that doesn't seem to hurt very much.

At least with my waxer, she lets me leave on my thong and just has me pull it over when needed. Gives me that illusion of privacy i guess .... and I stay smooth for about 2 weeks, then it's another 3 or so before I need another wax... don't notice new hair 'cause it grows in smoothly, not stubbly like shaving.

Honestly, it's the anticipation of the pain that makes it hurt. Yes, that is VERY sensitive skin down there, but I've found just a good scrub with a bath poufy thing or wash cloth kind of roughens the skin a tad so things aren't so "ouchy" when the waxing is done.

You get to keep your thong on you say .....
I was thinking more along the lines of keeping on my non thong undies so I would not feel so exposed.

If I were to go get a bikini wax, I would not ask for a Brazilian wax, that just sounds like to much pain, I think I would ask for some thing less painful. I am a weeine when it comes to pain, and the notion of hot wax down there makes me cringe.

But, I think I will be giving it a try , next time I go to my salon instead of just asking for my eye brows to be shaped, I am going to casually ask about the bikini waxing and maybe I will be brave enough to go for it...

Thanks bug.. for shedding some light on the whole "ouchy" thing. :) :rose:

It costs S$25 to have a bikini wax where I go--that's about US$15. My experience is the same as those who posted above--it takes about 2 weeks before the hair starts coming in again, and another week before I'm ready to be waxed, since the hair has to be at least half an inch long so that the wax has something to grip on to.

About the pain involved. For me, yes, it hurts a bit. However, a simple way to minimize pain when you know it's coming is to take a slow deep breath and then exhale just as the beautician pulls the wax strip. The exhalation must provide some kind of numbing mechanism because it works for all sorts of pain. (Try slow deep breathing when you have a headache!)

Regarding modesty: At the salon I go to, they give you a paper panty (some places call it a disposable). Once you have it on, they trim it up to the point you want waxed. It acts as a sort of template while affording you some cover.

I'd love to try a Brazilian wax but need to build up the courage first!

I have had both regular bikini waxes and brazilian bikini waxes. In all honesty, the bulk of the 'pain' is in the area of the traditional bikinin wax, so bumping up to the brazilian was not that different. (and yes, as another poster said, exhaling as they pull the strip helps a lot).

Now, i have been to some places that let me keep on my own thong, another place that provides the disposable panty, and another that prefers you wear nothing (whew, i was a bit shy at that one, but did ok).

The biggest adjustment for me from a traditional bikini wax to the brazilian is the positions required. To get into all of the most sensitive places, you will sometimes be asked to get on your hands and knees, or pull you knees up to your chest, etc.

I have also been told to avoid getting the area waxed during or just after your period. Oh, and one last thing .. it helps to periodiclaly loofah the area to avoid in-grown hairs.

I concur with almost everything you have said A'SB except one thing: you say avoid waxing during or just after your period. Frankly, I find just after the absolute best time to wax. If I am not mistaken, the worst time to wax is actually the week before you have your period, because your hormone levels are, like, surging (PMS, anyone?) and you are about a billion more times susceptible to things like temperature changes, light levels, and, umm, pain.

Personally, strgzr, I do not find waxing that horribly painful, in general. If you have ever had a tattoo, maybe you can understand what I mean when I say that yes there is a certain level of pain at first, but then you kind of say to yourself, "right, okay, it hurts this much and it's going to keep hurting this much until it's done, but then it's done, and I can live with that, and it's OK".

The contortions you go through for a Braziolian are very humourous, but a good tech will be a pro and be used to it and have a sense of humour about it and put you at ease. I would recommend starting with a basic bikin wax though before diving headlong into the Braziian, though, so you know a bit more what you're getting into.

p.s. exfoliation and witch hazel are your friends, just remember that.

WOW

This is great info!! I have never waxed before but I think I have the heart to now-before i get another boyfriend who loves hairy bushes. i am not overly hairy but non ever want me to shave and they can always tell when i have.

this is not about them though, so I will give it a whirl! I can dela with the pain as long as i am prepared for it :D

Hi blaquelady, Welcome to Lit :)

I like what you said--that waxing is not about them but for you! Men can have all the preferences they want, but in the end, we should do what we want with our bodies.

Also, thanks A'SB for the information about Brazilian waxing.

Has anyone had a bad experience that they can share so we can look for things to avoid when scouting for beauty technicians who do waxing?

Hi MercyMia!
(and remember everyone, i am by no means claiming to be an expert here, just sharing my experiences) .....

It is important to find a technician who is experienced with Brazilian Waxes. If you have friends who have it done, talk to them and find out where they go and who does their waxing. For my first Brazilian wax, i called the day spa that i had been to before for other services and told them that i wanted to make an appointment for a Brazilian wax and wanted someone very experienced. They gave me two names and told me a bit about each person ... both had been doing Brazian waxes for a long time and i had actually gotten the name of one from another friend. So i made the appointment and it was great.

She told me she would start with a traditional bikini wax and then if i wanted to continue we could. That made me feel better (rather than being waxed on one side and then unable to continue to the other! LOL). It hurt a bit but was nothing unbearable and i was thrilled with the way it looked and felt afterwards (though it was quite red for about the next 12 hours).

I did have a friend who tried her first Brazilian wax at a spa she had never been to before with a technician she knew nothing about and ended up miserable. Several times the tech didn't hold the skin taut when she pulled and that can cause a great deal of discomfort/pain and doesn't remove as many hairs. Also, a few times, as she pulled the fabric her hand slipped and my friend said that hurt even worse!

HTH!

(and peachykeen ... i was just reading an article and you are right!! says that the best time to go is the week after your period because your pain threshold is at the highest :) )

traditional bikini wax

and how is a traditional different from a brazilian wax ? I know that with a brazilian bikini wax they leave you completely bare, so a traditional wax would ... ??

Do I make any sense ? I have never gotten any kind of bikini wax so excuse my silly questions. :)

Oh' and another question , has anyone done it themselves, like buying the wax and so forth.. instead of going to a salon ..

Here is a great article with some info on Brazilian waxes. Discusses the differences in types of bikini waxes, what to expect, choosing an experienced technician, etc.

And Aphrodisiac ... in my experience, a traditional bikini wax removes the hair from the "bikini line" only (picture wearing a bikini bottom ... hair peaking outside of that is waxed). The Brazilian can be as extreme as removing all hair from the area (though many women leave a small strip of hair, often called a "landing strip", though there are many variations there).
