i just got my first bike helmet
im curious do you wear a helmet??

well i ve got two stories that will make you reconsider wearing one if you dont

first story happened to me

i was riding my bike and took a big fall farward over my handle bars and landed on my head, at first i thought i was ok untill i noticed all the blood running down my face, and i do mean a LOT of blood , in a matter of minutes all my clothes were literally soked with blood, any way i get to the emergency room and it takes the doctor about 7 hours to sow up my head , turns out i preatty much scalped myself , i ended up with 40 stickes and like another 40 staples.....or sumthing like that cant really remember. any way i got a whole bunch of big scars on my head now
thats my story

story number two

this happend to a friend of mine, he never wore a helmet and one day he decided that he wants one , who knows why , but anyway a day after he buys it he wipes out and lands on some wood , his head hitting two 4 inch rusty nails that go right thought his helmet and scratch his head up a big , but nothing serious, any way if he wasnt wearing the helmet ........well u can figure it out for yourself

so there are two reason to look like you have a mushroom for a head while riding your bike

Yes. I used to work in a bike shop. A number of guys from the shop met the band members in UB-40 and we all went for a mountain bike ride. One of the band members was too cool to strap his helmet, and when he spilled he cracked his noggin good.

He was OK eventually, but missed the concert that night.

helmets

I have a sticker on my helmet that says it all, "Helmets, Let those who ride, decide".

After going over the handle bars and almost finding a rock in the creek the hard way, I have worn a helmet when I ride. That was 21 years ago before people didn't even think about bike helmets must less wear one.

My next-door neighbor's 4 year old kid wears one, and he doesn't even own a bike - and it is QUITE banged up. He's a nice little boy, just not really very coordinated.

I don't wear a helmet, I suppose I should really. But I don't ride off-road or do any crazy shit, a helmet isn't gonna save me if I get hit by a lorry.

It's funny but before my arthritis put paid to my cycling days I never wore a cycle helmet.....but at exactly the same time I rode a motorcycle and I'd never dream of riding without a helmet on.

Small side note here but motorcycle helmets have been mandatory since 1971 in the UK and because you have to wear them by law they are exempt from UK sales tax (known as VAT).

I used to ride bicycles extensively, sometimes even racing them - but that was before helmets were available. Oh we had leather head things for some racers, but mostly they just wore these funny hats. Then I went into cars and bikes. Later I got back into bicycles getting a mountain bike, and getting one for my daughter so we could ride together. I got a helmet for both of us. I had been in enough bike/car/motorcycle wreaks to know their value.

Once my daughter and I were going for a ride in the country and she didn't want to wear her helmet because it would mess up her hair and she thought it would look "dorky" (she was a teenager). I told her no helmet, no ride, so she wore it. She fell down during the ride and scraped up her hands and knees, and when we got home she took her helmet and gave it to me to put away. I looked at it and then called her attention to it; it had two good sized gouges in it and I told her that would have been her head had she not been wearing it. I think she got the idea, although she still hates wearing them.

I own a bike helmet, because It's required for the infrequent times I ride my bike on Nellis AFB. It's very dusty, because I haven't ridden my bike on base for about four years.

I don't wear a helmet for riding around town primarily because I have enough trouble finding a place to lock the bike in this town. Storing the helmet where it won't be stolen is more hassle than I'm willing to put up with. As outsider pointed out, getting run over is going to do a lot more than dent my head.

If I rode my bike in the way an in the terrain it's designed for, (mountain trails) I'd wear a helmet, but as my tertiary means of transportation a helemt is more hassle than help.

Oh my lord that was funny. :D

I'm with the "Let those who ride, decide" group. Let's just call it a little natural selection.

In Australia you have no choice if you ride a bike you MUST wear a helmet !!!

Same as New Zealand, and its a $55 fine if you get caught not wearing one. Still amazes me how many kids (read that as teenagers) dont wear them, or wear them on their elbows...i guess they are to "cool" to crash.

Motorcycle helmets are also compulsory here....after scraping several buddies off the road from time to time, you see each and every one of them with scrapes on their helmets. Its a sobering sight, knowing that could have been their skull/scalp.

After my last tumble, my full-face helmet had a scrape right down the centre of the visor and chin guard, right where my nose and chin would have been.

Let those who ride decide...??

PHOOEY on that, make em compulsory. FACT Helmets SAVE lives, just like seat belts. If your "too cool" to wear one, i'll come visit you in the cranial injuries ward, and harrange your stupid ass until you decide to wear one...If you still wont listen, hell, I'll be your pall-bearer, coz it aint long before you get splattered.

OK, its a persona;l thing with me...I hate watching idiots on M/cycles AND bicycles without the approprate safety gear.

I wont ride without Leather jacket, boots, gloves, Two pair of jeans or leather bike pants and a helmet. Even still, a tumble will bamg you up, just not as badly.
Oh yeah, I been riding/racing for 30 odd years, everything from Moto--X to circuit racing on F1 bikes, I speak from experience.

Rant over, resume whatever you were doing! :D

I always wear one....i get teased by my male friends but i don't really care. I don't have the money to pay the fine if i got caught without one on!

I wish my brother had worn his. The fucker had one too. It was sitting right there on his table when we went into his dorm room to pack his shit up.

If he had been wearing it we would have been laughing about the stupid accident instead of packing...

17 years ago... The pain of seeing that helmet will not go away.

Two reasons you'll never see me in an open face lid are the one above and the fact that they make me look like a complete twit.

:D

I never wear a helmet on my bicycle, but always on my motorcycle....I live on a rural country road so the pedalbike never sees much action anyway. I cringe everytime I see someone on a motorcycle with the highly protective 'do-rag and shirtless leather vest, though. That's Darwinism at it's best. I, however, like my skin and bones right where they are, thanks....even if I have to deal with the dread helmet hair.
