If you like dogs, what is your favourite size?

Me, I love big dogs. I like a dog whose head is so big it takes both hands to scratch it. When I'm finally able to own a dog, however, I will choose a medium size dog because they are easier to travel with, (and sneak into hotel rooms ;)).

We have a 30 lb terrier of unknown origin. He looks a bit like Toto. He is a perfect size.

I love big dogs, but with big dogs comes big poop.
I'm not a fan of cleaning that up.

I love other people's dogs. I'm living with one right now, a gorgeous terrier/basenji mix of about 30 lbs. He's just a delight, and has melded himself right into my clan of cats.

yeah... you can travel with a dog. Cats, not so much.

Since we can't own a dog yet, we frequently volunteer to dog sit for friends when they travel. Win-win!

I traveled everywhere with my cats - boat, plane, from Vancouver to Florida in a Uhaul. If you train your cats to travel, they are actually easier to travel with than dogs. And much easier to sneak into hotel rooms. ;)

I'm allergic to dogs and cats so have never had either but my parents had a 150 lb. Malamute/ husky mix that I was fond of. I think it's the personality of some small breeds that I dislike more than the actual size.

So my vote is for big if you've got enough room for them otherwise medium.

I love other people's dogs too. I just can't have a pet that needs too much looking after.

I have friends who run a rescue. They specialize in Great Pyrs but have a few others as well. I love the pyrs. Great big dogs that can squish me. They're so loveable and cuddly.

The other of their pack I'm in love with is a little yappy pom (I think) He's such a little attention whore. We relate well  And he loves playing dress up.

I love big dogs (please don't read this as I love big poop). I've never understood the attraction to miniature ones like Chihuahuas or such. Dogs to me, are for roughhousing and playing around with. I would prefer not to be worried about crushing my dog. But maybe I'm just a big behemoth.

I'm about two months away from getting a Rottweiler and am so excited.
Big doggies are where it's at :)

Big dogs. My last dog was a Bull Mastiff X god only knows what. He was a very protective mummies boy.

I don't understand this fascination with small yappy dog breeds or these new mongrel oops i mean expensive designer breed dogs.

big for me, though my mutt, a 3/4 greyhound, 1/4 collie is tall but skinny.

medium-large. Our german shepherd is on the smaller side for a german shepherd, at about 80lbs.

I'll add a pic once my laptop stops acting like a knobhead

No bandanas, but we do have a lobster suit we occasionally put on him to amuse the cat.

To amuse...the cat? Yesssss, I believe you. *nods*

I love that one too! Great movie.

I think it's the personality of some small breeds that I dislike more than the actual size.

Many small dogs are high strung. They are the superballs of the canine world. It's funny that many people will choose a small breed of dog because they don't want to do a lot of walking or have a small space with not much room for a dog to run when it is the small ones who often need the most exercise and stimulation, while the largest breeds (Newfoundlanders, as an example) are quite sedentary.

Wait, don't tell me...you did that to amuse the cat?

I love big dogs (please don't read this as I love big poop). I didn't until you mentioned it. Now it's all I can think about.I've never understood the attraction to miniature ones like Chihuahuas or such. Dogs to me, are for roughhousing and playing around with. I would prefer not to be worried about crushing my dog. But maybe I'm just a big behemoth.

Now I'm curious about the rate of "dog crushings" every year. Hm.

Mastiffs are the definitely the Momma's boys of the dog world. When I worked as a vet assistant, one of my favourite patients was a massive Mastiff named "Tina". Every now and then, however, I had to bathe Tina, which had to be done in a run due to her size and meant that I would also get a shower in the process. Her owner usually brought donuts by way of apology.

Rescue dogs, IMO, will always be the best.

big for me, though my mutt, a 3/4 greyhound, 1/4 collie is tall but skinny.

Trying to picture what that might look like...

OK, fine. You can call your rock Snoopy. ;)

It doesn't really matter what I call it, it won't come.

(Ba dum dum)

Perhaps they tricked you and sold you one of those designer breeds kiwi submissive was talking about?

A Germahuahua?

The only bad dogs are dogs ruined by the neglect or abuse of humans. As species go, there really is no finer.

Personally, though, I need a dog who can keep up with me when I run. Border collies and retrievers are great. Smart, energetic, affectionate, and exceedingly loyal.

With the exception of cats. ;)

(Cats that don't shit in JM's garden, that is).

Agreed. Unfortunately because of their fantasticness, some species of retrievers have been grossly over-bred, causing both health and behavioural problems to become more prevalent. Border Collies are ridiculously smart but need owners up to the task of keeping them challenged and well exercised. That said, the most intelligent dog I ever met was a Border Collie.

My future dog will have to keep up with me when I run and swim. :)

He's half doberman. His mum was badly mistreated and kept in a 4 ft x 4ft pen from birth. When she was rescued by the people we got him from, they nursed her back to health, but she never grew much, so was very small for a doberman. Malachis dad was a big GSD and they had 10 puppies, all of them on the small side. He's about the size of a decent size collie.

I love the look of big dogs but I don't think I oculd take care of one, so medium dogs are just fine. I know lots of people hate small dogs, but I think they look so sweet.

Warning: Another one of my long winded posts coming up.
I'm one of those guys who can't say no to any animal. I love them all. But, for the last 25 years, I've had nothing but cats. Before that, I usually had dogs, with a few cats in my early years. I'm not that picky on breed. Personality rules.

Large dogs are great, despite of any large poop issues. I once had a friend who had a Doberman and a Rottweiler. Both were bred to be LARGE. Parents of both were champions. The Doberman was a small horse and the Rottweiler had a 28 inch neck. But, if they knew you, they were just little puppies. Of course, when the Rottweiler leaned against you, he could break your knee.

Both lived active lives but both had to be put to sleep at the age of nine. Hip dysplasia was the reason. of course you can have that in any animal, and any size but it happens a lot with larger animals. If you have the money for surgery, or for the long term medication, etc. I'd love to have a large dog. I don't like to see any animal in pain.

Two of my sisters have small dogs. Well, one dog is almost a medium size. They each have 3 dogs. All of them are pugs or similar size and when they bark, it sounds like a kennel in their houses. I don't visit them except for holidays, so the dogs don't remember me. I have to let someone know, before I move, so the dogs won't bark when I get up. I'm a prisoner. I have to ask before I go to the damn bathroom.

Each of these dogs are pure breeds and were very expensive purchases. I'm afraid to ask how much each one was, because we were brought up to go to the pound, if we wanted a dog. Now my two older sisters both have over $1,000 worth of dog, EACH. Sure, they are nice dogs and seem to be smart dogs, too.

As far as what dog to get...rescue dogs are the best. Not only do they appreciate you, after being in that cage for however long, you save them from being in that cage until they are put to sleep. And of all the dogs and cats I've had, the more breeds you have in an animal, the longer they will live without a disease taking them. Sure, pure breeds can also live a long time, but they are also more susceptible to disease.

I can see why someone would want a pure breed. But why spend so much on a pure breed when you could save a rescue dog for so much less? There's always going to be someone come along to take a pure breed, if you don't. The rescue dog needs a home.

If I go to a shelter, I want to take every animal home with me. I just can't stand leaving any of them there. It's a sad experience, so I don't go. If I ever come into a lot of money, that's one of the things I'd want to do...take care of the kids and animals that nobody wants.

The best kind of dog is my dog. :D

We currently have a rescued Pembroke Welsh Corgi and we're looking to adopt a Golden Retriever when the right one comes along. So no giant dogs but no tiny ones either.
