I made a deal with my stepfather. He lined up a job for me, with the understanding that if I worked for a year and banked most of the money, he would foot the bill for me to go to college.

I did not hold up my end of the bargain. By the time the year was over, I was addicted to drugs, had lost the job and my life was in a downward spiral.

I spent years digging myself into a hole, and more years climbing out of it.

Now, finally, I am ready. I am ten years late, but I am ready.

It's community college for now, but classes start tomorrow.

Congrats !! I know personally what drugs can do to a person. I also know how difficult it is to break their hold. You should be very proud of your accomplishments. Hold your head up high, you deserve it, :rose:

Congratulations!! That is wonderful!

It may be ten years later, but I firmly believe you will get so much more out if it now than you would have then.

You have reason to be proud of yourself.

Well done Melissa. Everyone has a past. /some people have nothing but happy memories, others have had to go through some pretty tough life lessons. It sounds like you did just that and learned from your past. That is the key.

Good luck and congratulations!

Best wishes for a fantastic first day tomorrow, Melissa. How exciting!

One thing I always tell friends and family when they start college is that the most important thing a degree tells a prospective employer is that you're a person who will finish what you start, that you're capable of doing a bunch of stupid shit you don't really feel like doing, because you know it's what needs to be done. That you can and will follow-through. Keep that in mind if/when you feel overwhelmed or underwhelmed with your exams, courses, work, life...

You've totally got this. Onward and upward.

Yep, and that you can read and write, research, and think. The actual 'stuff' you learn, fascinating though it is, is mostly window dressing for those skills, which are hugely transferable.
If the brief things I've seen you write around here are any indication, you'll love it. And loving it is half the battle.

Congrats. You have gained some wisdom and perspective, let it work for you.

Melissa, Congratulations on your major achievement. You may find it difficult at times, but it is nothing as compared to what you've already overcome and accomplished. Take pride in your achievements and small steps forward in your progress. When obstacles or disappointment rear their ugly heads, know that YOU have the wherewithal to not only overcome, but succeed. Don't be afraid to ask for help and be generous with your smiles. Life can be very good if you give it a chance. It can be great if you work at it. I believe in you.

You're not late. You might not be on the same timeline as some, and not the one you may have intended, but you're not late because you're ready now. And it's never too late to go back to school. Kick ass. :)

Wonderful news

Congratulations on your recovery

You should be very proud of your self

Congrats and good luck.. Perhaps you'll become a entrepreneur and realize you dont even need college. I'm not suggesting dont go to college or get a degree , even entrepreneurs tend to have some sort of business management education, just whatever works for you, just sometimes thinking outside the box gets you to a financial/career goal you're looking for.
