The Elmwick Family had long been key players in the advancement of mankind, first starting out as a group of blacksmiths in 14th Century England. They helped manufacture firearms in the 18th and 19th Centuries, worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II, and had provided major contributions to computer science and medical research by the end of the 20th Century.
The Elmwicks were a driving force behind digitizing the world, leading to a satellite-based global wireless network by 2030 and a manned mission to Mars the same decade. Humanity was temporarily set back by World War III from 2038 to 2041, but soon continued it's forward thrust with a reformed United Nations.
By 2100, Elmwick Industries had developed an artificial gravity system, which was used in the construction of the Orbital Stations above Venus, Earth, and Mars. After the Elmwicks developed the first Warp Drive in 2104, humanity expanded to the edge of the Solar System, and several new Orbital Stations and colonies were created. By 2200, advancements to the Warp Drive technology had allowed humanity to reach other star systems, colonizing dozens of new planets and moons. Up until that point, no world with an Earth-like atmosphere had been found, so all colonies were closed-off structures and spacesuits were required to venture outside. During this time the United Nations had been reborn as the Earth Federation.
In 2213, a planet was discovered that was as close to Earth as anything else they had found. It was dubbed “Terra Nova” and the first colony was completed in 2219. By 2230, several thousand researchers and military personnel were working at various sites across the planet, though it hadn't yet been approved for civilian settlement.
The current year is 2231, and a new school year is about to start at Starfleet Academy, which resides in the capital of the Earth Federation – New York City. And for a very special group of cadets, their final year at the Academy brings with it the possibility of a training mission to visit Terra Nova. Little do they know that much conflict awaits just around the corner as they stumble upon an ancient underground lab on Terra Nova, inadvertently setting off a strange machine that generates a vortex above the planet. A massive struggle lies on the horizon as a violent alien force comes from beyond the wormhole...

Cade Elmwick stood in his bedroom at his family's estate in London, going over his belongings to ensure everything he needed was packed. Tomorrow he would return to the Academy to complete his fourth and final year, and he hoped he would be selected to participate in the training mission to Terra Nova. He had received top marks the previous year in all his technical examinations, and this training mission was geared mostly towards future engineers and scientists, so he stood a good chance of being chosen.
After finishing his packing, Cade walked into his bathroom and then took a moment to look at himself in the mirror.

Well, have to shave off this beard before I leave tomorrow, he thought to himself before heading downstairs. The estate was rather large, and at one time, dozens of relatives had lived there together, but now it was mostly only Cade and a handful of staff for upkeep. His father Richard lived in a penthouse in New York, and a few uncles, aunts, and cousins were spread out across various worlds, though they only came back to the London estate for certain holidays. Richard was the current CEO of Elmwick Industries, and lived close to the company headquarters. He had offered to let his son live there with him, but Cade preferred the family estate where he had grown up – it held so many fond memories for him.
The halls felt empty now, but he could still remember the laughing and playing when his cousins Billy and Mandy had lived there. They had left when their father – Cade's Uncle Graham – went to manage a branch of Elmwick Industries in another system. Each colonized system had a company headquarters managed by someone in the family, most of whom where Cade's uncles, aunts, and older cousins.
The house chef whipped up a steak dinner for Cade, which he gobbled down. He thanked the cook and then went for a walk in the gardens before returning to his room for the night.

The following morning, he shaved off his beard, hopped in the shower, and gathering his bags before heading out the front doors, saying goodbye to the staff that had kept him company all summer. Loading his luggage into the trunk of his hovercar, he climbed in and lifted up, soaring off into the skies towards New York.

It was only a few hours before he was touching down in the Academy parking lot, positioning his vehicle on one of multiple round platforms. After pulling his things from the car, he walked over to a panel and pulled out his identification badge from his pocket and scanned it. The platform descended into an underground parking garage and robotic arms slid the car onto one of many shelves.
Cade walked into the large courtyard in the center of the campus and sat on a bench, listening to the water crashing of a nearby fountain and the birds chirping in the gardens. He saw other cadets going back and forth as they arrived at the Academy. Smiling at the serenity of the scene, Cade looked down as he pulled out what looked like a silver bluetooth device. He slid it over right ear and then uttered, “Computer, on.” Suddenly, a large holographic screen appeared a few feet in front of his face, suspended in midair at a slight angle. It was linked to the device, so if he turned his head, the screen moved with him.
“Computer, access my class schedule and dorm assignment,” Cade said to the device, which brought up the requested documents on the screen. He had reviewed this information a week ago when it first arrived, but decided to go over it again before heading to his dorm in Dromund Hall. In the morning the students would attend the Orientation Speech in the Auditorium, after which the instructors would announce the candidates for Advanced Student Training Program. Those who were selected would be monitored closely during their first week of classes, and on Monday of the second week, they would announce twelve chosen cadets for the training mission. These students would catch a shuttle to the Earth Orbital Station, and then board a vessel bound for Terra Nova. The total duration of the mission was said to be thirteen weeks – two and a half to get there, eight on the planet, and two and a half back, which would have them arriving back on Earth the first week of December.
Cade was so lost in his thoughts he didn't see the lovely blond standing in front of him and rammed into her, knocking her bag to the ground. “Bloody hell! My apologies!” he picked up her bag and handed it to her, locking eyes with hers. They just stared at each other for a moment, and Cade smiled. “Well this isn't awkward at all!” he said with a laugh.
“I guess I'll see you at orientation tomorrow,” he said as he started walking away, then turned back. “Oh, by the way – I'm Cade. Cade Elmwick. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of each other.” He winked at her and continued on to his dorm. His heart was pounding – she was so beautiful! When he had gazed into her gorgeous eyes, he had lost himself for a moment. He was rather excited about this year already!
