Here is the story premise- It will be based in today’s timeline except it begins on a cold nasty day in a city like New York. I say like because I do not know enough about New York to say it is there specifically. Also that way we can make up places there as needed. The story is a supernatural based theme, meaning that there will be Vampires and other creatures like Werewolves, in actual existence, and there are more of them than we would actually feel comfortable with if we knew the actual numbers. There are people that could be considered mages with real power, not the show magicians that work to fool those watching. Real mages, are very rare, to say there are more than 400 of them in the US might be stretching it a bit. There are those who do know that these beings exist and hunt them down. I would say this is based on the Vampire games but it will only be lightly based on those rules and guidelines. They have their own societies and rules they follow so the normal mortals do not know they exist.

OOC- Sonja Steele- She stands about 5'7", weighs about 130 pounds, her hair is long, falling down past her hips and is a deep grey, and yes oddly enough it is a natural color, as her hair is brushed out of her eyes it reveals eyes of a very clear blue. She is a single mortal female of age 24, who at this time has very little belief in the unnatural, holding to a belief of "I'll believe it when I see it." As she walks into the room her blue eyes survey her surroundings. She has just recently moved to the area from Atlanta, where she left her job there as a waitress, looking for a change of scenery.

Sonja

The three-day drive north from Atlanta had been fairly uneventful, if you didn’t count the flat tire in Virginia. The day was starting out pretty bad, it was raining and colder than she had expected, the traffic was nasty, she thought Atlanta traffic was bad, but it didn’t compare to the mess she was sitting in. She was going to be late or completely miss the appointment to look at the loft and that made her day even worse.

By the time she had maneuvered through the traffic mess, she had figured right, she missed her appointment, she would have to call the landlord and see if she could possibly reschedule. She found a payphone and called they guy, he was irritated, but after she had pleaded with him some he said he could meet her there around seven that evening. She found a hotel and pulled in to the drive. She pulled into a place, sat there a minute gathering her thoughts; she had been hoping to see the loft and settle in without having to get a room anywhere.

She got out of the car and walked the short distance to the office. The man at the desk looked up and grinned at her, “Can I help you?” She nodded and let him know she needed a room and that she would be the only one in it. With the transaction quickly completed, he handed her the key and she headed back to her car to park closer to the room. She grabbed her overnight bag and headed inside, figuring; now she could get a shower and nap before meeting the landlord.

Later that evening, she headed for the loft. The closer she got to the address; she began to realize why the rent was so inexpensive. The neighborhoods she was passing through weren’t all that bad really, just dark and ominous. She found, as she turned onto the street where the loft was located, that it was located in a warehouse district. Which wasn’t all that bad, considering the popularity of renovated warehouses made into lofts.

Pulling up to the address, she sighed, “Well I hope the inside is better.” She stepped out of her car, hitting the button on the remote to lock her doors, and then she headed inside. As she opened the front door, her attention was drawn to one of the many flyers plastered to it.

“Grand Opening- The Errant Rose”

The date on the flyer was tonight’s date, she thought maybe if all went well she would check it out. She noted the address on the flyer, it seemed like it was close, possibly right down the street, and maybe even within walking distance, well that is if the night wasn’t so cold and wet.

Mr. Smithe was waiting just outside the apartment when she stepped off the elevator. He looked her way, and then smiled, as he blatantly looked her over. She just thought he was a creepy person, and let it pass. He went through the pleasantries of showing her the loft, which turned out nicer than she had expected it to be, due to outside appearances. After an hour, with papers filled out, deposits and first three months rent paid as agreed, he handed her the keys to her new home.

Thankful things settled so easily and that she would be able to move in right away, she went back to the hotel to check out. Returning to the apartment building, she plucked one of the flyers from the front door as she headed inside. She entered the loft, and set her bags on the floor. She looked to the flyer and found that it was definitely a nightclub as it stated the hours were “Between the Darkness and the Dawn” nightly.

She went about getting changed to go out, she needed to relax after the drive and the club and a drink or two would do just that.

Arriving at the club, the place was packed. She felt a bit overdressed as she stepped inside and looked around. She had chosen to wear a black half shirt, black jeans and heels, under a lightweight black trench coat. She may have felt overdressed but in actuality, she looked as if she fit right in. She had her long smoky-grey hair pulled back and braided down her back. She received a few looks as she passed through the room, and headed to the bar…

************************************************

The pounding techno music emintaing from the speakers on the dance floor echoed through the air as I leaned back against the bar. I smiled to myself as I watched the dancers move rythmically. I have been around long enough to witness many different dancing fads, but this was easily one of the most amusing to watch.

The bartender cleaned one of the mugs and put it aside. "This is your third night here, Malakai. Your wasting your time."

"She'll be here, Luigi." I said confidently. Luigi was a very rotund man; something rarely seen in vampires, especially the older ones. The younger ones, who have only been around a few hundred years tend to slack, but I expected a 700 year old Vampire to take better care of himself. "She'll be here tonight."

"You said that last night and the night before that."

"She'll be here." I repeated. "She'd be coming sometime this weekend and I posted flyers almost everywhere." I pulled my sunglasses from my pocket and put them on. "She'll be here."

Luigi just walked off muttering to himself. I crinkled my nose. He always stunk of garlic. I had no idea how he could stand the stuff. Disgusts me to no end.

I finally got the garlic stench out of my nose when I caught a familiar scent. It matched the clothes Eddie had given me. I reached into my pockets and pulled underwear out. I still can't believe the littlevfreak stole her panties. I took a sniff and was sure it was her. I strode down onto the dance floor and followed the smell. I eventually rested my eyes on a woman in the doorway in completely black clothing. I grinned. It was her, alright.

I lifted my shades so they rested on my forehead and slicked back my black hair. I adjusted my open silk shirt and black jeans. It was charm time. I was relieved to see her move to the bar. It saved me the torture of dancing to the synthisised music.

I strode over to her with a seductive smile. "Pardon me, miss. Are you saving that seat next to you or am I supposed to believe such a beautiful woman as yourself came here alone?"

Sonja

She had just made her way through the gyrating crowd to the bar. She pulled herself up on the stool there, looking for the bartender. Then she heard the voice, "Pardon me, miss. Are you saving that seat next to you or am I supposed to believe such a beautiful woman as yourself came here alone?"

She turned to face the man who had spoke and met a pair of strikingly blue eyes. She smiled briefly, “No it’s not taken.” She blushed slightly at his comment. She had heard lines like this before and usually from creepy punks. At least he looked a little more mature than the creeps in Atlanta.

She brushed a strand of hair from her face as she leaned on the bar, hoping the bartender would come her way, but he seemed occupied further down the bar. She looked to the man who had taken the seat next to her and smiled briefly, “Pretty busy place.” She had not responded to his comment about her coming here alone, she knew from past experience it was better to let a guy think you were meeting someone whether you were or not.

Malakai

My smile faded slightly as I saw she wasnt totally impressed with my lines. Perhaps it was time to update. Nonetheless, I sat down next to her.

"Yes. This place is always busy." I said. "But the same faces get boring after a while. It's nice to see some new blood in here." I smiled at my inside joke. It wasn't necessary, but it amused the hell out of me and seemed to get Luigi's attention.

The fat Italian moved toward me, obviously surprised I had found who I was looking for. "Luigi! Get me some of your best stuff, okay?" I turned to the woman. "What would you like to drink?"

Sonja

"I can imagine. I just moved to the area and saw the flyer and figured I would check it out." Then it dawned on her that she shouldn't have mentioned just moving here.

She looked as he talked to the bartender, and then asked her what she would like. To start this conversation over. she thought but just smiled, "Oh.. a jack & coke would be fine..thanks."

She turned on the stool and looked out to the crowd, the place was definitely packed. Almost too many people for her liking, but she was here adn couldn't think of an excuse to leave so soon.

Malakai

"You heard her Luigi." I said. I turned back to her. She was obviously feeling uncomfortable. I had better make this go the right way. I couldn't let this go now. Not when I was so close.

"I'm sorry. I haven't even introduced myself. My name is Malakai Cole. I co-own this club."

Okay, not a total lie. Luigi and I have been together for awhile, So it was kind of my bar. Kind of.

Sonja

She looked back to him as he introduced himself. "Malakai, hmm interesting name, not something you would hear everyday. I'm Sonja Steele. It's nice to meet you."

She smiled as Luigi brought their drinks back and sat the on the bar. She picked up her glass and took a sip, it was abit strong for her liking, but it might help her relax some.

She turned on the stool so she was facing him. "So you actually own the place? It's different." She had seen a few clubs like this in Atlanta, but this place was slightly bigger than most. " The name is unique...The Errant Rose. Not something you would expect for a club like this I guess."

Malakai

"Sonja...now that's a poetic name." I said with a smile. "I like name's that have poetic flow. The Errant Rose is such a name, don't you agree?"

I raised the drink to my lips, making the appearence of drinking without actually doing it. Something I've mastered over the years.

"So Sonja, what would bring you to a place like this? Not the club, but this city in general. It's not exactly a postcard worthy place."

Sonja

"Yes it is... it's different." She wasn't sure how she wanted to answer his question.

"As to why here, a change of pace. Something different than Atlanta. I figured in a different city there might be better opportunites, and better jobs."

She smiled before taking another drink from her glass, not noticing the fact that the level of liquid in his glass didn't change.

"And here is where I ended up, just seemed about right." She shrugged, "I don't know why it just did."

Malakai

"Hmm..." I nodded. This was good. She was drinking and talking. The old Malakai charm was finally beginning to take effect. I motioned to Luigi to fill up her glass. Just keep her talking and drinking.

"Atlanta, you said. It must be a nice place to live." Except for all the bloody sunshine. Thank god for the inner city's fog. "Did you live there your entire life? What did you do for a job?"

Sonja

She hadn’t realized that Luigi had refilled her glass, but as she took another drink, she noticed she was feeling a little light headed. “It’s ok, but it has so many downsides. Traffic, not a lot of work and too many jerks.” She smiled just a bit, “As for living there, yes most of my life..moved there when I was 10.”

She couldn’t believe she was actually feeling comfortable talking with this man she had only met a short time earlier. “And as for work…Hmm that’s a good one. I went to school and trained in Interior Design, and ended up working as a waitress in a country bar. I didn’t realize that Atlanta was full of decorators, there was nothing in that.”

Malakai

I shook my head sadly. "It's a shame that someone of your obvious talent had to work as a waitress. But I think you will find plenty of work here. You can walk down any street here and pretty much tell it needs a good designer."

I leaned back, waiting for her to finish her current glass then signaling Liugi to refill it before I asked my bext question. "You never answered my first question, Sonja. Did you come by yourself, or are you waiting for someone? Should I be worried about sitting this close to you?"

Sonja

She laughed softly at his comment. "I had noticed that." She finished her drink and as Luigi moved to refill the glass, she shook her head no.

"Oh no thank you... They're a bit strong and I think I have had quite enough." The combination of the alcohol and the last few days driving mixed with the lack of sleep was beginning to affect her.

She looked back to Malakai. "I'm sorry. You don't have to worry, I probably shouldn'y say, but I came here alone." She blushed slightly, "And honestly it's been nice talking to you, but as I said I have just really arrived and with the few drinks and lack of sleep. I should probably be going."

She felt as if she was being rude, but she didn't like the feeling she was getting from the lack of sleep and alcohol.

I grimaced. She wants to leave, now? Well, I guess I'll have to improvise.

"I understand, Sonja. But I suggest you let me walk you back to your apartment. This town can be very brutal, especially around this club, and a tired girl who's new to the city makes for a very obvious target for the creeps of the streets. I'm well known in the area, and walking with me will get them to leave you alone."

Realizing that might sound a little condescending, I added, "While I can see that you could probably defend yourself, I think it's better to avoid confrontations altogether."

Sonja

She nodded, "I guess that would be a good idea. I drove, but live close enough to walk. Since I don't think me driving even the three or four blocks home would be a safe idea."

She laughed at his comment as he tried to cover his statement about walking her home and his being able to protect her. "That would probably be true if I hadn't had the drinks. You sure you wouldn't mind the walk, it is pretty cold."

She stood and pulled her trench coat closer about her, slipping a hand in her pocket making sure her keys were still there. Relaxing feeling the keys safe in her pocket, she looked his direction and waited to see if he was serious about walking her home.

She pushed away the feeling of her taking too many chances with this man she had just met. She figured he was only offering to walk her home, it shouldn't be a big deal.

"I don't mind the cold." I shrugged. I stood up and placed some money on the bar. It wasn't nearly enough for the drinks, but Luigi doesn't argue with me.

"Whenever you are ready." I told her. I turned slightly to see two young men standing over in a corner, decked out in leather jackets and baseball caps. I winked at them and they nodded back. They immediatly escaped through a back entrance.

I turned my attention back to Sonja and gave her a quick, charismatic smile. She didn't notice that, I'm sure of it.

Sonja

She adjusted her coat about her, it wasn't quite warm enough wear for walking. At least she lived close, and could come back in the morning for her car.

"I guess I'm ready. You think it'll be a problem to leave my car here till morning?" She returned his smile as they moved easily through the crowd and towards the front doors.

She thought the crowd seemed to move out of their way as they walked, but then again that could just be her imagination working with the alcohol.

We walked out into the cold streets, the moon barely shining through the fog in the air. I could see Sonja was shivering, so I placed my arm around her shoulders. I could barely feel the cold night air.

"So where do you live, Sonja?" I asked. "I know all sorts of shortcuts around the city."

Sonja

It was colder as they stepped outside, and she began to shiver slightly. She smiled as Malakai placed an arm around her to help warm her as they walked.

"Only a few blocks north of here. A warehouse transformed to lofts. Maybe only three blocks right up the road." She told him the street address, she was a little off on the straight up the road, it was more like up the road two blocks then right for three more.

"Is it always this cold this time of year? I haven't heard anything on the radio about snow, hopefully it is too early for that yet." Well she had one reason she should have stayed in Atlanta, it was not so cold there, not yet at least.

Malakai

"I know the warehouses you speak of. I got a special short cut. It's up this alley." I pointed to an alleyway between to large apartments. "Come on, it will get you there faster then you would normally and you will see a side of the city you usually never see." I grabbed her arm and pulled her to the alleyway and down the dark passage.

"I've taken this shortcut many times. It's perfectly safe."

"Hey there!" A gruff voice shouted. I turned in time to see two young men in leather coats and baseball hats come out of the shadows. "Give the lady over, freak." The left one said, pulling a knife. "She's ours now."

"Why don't you go back to your rat infested hole, twerps." I said to them calmly. "I don't want to have to hurt you."

"Bring it." The right boy said. "I'll cut you into a hundred pieces."

"Stay back Sonja. I'll deal with them." I moved smoothly forward, belthing one of the boys in the stomach and making him double over. I hurtled myself over his back, kicking the other kid in the face. With another quick movement, I elbowed the same boy in the face. He fell to the ground, out cold.

The other boy had gotten away from me and was headed toward Sonja, knife raised. I grabbed his wrist and flung him back over my shoulder. He hit the wall and fell to the ground with a loud thud.

I dusted my hands off and turned back to Sonja. "Are you alright? He didn't get you, did he?"

Sonja

She followed along as Malakai led the way. She was startled at the voice and turned. She didn't like the look of the two guys that had stepped into the light.

She stepped back as Malakai stepped between her and the thugs. Here it was her first day in a new city and she was being mugged, well not if Malakai had anything to say about it.

She watched in awe as he easily dispatched the two thugs. Once both thugs were down he turned to her, brushing off his hands. "Are you alright? He didn't get you, did he?"

She shook her head slightly. "No he didn't... I'm fine." She looked to the thugs and then back to Malakai as he approached, "I can't believe you fought them off so easily."

She was impressed and more than grateful that he was with her. She knew she would have been no match for two of them, one maybe if she hadn't been drinking.

Malakai

I rubbed the back of my neck. "They were just petty thugs, really. I don't know what they were doing here. This is not their turf. Someone had to teach them a lesson."

I moved to her and placed a hand on her cheek. "I'm sorry for leading you into this alleyway. It was pretty irresponsible of me."

I cocked my head slightly. "Are you sure you are okay? You are shaking slightly." And she will be feeling very weak in the knees too, if that stuff Luigi put in her drink kicks in anytime soon. I thought to myself.

Sonja

She looked to him. "Well I would have to say you did a good job. Maybe they won't return."

She just looked into his eyes as his hand touched her face, so nice and cool, but then again they were outside and she was feeling awful warm. She nodded, "I'm fine, really. Maybe a little too much to drink and not feeling well is all."

"I'm glad I don't live too far. Maybe we should go before they wake up and decide we're still fair game."

Malakai

Inside, I grimaced. The drugs hadn't really begun to take effect yet. This was going to require more work than I hoped.

But outside, I smiled at her. "Well, maybe if you are feeling a little sick, I should carry you." I put one hand behind her neck and the other behind her knees. I lifted her up in my arms, cradling her carefully. "I'm stronger than I look, huh?" I smiled and began to walk down the alley.

I turned to the thugs on the ground. I flashed them a grin. One of them stuck up his middle finger. I ignored it and carried Sonja all the way down the alleys toward the warehouses.

Sonja

“Oh.” She was a little surprised by his boldness as he scooped her up in his arms. She reached up placing her arms about his neck, “I’m sure I’m ok really.” This close up she could really look into his eyes, they were an odd shade of blue, but it was a nice blue. He had eyes you could want to get lost in.

She blinked, wondering where that thought came from. She didn’t really feel all that sick, just like she was really tired, physically. She smiled at his comment, “Yes, are you sure you want to do this? Carry me like this I mean?”

She felt a little uncomfortable she liked to have her feet on solid ground, being carried made her a little nervous. As he continued on though, he seemed to carry her effortlessly. She knew she wasn’t really heavy at 130 pounds, it was the thought of not being able to have her feet on the ground that always made her hate being picked up.

They arrived within a short time at the outer doors to the apartments, as he set her down so she could unlock the door, she felt her knees seem to go weak. She reached out quickly, well maybe not as quickly as she thought to hold onto his arm a moment. She looked to him, “Sorry.” Her eyes met his and seemed to be held there.

She smiled softly, “Thank you for walking, well carrying me home.” She wanted to invite him up to her apartment, but having just moved in she really didn’t have anything to offer him. She stood there a few moments, not sure what exactly to say, just really almost mesmerized by those eyes.
