Between Her Boyfriend and his Dad (Closed for ST217)

Danielle straightened her hair and sighed as the phone rang for the hundredth time, it seemed. She looked at it and noticed it was once again her boyfriend Barrett.

"You know I'm working," she said in the direction of the phone, not moving to answer it. "Why do you keep calling?" Her tone was matter of fact and rhetorical. She was certain he wanted to go to dinner or to a game of some sort and, at times, he expected her to drop anything she was doing to be with him. Having spent the night at his apartment two nights earlier, she figured he could make do for a few hours. She finished getting ready and pulled on some tall, strappy boots. She modeled them in front of her floor length mirror and wondered if her feet would hurt if she wore them. Tonight, she was assigned only a four hour shift at the waitress stand of Cutterly's, a rather upscale steakhouse with a loungey vibe about thirty minutes outside of campus. The restaurant featured an expensive menu, but also a club level bar where many of the city's elite gathered, often to avoid their wives, their significant other-than-their-wives, or any number of other responsibilities. It was not the priciest, or richest crowd, but the people that came and went did well enough that when Danielle waited tables, she could take home a couple hundred a night. As hostess, it might be forty dollars at most.

When she was satisfied she looked ready, she took a selfie and sent it to Barrett, for the first time responding to the calls he'd been making for the past hour. He was a great guy, but a bit needy and a bit needy for her taste, but they had dated consistently, if not exclusively, for the better part of their freshman year and some over the summer. She had gone home to Texas for the break, and now returned to the more temperate beach and party city where campus was. Only two weeks into the semester of her sophomore year, she wondered if maybe she should look for a different boyfriend. However, she seemed to be unable to think of anyone on her horizon.

How do I look? Her text said. Working until ten. Will call you after.

Moments later she left the confines of her condo apartment, headed to her car, and made her way to work.

The kitchen staff hooted and made comments until the manager calmed them down and put an end to their harassment. However, Danielle never minded such things and would not dress like she did if it bothered her. Once she checked in, she made her way to the hostess stand and relieved the little girl who had the day shift. The girl could not have been over seventeen. Probably a rookie. Dany had been waiting tables since she was 16 and felt this to be a demotion.

"I got it," she told the girl, saying nothing more in her dismissal. She proceeded to seat three couples in the next forty five minutes before sighing and expecting it to be a slow night. There were a few scattered groups of men in the bar, but the bartender didn't seem to need any help. She looked over the table chart to see the restaurant nearly empty. She texted Barrett again, annoyed that he never responded the first time she texted.

I may get cut early tonight. She waited several minutes and got no response, stuffing her phone under the stand. She was bored already. She hated Monday night shifts.

“Motherfucker!”

Alexander DeWitt wasn’t having a good day. From the minute he woke up and had to deal with his bitch of a wife to now sitting in traffic and trying to battle the evening rush hour it had been one cluster fuck of a day. Alexander muttered a string of curses and thumped his large hand on the steering wheel playing out an angry beat as traffic inched by in a slow crawl. It wouldn’t make traffic go by any faster but he had to take his frustration out on some thing until he got to Cutterly’s.

Lest he go mad before that

He sighed pinching the bridge of his nose. Work was the usual boring/ frustrating “deal with punk ass little boys who couldn’t handle the shark tank that was a fortune five hundred company”, his home life was hell betwen his bitch of a wife and his absolute airhead of a son, and the only thing he was looking forward to was getting to go to Cutterly’s a modest but still upscale steakhouse that also served as a sort of pseudo lounge catered to exactly his kind of people. It was close to the office he worked at as well so he could reasonably make it their and hang out for a while without his wife pitching too much of a fit of course It helped that she was involved in a million things and wouldn’t notice his absence until later when he was already on his way home. Not that he much cared about what she thought or what she wanted but he didn’t want to hear the argument and have her bothering him when he was in his own home.

He stumbled across the little place by chance one day and became enamored with the low-key setting and the lounge area and he high standards it set. Every once in a while he would eat there as well but most of the time he simply ordered a scotch on the rocks and sat himself in the lounge looking down at the other people who ate at the restaurant. He would sip his drink and relax even going as far to shut his phone off so he wouldn’t be interrupted. Sure he would flirt with the pretty hostesses every once in a while but to him the peace and quite and setting was what he craved the most.

If only he could get there

He finally pulled his black and silver Mercedes into the parking lot and parked. Before going in he flipped open the mirror pausing to look at himself in the mirror allowing a pleased smirk to cross his face. They said vanity wasn’t an attractive trait on a man but Alex knew he looked damn good and wasn’t afraid to admit it to himself. He had just enough grey in his hair to give his unruly black hair a salt and pepper look, his eyes were still that intense jade green but older now and wiser, and the black and red expensive suit he wore was tailored and fitted to his body showing off the muscles he worked hard to keep. He worked hard to look good and even though his bitch of an ex wife didn’t do the same and had grown fat in her old age jus meant that she was the embarrassment not him.

He popped open the door and stepped out and onto the pavement before closing the door behind him and walking to the restaurant. He smiled at some of the other patrons and gave a slight dip of his head before stepping in and breathing in the atmosphere. For the first time all day a smile filled his face and the tension on his shoulders softened as he walked in. He made his way over to the lounge area ignoring the bar and waiting for a table subtly taking control of the room buy straightening up and standing tall. He ubuttoned his jacket and smoothed out his shirt one hand in his pocket as he glanced around the room seemingly not taking or meting any ones eyes.. He noticed the hostess stuffing her phone back into the stand and frowned waiting expectantly before deciding to go to his own usual table. She was pretty around his sons age but she had an air about her that irked him for some reason. There was a sort of arrogance to her look that set him on edge as well as a sense of entitlement. He didn’t have time to wait for her to finish her texting and straight up ignored her as he went and sat down on his usual couch.

He pulled out his phone silencing it and then leaning back. How long would it take he to realize he sat down? He idly wondered playing with one of his cuff links.

“Every second you waste is a dolor off your tip” He muttered to himself turning to watch her one eyebrow raised.

Danielle glanced up as she noticed a man who somehow escaped her attention as he entered, just as he sat down in the ultra lounge. As early as it was, she doubted there was any waitress here to cover the lounge and noticed the bartender was gone at the moment, likely back in the kitchen slicing lemons and limes. She waited a few moments before looking toward the back to see any signs of someone returning to their station. Seeing none, she glanced around the main floor and believed none of the waitresses had seen the man either. She looked down at the table assignments once more and felt the man's gaze on her. In the low lights, she could not see his features, but felt certain he was annoyed that nobody had greeted him. While it wasn't her job, it would have to be for now.

The girl stepped away from the hostess stand and behind the bar, a place she wasn't technically supposed to be, having not yet turned 21. She grabbed a round server's tray and then filled a short glass with ice water, placed it on the tray with some beverage napkins, then approached the customer still waiting on service.

"Hello, I'm Danielle," she said, placing first a napkin on the small round table in front of him. Her eyes darted forward and caught his, and she noticed he had a handsome face. She smiled with her own eyes, then her lips, as she placed the water glass on the napkin before standing tall, a bit over where he sat, then continued her standard greeting. "Your server is going to be Talor." She noticed the man's dapper suit and how well put together he seemed, though his resting expression seemed a bit stern. His eyes were sharp and piercing, and somewhere around their edges she felt like they reminded her of someone, though she could not be sure just who. "Can I get you anything to drink or a menu?" She stood before him, thinking no more of this rather standard interaction, awaiting any answer he might have.

“Hello my dear” he said his features softening a little at her actions. He was a little impressed by her ability to jump and perform the other jobs of the people in the restaurant. He resolved to bump her tip up an extra five dollars and made a note before giving her his undivided attention. Their eyes locked and he leaned forward making sure she could hear him over the dim noise in the longue.

“First off thank you for bringing me my drink” He said tapping his water glass with his long finger “It more than makes up for the fact that you were on your phone when I cam in and I had to seat my self since it would seem this Taylor is to busy to take care of me I will be using you for the evening instead your boss should have no problem with it because I am a customer and as long as you do a good job there is more than a hefty tip in it” He said pausing to make sure she understood before continuing.

“Now for my drink I want a Disaronna on the rocks and I think I shall have your sample of appetizers to tide me over until dinner why don’t you go ahead and bring me some chips and your spinach and artichoke dip as well as a few finger foods” He said speaking fast and precise as he leaned back lounging on the couch and raising an eyebrow.

“Did you get all that my dear?”

Danielle tried to hide a smirk as the guy seated before her launched into some rambling, lengthy run-on diatribe, before settling on what amounted to be some order for a table of one. She was amused by his dictation that she would be his waitress, as if he made such decisions. Perhaps he was unaware that she actually did make those assignments and it would be better for everyone if she took this one and didn't scramble the assignments this early in the evening. She lifted an eyebrow as he finished demanding his terms.

"Disaronna. Rocks. Chips and dip. Appetizers." She paused. She wasn't an amateur, having waited tables at some location or other since she was 16. "Anything else," she slowly blinked her eyes in an effort not to roll them. She had seen his type before, all bluster and little else. Enough money in the bank to buy steaks for the house, but probably not enough to cover his exorbitant mortgage or car payments, though she could be wrong. She wondered what he did and acknowledged to herself that his challenging manner at least livened up the slow happy hour. She heard a low hum from the vibration of her phone back at the hostess stand and ignored it, remembering already the man's comment and annoyance that she dare be texting her boyfriend, or anyone else, while the restaurant was slow, as if he was the manager. "I'll have to find the bartender," she said. "I'm not 21. But I'll go ahead and order the appetizers." She slowly turned on one heel and began walking to the bar, amused at the tete a tete with the man in the lounge.

He watched noting the way she was about to roll her eyes as well as the small smirk she was struggling to hide. She was good clearly a professional but Alex made his money sniffing out Bull shit and she wasn’t adept enough at hiding them. He didn’t say any thing however just silently keeping track as she read his order off and turned on her heel to place it.

“Just keep it up” He murmured watching her go eye fucking her with out abandon. She was a hot little piece that was for sure but she was as disrespectful as any kid her age. His son was the same way all bluster and daddy’s money, he supposed it was that way with all kids her age these days.

But it set his teeth on edge

He decided she needed a little bit of a lesson and his mind went into over drive waiting for her to come back before putting his plan into action.

Dani walked to the bar and turned in a ticket on the digital order queue, then wrote up the man's order and returned it to the kitchen. On her way back, she stopped at the hostess stand long enough to seat a three person table and a two top. She returned once more and looked at her phone.

I'm going to play poker at Cale's the message from Barrett read. Danielle sighed and responded with a simple Ok. Not a minute later, the phone warbled again. Is that okay? She smirked. Barrett was sometimes so needy. She had thought that maybe he could come over and watch Netflix, or maybe they could just grab a late dinner somewhere on campus. If he wanted to play poker, it was fine, but she suspected he would once again blow all his cash tonight and then be cheap all weekend if they wanted to do anything like go out or even just go to the downtown music festival to watch people and listen to some bands. And now he was going to read more into her text than she ever meant. Of course it was ok. But she was certain that sometimes he would hear, "Ok, but we are breaking up," or "Ok, but no sex for you for a month." And then his apology tour would begin. As it appeared to be now. Yes, of course it is. She replied, then stashed her phone under the stand again. She returned to the kitchen and retrieved the order for the man in the lounge, placing it carefully on a larger tray, and then returning to where he sat. The bartender had already given him the drink he ordered, and Danielle placed the tray she carried on a tray stand nearby before placing the food in front of the man.

"Chips. Dip. Sampler appetizers." She looked into his green eyes once more. She felt a chill, but did not know why, and she let the goosebumps roll over her shoulders and arms only a second before concluding her visit. "Can I get you something else?"

He watched her put in his order his eyes flashing as he studied her intently. He followed her watching as she interacted with another couple of customers then went back to her stand.

“Don’t do it” He murmured watching her even though he already knew she would. Sure enough five seconds later he watched as she discreetly checked her phone. He shook hi head making a tsking sound in his mouth as he leaned back and sipped his Disarona smirking in pleasure at the burn of the Italian liquor. Here he was scratching his head and trying to figure out a way to teach the girl a lesson (that didn’t involve him pulling her dress up and giving her a spanking) when her disregard was doing it for him.

He waited pretending not to notice taking in the mood. She came back with his chips and he waited until she let them go. By now he had taken out his wallet and was playing it opening it and closing it and giving a hint as to the money inside of it.

“You can go get me your manager my dear” He said as soon as she finished “I don’t take kindly to seeing the people who are supposed to be helping on their phone I wonder what was so important to you that you felt the need to get back on your phone after I already remarked on it I hope it was important cause its costing you your tip every time you do” He remarked fixing her with an intense look “and now I need to speak to your manager and let him know which is a shame my dear really”

This time Danielle did roll her eyes. She wasn't supposed to be waiting tables at all and hadn't planned on heavy payday from the hostess stand. In addition, so long as the phone wasn't stopping her from doing her job, the managers had no problem with it being under the stand or even used. She simply said nothing and nodded, beginning to walk to the back of the house.

"Who says 'I don't take kindly to' something?" She thought to herself. "You're handsome, but you're not all that." She continued to the manager's office and found Damon Teel.

"Guy in the lounge wants to see you," she said. "He's mad that I used my phone at the hostess stand and didn't.....I don't know what...he got his drink and his food." It was Damon's turn to roll his eyes. He brushed past the girl and took his time getting to the lounge. Meanwhile Dani followed a modest distance behind and walked to her stand once more, leaving the manager to deal with the man out front.

He waited patiently

Then waited some more

Then got angry

Then he decided to let it go

When the manager finally came up. Alex smiled putting on his nicest smile.

“I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic job your hostess is doing” Alex said tipping his glass her way and draining it in one smooth motion.

“Both of your other team members seemed to have disappeared and she went ahead and took my order and took care of me” he said “besides her getting on her phone every time she thinks no one is looking I would say impressive” He said before thanking the manager and waving him off with his hand. He put his empty glass on the side and began eating his chips lounging back and relaxing allowing himself to enjoy the food. His eyes stayed on her though not so discreetly checking her out a small smirk on his face.

Dani followed Damon back to the main floor, and she walked straight to her stand, keeping a safe distance from the altercation that was about to go down. She didn't care for the guy in the bar, and while she would be happy to watch the manager defend her, she didn't need to invite further confrontation. She acted busy with the seating assignments, as if they ever changed once they were set, and kept an ear on the conversation not fifteen feet away.

"I understand there's an issue, sir?" Danielle heard Damon say. Damn right there is, she thought. This guy needs to finish his drink and get out. She waited, amused, to hear Damon tell him just that. It was not an uncommon occurrence. She and a couple of the other girls were cute. It was, no doubt, part of why they got hired. But it didn't mean guys could be sleazy and it didn't mean they could treat them like shit if they had done nothing wrong. Danielle considered this to be one of those times where Damon would win because here, he was the law.

“I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic job your hostess is doing." The man told Damon. Danielle lifted her head and stared off toward the main entrance. She stifled a grin and bit her lip slightly. That son of a bitch, she thought, feeling bad for judging him to have been a jerk. She turned and looked over her shoulder in the direction of the man and Damon and gave the man a smile, acknowledging that she had heard him.

“Both of your other team members seemed to have disappeared and she went ahead and took my order and took care of me” the man continued. "Bbesides her getting on her phone every time she thinks no one is looking I would say impressive.” Danielle gave him a wider grin, knowing now he was teasing her while still making his point.

"We're glad to have her here," Damon said. "She's one of our best." Danielle always felt good getting praise from her boss, but especially when it was made to a customer. She made a note to tell the man thank you and possibly that she was sorry. She heard Damon offer the man another drink before the man waved him off and continued working on his meal.

As he walked away, Damon shrugged slightly, then came to the stand. "Whatever you did, keep it up....he had no problem at all." She smiled in the man's direction again.

"Okay," she told her manager.

"Go ahead and plan on cutting out at 9:30," Damon continued. "I'll put Talor up here and you can go then. Slow night." She nodded once more. From her stand, she noticed him glance her way a time or two and doing so began to have some effect. She noticed he did look nice, though she also took enough concern to notice the ring on his finger. Nevertheless, she still thought it was sweet what he had done and when it seemed his drink was low, as was his water, she took a new glass to him and sat it where the water he did have had been.

"Thank you so much for what you said to my boss," she brushed her hair behind her hear. "I really appreciate it." She picked up his drink glass. "Another Disaronna?"

He watched her struggling to contain his grin as she reacted in surprise. All he did was tip his drink at her and shoot her a sexy cocky smirk before he continued to peck away at his chips.

When she finally came over he smiled taking the Disarona and tipping it at her “I think we got off on the wrong foot darling” he said sipping the liquor and placing it back down “my name is Alex” He said reaching out taking her hand and giving it a kiss before leaning back to study her.

“I was impressed at the way you handled your self” he said eyeing her up and down “beautiful girl like you most get compliments about looks all the time and while those are damn impressive” He said the smirk coming back “I can tell you got a little bit of bite to you kitten” He said tipping his glass at her and downing some more of it.

“I hope you put that good head of yours to a lot more than this” He said making a broad sweep of the restaurant “A girl like you could easily get swiped by some lecherous old man who doesn’t admire those brain of yours enough to use them….. and that body of yours to be used” He said winking at her before laughing softly.

She thanked him at his compliment about handling herself and then listened as he gave something of a small soliloquy. She felt another shiver at the mention of her body being used and immediately admired his forwardness. She felt the tiniest of blushes on her cheeks, far too slight to be seen in the dark lights of the lounge.

"I am," she stammered. "I mean, I'm in school." She held the tray in front of her a bit, suddenly self-conscious for reasons she didn't even comprehend. "I go to State." She looked around to make sure Damon wasn't watching her taking too much time away from the stand. "I'm at the Journalism school there." She paused before the conversation got too awkward. She wondered why she felt so warm all of a sudden. The man was old enough to be her father, perhaps, and yet she found herself a bit smitten. She heard her phone vibrate at the stand again, this time ignoring it until it stopped. "How about you?" She asked, then gave a shy grin. "I mean....I know you're not in school and you're married." She cringed inside, not even wanting the man to know that she had checked out his finger or think about why she might have. "I mean what is it that you do?"

He smiled pleased with the effect he was having on her “you don’t have to be so formal it’s a slow day after all come sit” He said making it sound like a command a charming one but a command nonetheless.

“You go to state huh?” He said “my son goes there as well, and you say your studying journalism? A noble profession w have to many people out there who sell bull shit as news they could use a woman like you out there taking charge and getting the hard truth out by any means necessary” He said making it sound almost dirty.

“As for me I am in sales fortune five hundred companies boring a dull stuff I assure you but its what pays me the big bucks” He said pushing some chips her way before laughing “as for me being married my dear trust me my wife is about as dull as a box of bricks and is as interested in me as a dog might be in a cat why do you think I come here and enjoy my self around such beautiful women like you” He said

She looked around once again before telling him they were not allowed to sit on the clock, but thanked him anyway. As he continued on, she remained interested and polite, though noncommittal. He seemed interesting enough, and he was the only person around to chat with on this slow night. A few more pleasantries from him and she grinned again when he called her beautiful, making her roll her eyes just a little once more.

"Thank you," she said again, and again pushing her hair behind her ear. "Can I get you anything else?" She asked once more, ready to return to her stand. "I'm about to clock out soon. I can turn you over to Talor or tab you out when I go. Whatever you like."

“Whatever I like you say” His eyes traveling up and down her frame once more before he finally smiled “No I think I will be on my way a well my dear” He said getting up and pulling his suit jacket back on.

“After all with you gone the view becomes some what lacking” He said leaning in and kissing her cheek before moving his lips inches from her ear.

“Until next time Doll looking forward to it” He said sliding a generous tip into her hands and stepping back. He gave her one last final wink and walked away not bothering to look back as he went and paid for his food and his drinks. He walked outside pulling out a cigar and lighting it as he went to his car popped open the door and in seconds he was pulling out and heading home.
