We're beta-testing our new story tags feature. Please let us know if you find any bugs or have suggestions.

I would like to suggest an ebay kind of system, where you choose your main category from the drop down menu eg incest, and then chose a sub-category from a second drop down menu eg anal [which is made up of the same categorys + general (for older stories not sub-cat, or for those unable to decide)].

This is one possible solution to overcome stories that fit many categories.

eg. non-human & romance
eg. sci-fi & non-consent
eg. group sex & lesbian
eg. mature & exhibitionist/voy

Perhaps have a side bar, and it acts as a sorter.

Incest (general)
....Anal
....BDSM
....Celebrities

Anyone else got some ideas?

Well . . .

I supposed I don't care much for the new story tags, but I'll certainly give anything new on Lit a chance ;) . I suppose I've been used to the simple, easy-to-use selectable "radio buttons" I've seen used elsewhere for pre-defined story styles and categories (seems we discussed this subject many moons ago).

anal
BDSM
gay
grp (group or orgy sex)
inc (incest)
les (lesbian)
mc (mind control)
etc., etc.

As for participants:
FF--lesbian sex
M--single male, likely whacking off
MM--gay male
MF--straight sex
MFF--three-way with a guy and two girls
etc., etc.

Furthermore, since Lit doesn't allow stories with underage sex, it can otherwise define the "younger" age m=male (or f=female), as 18-19 years of age (other sites that permit underage sex stories may use "m" or "f" as teen).
So, on Lit:
mM --is gay male sex with 18/19 year-old and an older male
fFF --is lesbian sex with an 18/19 year-old with two older females
FFFFFF --lesbian orgy, all participants over 19 yo
FFFfff --lesbian orgy with a mix of 18/19 yo's and those older
fM+ --could be 18/19 female and a mature male
etc., etc.

An author, during story submittal, will check (click) those pre-defined styles and categories that will be in the piece from a standard menu (there really aren't that many permutations and combinations that would be necessary).

Once a story is posted, a reader can search (not obligated to) for stories with one or several styles/categories he/she is particularly interested in, especially those in combination, by simply clicking those radio buttons from the same pre-defined style/category list the author used to define the styles and categories for his/her story.

I could be dead wrong on this point (unless Manu is using some kind of "soundex" feature in the tag database search engine), but it seems to me the free-form word tags Lit is using may actually limit story searches to only those that precisely fit the words or phrases the reader types in as his/her tag.

IMHO, for ease of use primarily, I think the reader should be given list of pre-defined menu of styles and categories to select from, on one convenient search page--radio button fashion--instead of being asked to build search criteria of words and phrases.

Anyway, all best to Manu and Laurel on their story tag beta-testing.

I like what you are getting at, but wouldn't like to lock authors into pre-set tags unless you have the option of skipping (eg. if you don't want to limit yourself to an age group) as well as room to put your own tags in (eg as to location - beach).

(BTW I hope to encourage discussion on this thread :D)

I like the idea of key of common tags for authors and readers to use or some universal way to improve the search function.

_______

Now that's the ticket, wishfulthinking!

Why not use a combination of story tags PLUS a pre-defined menu list? That would be a very powerful search engine, indeed, for this site and its many, many stories.

I'd like to see a list of say 100 (maybe more?) common search tags that both readers and writers could draw upon.

I also wouldn't mind some sort of "NOT" function, i.e. a search in Loving Wives that threw out anything with creampie as a tag, for example.

I do like the proactiveness, since as the site gets bigger and bigger a good search function is more important.

I'd definitely spend an extra minute clicking on boxes of common search tags.

And the NOT function, like common boolean operators such as AND OR etc.

But as Proof says, perhaps also free writing as well as the common tags.

Oh I agree with that totally. In my mind I wrote that in my reply, but apparantly I forgot to.

Authors should be free to put in "Jedi on Centaur sex" if they want :)

I am happy that the "Keywords" section in the Submissions form is now so big and roomy. It gives me a chance to list a lot of applicable search terms. Then, when we hear someone say, "It was a boy from Minnesota who has a first-time encounter with a Japanese ventriloquist who makes the boy's cock seem to recite Bassho" the search terms "Minnesota" "haiku" and "ventriloquist" can be in there. But a set of MMF non type codes will take some major getting used to, if the reader isn't a veteran of ASSTR.

Also, the generated tags I find now at the end of my old stories are decidedly strange choices.
