Bella walked along the banks of the sea in her worn out shoes, looking out as her fathers ship descended. It was always sad to see him go off on one of his voyages, but his fishing provided food, and the items he sold at market always provided the funds he needed to repair his boat. Considering her station in life, Bella was considered quite the catch. Particularly because she had no interest in being caught. Brushing her red curly locks from her face she pushed them back under her scarf and headed home.
Although she loved her little french village, she strived to experience the world that was written in the books. Have her own adventures, and be free to just live as she wished. Whether it be reading a book under a succulent peach tree, or taking a swim in the middle of the day in a lake, in nothing but her shiv. Perhaps if she had been born a boy these options would be available to her now.
She still found plenty of little pleasure in the world, whether it be teaching the village girls to read or listening to the stories of the elderly. Bella didn’t have any female friends her own age. They were too busy trying to find a husband and criticizing her for her oddness in finding pleasure in reading. It was a time where it was assumed reading would muddle a female's mind. It was believed that the more ignorant they were, the more compliant they would make as wives.
Her mother had felt quite differently, and her father agreed. The passing of her mother five years prior had made her the one that was left to take care of her father. He adored her, though often wondered if their unique approach to raising her was a hindrance rather than a benefit. It had made her a bit of an outcast. Though most of the villager’s adored her for her kind nature and sweetness.
On occasion she would be courted, but she was never really fond of her suitors. They were all so typical. She didn't want to marry a fisherman, she didn't want to be a wife and treated like a slave. Bella enjoyed her free time and the ability to read her stories. It was her escape into a different world. A world she would never know. She wondered if her succumbing to marriage would make her father happy. Still she just couldn’t bring herself to marry a closed minded man that wasn’t willing to share his thoughts and respect her opinion.
Bella placed her book upon the steps of her home, and fed the chickens, and collected their eggs. She found the more she talked to them and loved them, the more they would lay. They always had more than enough eggs, so she was able to sell them at market and used the proceeds to expand her ever growing library. “If you were my wife, you would never have to lower yourself to feed the livestock. I would adorn you with jewels and precious metals. You would have the best gowns, and would want for nothing.” Bella frowned, was she to have no peace. “Let me guess, and I would take great delight in being on your arm and shown off at what a catch you conquered? I would be placed on a pedestal each time i bore one of your sons. I would be your glorified breeding cow”. “Well yes, yes yes.. Wait.. “ It took Henri Valvoux a moment to catch on that she had baited him. Although rich, and what most of the girls considered a real catch. Bella did not. To her he represented all that was wrong with the time period that she lived in. “One day Henri, I hope you finally believe me when I tell you, as I am now. I will never marry you. I don’t even like you, you’re boastful, brutish, arrogant, selfish, and simply not worthy of me.” As he stood there with his mouth open she smiled politely, gave a slight curtsy and walked past him. Quickly picking up her book and heading inside shutting the door just as he finally caught up with her.
It would be amazing if he just disappeared and never returned. Little did she know that fate would soon have a similar experience for her. One that would open her mind to the supernatural she loved to read about. To a world that existed that no one would ever believe, and to the opportunity to actually be seen for the treasure she was.
