I picked up a copy of Reader's Digest today and there is a story in it that shows what you can do if you work hard believe in yourself and do your best.

It is how a man got his start. In 1973 he, his wife and two kids were living in a double wide trailer and driving a Buick with transmission problems.

She was working at Dunkin' Donuts and he had been working a job at a laundry for $1.60 an hour but was now a teacher making $6500 a year.

He started writing a book but threw it away thinking it wasn't good but his wife pulled it out and told him to finish it. He did and sent it off four months later. He received a telegram that he was to get a $2500 advance for the hardback. It came by way of telegraph because they had no phone. They moved to an apartment got a phone and bought a new car.

They discussed what the paperback rights might go for, his contract specified a 50/50 split. They were hoping it would go for $40,000 to $60,000 so they would get $20,000 to $30,000.

Finally the call came and he was told the rights sold for $400,000(yes four hundred thousand) and their split was to be $200,000 and that is how Stephen King got his start with his first novel Carrie.

Or at least...

Have a S.O. who believes in you.

I'd read that article,,, pretty damn amazing

I think I can,,, I think I can,,, I think I can,,, I think I can,,, I think I can,,, I think I can,,, I think I can,,, cried the littlest engine as he chugged up the mountain

I resent Reader's Digest to this day because my mom read all these anti-pot articles. I can remember being 16 and hear her going ballistic on my red-eyed ass.

But- you are correct. Life is a wonderful dream and sometimes we lose sight of this. I myself have gotten bogged down... Life is precious! Life is short!

If you love her... kiss her... tell her! If you want to change... godamn do it....

Don't let the rat race hold you. It's really cliche, but "Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life!"

I do believe in fairies! I do believe in fairies! *claps hands*
.. Wait, wrong thread.

I'm reading Stephen King's new book, On Writing, right now. It's largely an autobiography, a "making of a best-selling author" type thing. He's a very interesting fellow. He does have some good, solid advice about writing in there, too.

Riff I agree with your sentiments, well put.

If I may . . . "Today is the first day of the rest of your life"
