Beijing’s been feeling a little low lately.
According to a recent study, parts of China’s capital are sinking as much as four inches per year. The sinking is due in part to a depletion of underwater reserves, according to the study supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, CNN reported.
And with two-thirds of the city’s water coming from groundwater, it doesn’t look like the use of the resource will stop anytime soon, according to CNN.
The researchers discovered the city was sinking, after collecting data from 2003 to 2010 using satellite images and GPS data. The National Natural Science Foundation of China said the next step is seeing what impact the sinking has on transportation, specifically high-speed railways.
