We've talked about having sex IN bed ... but what about the bed itself?

What do you have?
Where did you buy it?
How much did it cost?

How about the bed frame itself?

A good link or few to shop for one of the mentioned above?

M and I are about to come into a little bit of extra money, and I've been pushing for a new mattress... its come to the point where I can't even fall asleep on it, (I am notorious for being a deep sound sleeper no matter what the conditions are) and the boxspring is shot and it would be nice to have a bed frame.

I think I'm going to go for bedframe first, then mattress and box spring so if ya'll have any info on bed frames first - that would be great.
We aren't coming into too much, so price is always a factor.

We have a little bit of a size problem as well, M wont settle for anything smaller then the Queen size bed we've been sleeping on for two years or so now, and the room is maybe a foot and a half wider then the bed is.
So nothing elaborate and huge and bulky, but something simple that lifts the bed off the floor, and has space undernieth to store extra bedding sets in airtight bags.

I have no idea where to start, and its a step by step project so its ok that I wont get instant gratification - but I do want to know what else is out there and how to start. I'm not interested in special sleep number beds, or remember foam, or water beds - we have two dogs that sleep on the bed from time to time - I'm just looking for a step up "out with the old and in with a new model."

How did you choose? How did you start?

Funny us both looking for beds at the same time. We could always share. ;)

Waterbed frame will give you the storage underneath that you need.

Pick one up at a local yardsale very cheap and make sure that you have all the pieces/

I have a queen sized memory foam set that wasn't anymore expensive than a regular set of boxsprings and mattress.

Do what I did and go lay on them. That way you can find what is right for you.

We have a queen size King coil. We have had it for 13 years and it is still in terrific shape and very comfortable. When we first got it we very dutifully flipped it like the instructions said but now we hardly ever do. We use the frame that came with the mattress and the headboard that used to be with our waterbed. I had to finally stop using a waterbed because it began to make my back hurt.

Mmm, beds...

Sealy pillow-top (both sides so when you turn it, you still have pillow-top on the top), plus a down feather bed on top of that. Bedding is all cotton, all down. Invest as much as you can on the boxspring and mattress - you'll be sleeping on it every night for years and years.

The headboard and footboard are a hand-me-down from a friend whose parents bought it way back when...

Since you stated that you don't sleep well at all at this moment I would say go for the new mattresses first. I know it's hard to be wise; I'm a total design freak (in a good way :) ) and I would be tempted to go for the bedframe and nice headboard first too, I must confess....

We have an AUPING bed(www.auping.nl), which is a well known brand in Europe; don't know about the US... It is fairly expensive although it does not look very expensive. We don't have a headboard (the original one is very expensive also) and at first I was looking everywhere for a cheap alternative. We moved to our new home a few months ago and with the new bedroom came the new chances! I painted the wall behind our bed black (yes...) I had already bought a large mirror with a baroque-style (silver coloured) frame (very kitch, the expensive "look" for, let's say, $ 50) and altered two bedside lamps from IKEA by replacing the lampshades with pink ones. The bedside tables (in the same colour of wood) are from IKEA too and all things together make a very nice and not too expensive combination. Now that the "picture" is complete I don't miss a headboard at all!

If you're used to sleeping in a large bed I imagine it will be hard to size down. I always say: you can cuddle up as much as you want and whenever you want to but it's nice to have enough space to also be able to have (half of) the bed to yourself if you feel like it. So I guess my advice would be not to size down...

As for storage: I'm all for keeping the bedroom as clutterfree as you can, also under the bed. A bedroom is for relaxation, sleep (and sex, haha). So unless you absolutely need the space (under your bed) I would rather see if there's things I could throw or give away, instead of stuffing them under a bed where they would probably only be gathering dust...

Good luck with the choices you have to make.

my Husband had a good mattress and boxspring prior to our having met. No idea what kind or what He paid. It's topped with a goose down feather bed thingy. It's very comfortable.

We purchased a very attractive black metal oriental style head/foot board at a local yardsale for $20.00. The bed is topped with a free standing (it hangs from hooks in the ceiling above the bed) ivory colored mesh canopy/mosquito netting, which is tied back at all four corners. (i keep saying i need to take pictures ... it's a very cozy, yet romantic bedroom. The walls of the room are covered in many black framed mirrors, & lots of candle sconces. We even have a huge black iron candleabra hanging from the ceiling.)

I stand corrected, its really a King :)
The room is tiny and I'd love to push stuff out of the room or even give some of it away ... but hes very stubborn and wants to keep all his *stuff* in his room and not spaced out where we do have the room in the living room or put the shelves up at the right height so the dogs and steal stuff off of them and chew them to bits.
Under the bed would be the extra linens, winter clothes, space heaters or extra box fans... things we don't want to chance to leave in the storage space.

you all really have hinted at a good start. checking out the yard sales. the ones I've been passing haven't had bed frames though sadly. gr.

Bed frames, the part that holds the mattresses off the floor, usually come free, or are discounted, when you buy a mattress set or headboard/footboard. If they don't offer it, you can usually get them to throw it in. Also, some headboards require a specific type of frame, so it might not be a bad idea to check that out before buying a frame separately.

Good luck and happy shopping!

that is fucking AWESOME, I had NO idea. Is that a USA thing? or certain company thing?

What about the frames? Does anyone think of the fucakability, (i.e posts, headboards, etc.)?

Cheers,
Brad

Ahh, my Husband emailed me a photo of our bed which i didn't even know we had. :)
Besides it's fashionable appeal, the style of the head & foot boards allows for quite a bit of creativity combined with cuffs, rope, chain etc ect ...

i have restraint in mind as well, it was number 3 after price and style. lol.

Heh ... for us, if the style didn't allow for restraint, i think we'd have been content with no head board .. no foot board .... just the mattress, boxspring linens and bed frame. We were more open to fluctuation of style and price, but it had to be restraint-friendly.

I have a full bed, with a pillow top mattress (that isn't very comfy, it was rather cheap). I recently got a memory foam mattress pad at Costco ~ around $99 for the full size and oooooh, what a difference it has made!

The frame....I love my bed! It is a metal sleigh bed that I purchased from a unique catalog/online store, www.midnightvelvet.com. Right now, my bedroom isn't big enough for both the headboard and footboard at once, so I only have the headboard on it now. I believe it ran me around $300 or so with shipping.

Something else that I did, to give me more space under the bed for storage, is I bought a set of four risers at Linens and Things, I think they were around $10.00. My bed is several inches higher than before and I can fit more stuff under the bed!

I would love a bigger bed, but there really isn't room for it in this house and besides, it is just me.....I'd only have more room to migrate during the night, lol!

I've just bought a new bed because my old one (which was only a year and a half old) had formed a depression in the middle and it hurt my back. So off I go to buy a new one, and I got the most expensive one I could afford, and it was recommended for bad backs so I thought I was good. But it turns out the matress is made of foam not springs, and over time the foam gets squashed down and so you end up with a soft matress with a big depression in the middle which is exactly the problem I had with the old one. Plus it stinks because they treat the foam with chemicals to kill mould and dust mites. So I'm really kicking myself. It's not the end of the world I suppose, but next time I will definately get one with springs instead of foam.

Nice! (the photo, the bed)
Will see if I have a photo of our bed and I think it would be fun if others will post theirs too. Only have to find out how to add a photo to my post.... do I need to make more posts to be able to do that? Hmmmm...

i am not certain as to whether a minimal post count affects the ability to post an image attachment, or not. If you are enabled, upon clicking the 'reply' button, you'll then see a button just below the text window, which says 'manage attachements'. That allows you to browse your computer, and select an image to upload.

And, ty ... i really like our bed, but the overall decorating of the entire room is what is most impressive. We have a new digi cam. i'll have to find time to snap a few shots from the doorway in order to capture more of the room. Looking forward to seeing your's too. It would be nice to see photos of others' beds as well. :)

Thanks! Yes, I see it now. It's in a separate "box". Now I have to find the picture of my bed and bedroom. Will check in later. Ciao!

My husband and I have a king-size sleigh bed (as well as the dresser w/mirror, nightstands, and TV armoire) from the Bob Mackie American Drew collection. Although we were looking for something a little more restraint-friendly, we fell in love with this bed as soon as we saw it. It was a bit on the expensive side, but we bought the pieces as we could afford them, with the bed obviously being the priority; it ended up taking us a couple of years to buy everything we wanted.

Because we'd spent so much on the bed, we skimped a bit on the mattress, but we still ended up with one that was middle-of-the-road.

My in-laws have an extremely hard mattress. They bought one of those memory foam mattress pads, and it made a world of difference.

Pictures please :) ! Googled for pictures and found them at LA Furniture Online. Looks romantic. Nice...

What defines a Queen size and King size bed (measurements)? We don't use these phrases obviously although one would say King size if the bed is just very large. I think the largest regular bed here is 200 x 220 in centimeters; I have a 180 x 200 bed. Maybe you think it's funny I want to know but it's just out of interest, nothing kinky or anything :D

Hmmm have to find the pictures of my bedroom still....

We needed a new bed a few years ago, and my mom had some good advice. The stores generally make it impossible to price-shop/compare mattresses by calling them different names. Also, the "sleep/mattress" stores can really rip you off if you're not extremely careful (we had experience with them trying on multiple occasions). Anyway, we've always bought beds from a department store (now Macy's) due to quality, knowledgeable staff, comparable prices, and they usually have a $0 down, no payment for 6 months deal (better to have the money in your account for that time than in theirs).

I'm not sure if you have access to Costco, but they have lots of quality beds and furniture at great prices, and if you don't find the one you buy to your liking, you can return it for a year.

Right now, we have a queen Simmons Beautyrest, and I believe it was about $500. It's not a pillowtop, but is very cushy. We bought the basic frame years ago at a thrift shop, though I think the store would have given us one for free or like $10. In a tiny apartment, we don't have room for head/foot boards, but I've seen several I really like at Ikea and Costco.

One tip is to buy one of those plastic zip-up mattress bags (about $8 at a store like Target) to protect from moisture, dust and allergens. On top of that is a fitted padded mattress pad, and then sheets, and you don't notice the plastic at all.

I looked at lots of buying guides like this when we last bought:
http://interiordec.about.com/cs/bedsindex/bb/aabyb1001bbed.htm
http://www.bettersleep.org/OnBetterSleep/mattress_facts.asp
http://www.stretcher.com/stories/980806c.cfm (really good on stretching your $$)

I bought a memory foam pillow a few years ago, and I love it so much, I wouldn't hesitate to try that type of mattress when we're ready for a new bed.

Edit: There was a really good thread on mattresses here months ago, so perhaps a search will yield some great advice as well. :)

I have a water bed, and my god I love it! Feels so nice on a hot day to wrap yourself in blankets and actually cool down because of the cold bed. Same goes on Cold days and having a nice and warm bed.
