Because it's not all about politics

It's strange that they are so rare considering that one is trolling on a man-made structure. Very cool looking animal.

Other very rare species have been found recently by accident:

In Australia, a very rare form of ant was supposed to exist only in part of the vast Nullabor plain. Researchers spent weeks trying to find it where it was last seen. On the way home, they stopped for a toilet break about 300 miles from where they had been looking. One of the scientists found he was pissing on a colony of the ants.

Another scientific group was looking for a rare chameleon last recorded in 1915. One of them went for a walk in the hotel gardens - and there it was...

The coelacanth was supposed to be extinct and last seen in the 1930s. One researcher found a specimen for sale in a SE Asian fish market. When he asked the vendor, he was told they were plentiful in a nearby fishing area. They were.

Ogg - that reminds me of a cool program run by the Smithsonian "Bugs in Our Backyard". It's crowdsourced research where the participants go out and take pictures of bugs in their yard (or neighborhood) and log them. They've found some cool things about bug ranges, bug habitats, and new species.
