Last night BBC3 showed a program about Body Dysmorphic Disorder, a form of O.C.D. which is estimated to affect over 50,000 people in the U.K.

I'd never even heard of BDD, and was slightly sceptical that it was a real medical condifiton until checking the web.

After watching the program, I realised that I know one or two people who clearly suffer from this condition.

Dear Skrik,

Did you know two separate versions of your AV have been stolen by art thieves since 1994? I just nicked it again.

Regarding BDD, I believe I know people who certainly exhibit signs, but it might be like OCB v. OCD; they might just be exhibiting behaviors associated with the disorder, without actually having a diagnosis.

Interesting info, though, particularly in how it differs from Amputee Identity Disorder. The human mind is a crazy place to live.

I knew someone with the latter... yes, "crazy" I guess, would be the optimum word there...

You'll always be beautiful to me, Joe.
Keep taking the tablets.

I'm just here to comment on how cool Joe's av is.

The Earl

Okay then, how cool is was. I liked the Munch!

Makes you wonder how you should really answer the question about whether the jeans make her butt look big.

I have a friend who is gorgeous. I teasingly call her "Barbie" because she seems that "perfect" to me. She, however, does not think this way about herself. At first I thought it was the usual sort of self-confidence issues, but having known her for years now, I don't think it is. She has serious issues with her body, her hair, her face, her breath, her everything.

On the flip side, I have a drop-dead gorgeous male friend. Built, fit, hubba hubba handsome. He, too, suffers from some kind of skewed body image. He says he feels "untrim" when he could easily pose for some body-building magazine. It's not just some ploy, either, to attract compliments or reassurance. He sincerely believes it.

It's unreal that these two have such skewed images of themselves.

BDD? I'm a firm believer it exists.

Epp! Scary stuff, the human mind, eh?

My sister wound up in the hospital last weekend. She went in for a routine colonoscopy, and the anesthesia apparently reacted with some other medication she takes. (she used to get severe migraines, and also takes ADs, but I don't know what all) She wound up with Transient Global Amnesia, where she couldn't remember anything for a couple days. She said it was terrifying, and I believe it. For example, she knew she had a daughter and her name, but she couldn't place any mental image or recognition of her. She would ask the same questions after just several minutes. Now in the last few days it's all coming back to her.

Scary indeed.

Glad to hear of the happy ending, though. :)
