To perhaps gain an insight into British issues and thinking, I have, for the past few months, followed BBC News America...I have now reached the conclusion that BBC News does not enlighten the world on news of England or Europe in general, rather they have become a full time participant in the media wars here in the US on several levels. In general, promulagating the standard progressive left wing agenda.

This evening there was an extended piece on American's beef eating habits; they showed a two inch thick, juicy red in the middle steak being consumed by several different people, vivid enough to make ones' mouth water and then implied that Europeans had to be content with cold pea soup.

Maybe they like cold pea soup, I don't know, but those ravenous back country Americans chowing down on rare beefsteak must really go over well in third world countries that don't even get cold pea soup.

We all know you hate Americans for a variety of reasons, but, gads, be a little subtle; or is that beyond the ability of modern day Brits?

This is the Brit way of doing business. They paint themselves into corners, step on their dicks, and pretend theyre superior. Its WW2 all over again. They havent been relevant since 1914. Fuck them.

I spend about 40% of my time in the UK and Europe so maybe I can respond. Firstly it is slightly hilarious that anyone seeking an insight into British issues would bother with the BBC. The BBC has become a partisan supporter of Labour party politics for the past fifteen years and these days makes little attempt to give time to alternate viewpoints.

It is a bloated organisation living off its past reputation and the fat of an annual licence fee of $200 charged to every address with a television in the country. Its executives pay themselves extraordinary salaries and they are prime candidates for major funding cuts as soon as the next round of licence fee levels is to be determined.

Brits do not hate Americans, in fact they quite like them as people but on the whole the Brits do despise the American Government and political classes which to my mind seems quite reasonable and to show they are even handed the Brits despise their own politicians at least as much.:)

Fuck them, indeed James, as many times as you can.

I got into radio, doing news before I was twenty years old; rip and read, Associated Press and United Press International, UPI, and it was then I began to realize that I was managing the news that tens of thousands of people listened to.

The method is subtle and one slips into it quite easily; there was always more items of news then one could fit into a three minute, top of the hour, headline news gig, so, one had the liberty to pick and choose, aside from the obvious lead article, what one chose to present as news.

That was fifty years ago and it has gone from bad to worse to worst, especially since women, under equal opportunity, got into the business of delivering the news...you know what the split tails concentrate on, split tail news...

Along the way and in the midst of a dozen different radio and television stations, I picked up a degree in History and discovered Historiography and I learned that History is quite like the news, Historians pick and choose what they want to present as 'History' just as I did with 'News'.

Like the current Global Warming farce, the corruption has spread to science and one can no longer trust any source to provide objective informaton.

such a deal, eh?

;)

Locally the split-tails perform sequential teasers from 5-7; and 90% of it is soccer mom drool such as covering barbecue benefits for fallen cops or their injured dogs, or sometimes a report about GET ACQUAINTED DAY at local elementary schools.

The split-tail squad tries to avoid anything controversial that might affect ads.

Heh! Split tails in politics and the real world do even more damage. Being physically weak and mentally controlled by an uterus, hormones and anyone that can bleed for a week once a month should be held in awe.....but their essential defining characteristic is, by definition, compromise between conflicting views...which means...as you well know, a gradual diminution of that which is good and right by the that which is bad and wrong.

If it were not for women voters, the left would never win another election.

Think about it...:)

I broadly agree with most of this, but the problem is you have to bother with the BBC if you want an insight into British issues, for two reasons:

1. For good or ill, most British people interact with the BBC on a daily basis and can't help but be influenced by it.
2. It's not at all indicative of how the unwashed masses think, but it is indicative of how a certain coterie of the left-leaning opinion-forming chattering classes think, and like it or loathe it, this group makes up a large part of the British political class, still.

I like certain aspects of the BBC - the sports coverage is excellent, and it makes fantastic documentaries. But the news and commentary side is horrendously biased and in general pretty pernicious.

Makes sense. If you notice, the Left never whoops for anything unless it feathers their nests and screws everyone else.

Brits believe they still matter, and they dont. The BBC is merely mold on the crown.

Believe me, most British people do not believe they still matter. Most British people would be quite happy to retreat under a rock and never be heard from ever again. The idea that Brits long for the glory days of Empire couldn't be further from the truth - in fact it's the exact opposite, as the widespread opposition to Tony Blair's foreign adventures proves.

Just listen to any radio call-in on politics on the BBC and you'll see what I mean.

How true.
And as for Bliar - he can go and loose himself; the *****.

The BBC is only one of several purveyors of television news in the UK.

The BBC's left-wing bias for news reporting has been known for many years. Perhaps they are compensating for the right-wing bias in printed newspapers?

Almost every printed newspaper carries more news stories than the BBC News and in greater depth. Even The Sun, around the bare-breasted women, fits in more news than the BBC.

People tend to watch the news reporting channel that matches their own bias, and read, if they read at all, the newspaper that caters for their own prejudices. That is not just a British phenomenon.

For all that can be said about the BBC.... American media is an even sadder affair.

The network news is lucky to have three or four stories on any day... usually political. That takes about 10 minutes.... the rest of the news is fluff and entertainment....

The BBC may be biased... but at least they do have news in their newscasts.

As for newspapers... they get thinner and thinner (partly due to advertising losses) and have more and more cartoons and fluff. There was a great upheaval this morning... it seems that the cartoon Cathy is going into retirement... where will American Newspapers be without Cathy.

Who is Cathy? Whatever happened to Alley Oop & Dick Tracy and the Schmoos?

What year is it?

:)

Totally agree OGG ... nobody ever wants to hear anything they disagree with and that includes me I suppose.
I try to listen to diverse opinions but it is difficult and it's a task.

Cathy is retired and living happily in Portland.

Alley Oop finally made an honest woman out of Oona and they're living incognito posing as a married couple in Modesto but Alley was picked up 2 days ago .for killing all the Schmoos.

Personally I think he's been a hired killer for years. Him and that darn axe; Dick Tracy caught him

... and best of all Dick Tracy has taken the Chief of Police Job in SF as a result of capturing Alley Oop in Stockton... or was that Fresno?

Nobody else wants the job so they've been looking for a good Chief who has a jaw for the job.

You might put this on the nightly news.

You're still working as a stringer ... right? We can go national.

Hell yes, Loring! But forget about the SF Chronicle and the LA Times, I get a few pieces in San Diego and of course the outback and the north where all the real people live.

Thanks for the update on the characters mentioned, my sources are lax it seems; much appreciated.

About to pull the plug and close down for the evening as I am attending my youngest son's wedding tomorrow, but the theme of the responses to my thoughts about BBC America, bubbled up in my mind again.

I visited England, enjoyed London and the country side to the boat-train to France and have fond memories of that motorcycle journey so long ago.

"There will always be an England..." someone can remind me of the source of that, but when all is said and done, that 'greatest generation' who held on when all seemed lost, made a lasting impression on me and I am saddened to sense the apathy in the replies to this thread.

I make light of the 'nanny state' England seems to have become, but your responses raise thoughts to another level; just what will be the role of England in the future?

North Sea oil reserves will not last forever. If I recall correctly the British birthrate, minus immigrants, is below replacement level. What will be the trademark singularity of England or Great Britain in the near future?

At several times in the past three hundred years that birthrate imbalance would have been true of the United States. Apart from the Native Americans, all US citizens are descended from immigrants.

It depends how you define immigrants. If those who have been immigrants and are now British citizens, or have the right to stay permanently, are included as parents in the "British" birthrate, then the rate is well above replacement level. There has been a recent change in indigenous British birthrates too, with a higher trend.

England, not the UK, has attracted immigrants for hundreds if not thousands of years and eventually all of them become assimilated into English society, changing it in the process. Why not?

I agree with that... but I don't think there's a right-wing bias in printed newspapers overall. The Sun, The Mail, The Telegraph and the Times are right-wing to varying degrees, but The Guardian, The Mirror and The Independent are pretty left-leaning.

Are you able to provide a link so that we can see what you mean; many BBC programmes have a link to a website item. I can't see one for this, but may have missed it.
