Batwoman To Return As Lesbian

POSTED: 9:52 pm EDT May 31, 2006

NEW YORK -- Batwoman is coming back -- and coming out of the closet.

D.C. Comics is bringing back the classic character as a lesbian. The new Batwoman debuts in July as part of a weekly series that started this year.

The 5-foot-10-inch superhero has flowing red hair, knee-high red boots with spike heels and a super-tight black outfit.

A top editor said D.C. "wanted to make her a more unique personality than others in the Bat-family."

The original Batwoman was started in 1956 and killed off in 1979.

The editor said the step isn't "just about having a gay character." He said D.C. is striving "for overall diversity."

Reviews are mixed on Web sites devoted to D.C. Comics. One critic said ugly superheroes might be more groundbreaking, offering the examples of "200-pound woman, man with horseshoe hair loss pattern, people with cold sores."

*sigh* And I always hoped Wonder Woman would be the first one out of the closet. ;)

Wonder Woman is much more into BDSM. I mean she's got the magic lasso that when she ties people up they are forced to submit to her will and her one weakness is when you bind her arms together at the braclets, she becomes a total sub.

And why does she have to be a redhead on top of that? I guess because everyone knows those fiery Reds have raging hormones and tempers to boot... :p

Where have you been, Ducky? ;)

Languising in apathy. ;)

Actually work, a little writing and doing stuff with my daughters. (Also playing the Sims2. The addiction rears it's ugly head once in a while  )

For some reason I just haven't been in a posting mood latley.

I know what you mean. Disapointing, ain't it?

Well, maybe we'll get to watch at least. :D
Always been my problem. The women I find the sexiest are often gay. I guess I like the assertiveness.

Hmm, maybe a Halle Berry-Catwoman hookup with this Batgirl. :D

Now, who should play Batgirl?

Ah, no, no, no! This is not "Batgirl." This is "Batwoman." Different animal...so to speak. D.C. comics are too chicken-shit to turn Batgirl, a perennial favorite, into a lesbian. So they bring back nearly forgotten Batwoman to be their token L-word lady. Wise move.

The question really is, is she going to fight with Batman over Batgirl and what is poor Robin going to do with himself besides masterbate?

Um, that's the point! I mean, what kind of guy are you? Don't you want to watch your fantasy woman having sex with other women? Isn't that the ultimate fantasy?

Before, of course, she decides she wants to experiment with guys...you in particular.

Could you possibly tell me where to obtain such a set of bracelets. [For authorly research only, of course!]

Themascara, AKA Paradise Island. Home of the Amazons. Unfortunately the location is unknown, and besides men are not allowed on the island. (I've done a bit of research on this myself ;) )

I hear you can also get a good deal on invisible planes there. Talk about a stealth bomber. Only probem is, the pilot is visible. Never could figure that out.

Agreed. Also, she can fly on her own now. What does she need the plane for?

There's a movie out called Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, guess we know what the mystery is now. ;)

Your friend is right--there are no lesbians in mainstream, superhero comics because all such comics are male fantasies and that means the women either have to be saved (flexing of male power fantasy) or be dominatrixes (being dominated male fantasy).

But there is that other male fantasy about watching two women go at it--and that includes having a dominatrix dominate another woman ;)

Of course, what you're not being told is that Batwoman is only going to show up in a limited series. If she goes over big, they'll keep her. If she tanks, they'll forget about her. Either way, they keep the character and copyrite to the name.

And they can always have her decide that she's bi.

That's not entirely true if you count supporting characters that aren't capes. Inspector Maggie Sawyer, head of the Metropolis SCU, has been openly gay for a while now. Also, I believe she is the only recurring gay character on an animated series (not counting adult cartoons like Simpsons or Family Guy). I remember one episode of Superman where she was injured and her lover was by her side the enitire time she was in the hospital. They played it subtle but very touching.
