You never have had to have a Kindle to read an Amazon e-book.

I don't have one.

I don't have a kindle either, I have a "kindle for PC" app.

I tried putting the Nook for PC on my computer a year and a half ago. I have no idea what happened but it fucked up everything visually even though the settings were not changed.

Never bothered again.

I put Kindle for PC on my computer and it works a bit weird as in where it decides to place my order of books where it chooses. I have it sorted by 'most recent' and the first 12 are books I downloaded ages ago.

It has its moments, but it is the next best thing to owning a Kindle.
