There is a growing move afoot to ban private schools. I believe that this movement is going to grow over time, mostly fueled by the various teachers unions. It's all about the money.
There were a lot of consequences regarding public education as a result of the Wuhan Flu. The total closure of some public schools had parents seeking alternatives and one of those was private schools along with home schooling, and communal home schools. The 'online learning' also pulled back the curtain on what was transpiring in the public school system re. critical race theory, sex education, and now the mask mandates. A perfect storm as it were.
The Federal government funds the public school systems to the tune of $13,187 per student. (This is actually broken down to per student per day but the $13 grand number would be the total if the child attended daily.) Since the beginning of the Wuhan Flu approx. 1.5 million kids have been withdrawn from the public school system. That is a nationwide loss of $19.78 BILLION dollars to the various public schools. This, of course, translates into a loss of jobs for teachers and administrators.
The current uproar over the various school boards, their response to the parents and the threats from the DOJ towards those parents has had the effect of accelerating student exits from the public school system. The rational on the parents part is as expected as it is rational. If their kids aren't enrolled in the public schools they don't have to deal with the school boards OR the FBI. This is naturally going to translate into even more loss of monies for the school districts and the effects those losses will demand.
So the various teachers unions and some other advocacy groups are beginning to lobby for the banning of private schools and, I suspect, home schooling will be included. I further suspect that if the "progressive" political elites would jump all over this if they could figure out a way to exempt their own kids.
I have no idea as to how far this effort is going to go but the fact that this effort is gaining traction in some circles means that it is likely to start moving to the forefront of public discussion. Terry McAuliffe's comment, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.” has raised a LOT of hackles, but it is indicative of what the top down statist's think about the parents and the direction they would want things to go.
Again, if it weren't for the fact that the "progressive" elitists send their children to private schools this would be a shoe in. The various teachers unions are among the largest voting blocs for the "progressives" and then there's that God awfully large pot of money involved. They also know that without some sort of radical legislation the parents are gong to win. The school systems will financially starved into submission.
I can hardly wait to see the various proposals that will remove choices from the parents while preserving their own elite options.
