I haven't seen any hype in the UK...

I don't get HBO
That's too bad. It's good some GREAT programming. I also am looking forward to the encore of "College." I LOVE "The Sopranos."

I got it when I lived in the dorms... but we weren't supposed to. *snickers* But I do remember watching it, there are some good things.

So do I

With Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks on the project, I have HIGH hopes for it.

It's gotten excellent reviews from just about every media outlet, including people who didn't like "Saving Private Ryan" This series is based on fact, so there's no sugary Hollywood storyline to get in the way. The idea was to depict the war as accurately as possible, and Hanks and Spielberg were appparentely able to resist going overboard on the tugging of the heartstrings.

I read the book, though it's been long enough ago that I don't remember exactly who is who and what happens. I think it's going to be an emotionally draining thing to watch, because, again, it isn't a Hollywood story. It shows some really horrible things, some events don't portray American troops in a very good light. Can't wait to see it, it should be some remarkable television.

You made me stop and think about "Private Ryan" and how it effected me. It was emotionally draining. I had just finished reading "The Greatest Generation" when it came out. I had lost my Dad several months prior, and the movie and the book made me realize how our fathers and grandfathers were so willing to sacrifice everything.

I can't think of anything more important than honoring all veterans and preserving the memory of those who died in battle.

"Private Ryan" IS based on fact

THeir was a REAL person that a group of soldiers saved and sent home. I don't think his name is Ryan, though.

"Saving Private Ryan" I think was a novel based on a true story, not a non-fiction description of events. I'm sure there's quite a bit of changes in "Band of Brothers" to help with narrative flow, character development, etc, but it's supposed to be mostly non-fiction.

Watching the first 20 minutes or so of "SPR" was about the most intense movie experience of my life. It was on during a party I went to and there were people drinking and talking and the credits rolled and everyone fell silent. And no one said a word for about a half-hour. Put a bit of a damper on the party atmosphere, but it arrested everyone's attention.

There were a couple of things I didn't like about it, tho. You see the begining, the old man at the cemetery, he looks at the tombstones, he looks off in the distance, the camera zooms in on his eyes...and the scene switches to a closeup of Tom Hanks in the landing craft. I assumed that Hanks's character was the old man, a reasonable assumption based on the way the scene was set up. Spielberg should have handled that better.

And then, at the end, when you've been absolutely worn out by what you've seen, the old man clutches at his wife with tears in his eyes and asks his bewildered wife, "Tell me I've led a good life." It was all wrong, there was no need for such a blatant emotional appeal. From what I've read, "Band of Brothers" avoids stuff like that. I don't need a sledgehammer to the head to understand that what I've just seen is extraordinary.

I have seen some Hype in the UK

It follows a group of American soldiers from their training, through D-Day and into victory in Europe. It's a true story, based on a book by the respected historian,Stephen E Ambrose. Unusually for a Spielberg production, this seems to not be just revisionism. Incidentally, the guy who plays Maj. Richard Winters is an English actor (an unheard-of Damian Lewis).

The series starts in October on BBC2.

I agree COMPLETELY!!!!!!

I COULDN'T BELIEVE what I was seeing. And, about the beginning, I THINK Speilberg made you believe it was Tom's character on purpose. At the end of the movie, when you realize it's Damon, your suppose to be suprised. But, what do I know?

But Hanks was killed before that scene.

I agree with your view on the final scene. But that's our Stevie - leave 'em crying.

A good begining to the series. Don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but very good.

The tension level while you're watching it is excruciating. And then you think, what if you actually had to be the guy doing the shooting? Tension? What do I know about tension.

Ever play paintball? You get all camoflauged up and get a semi-automatic gun that fires off paint pellets at surprisingly high speed. I've played a few times and I love it, and you can't believe the adrenaline rush you get when you're shooting at someone, and getting shot at. I can't imagine what goes thru your mind when you're actually trying to kill people who are trying to kill you. The stress it places on your body must be unbelievable.

Impressive, although...

THat D-day invasion scene was HORRIBLE!!!!!! I mean, COME ON!!!!!! Are they trying to make it look fake on purpose? When they built the scene up, I was like, "This is gonna be cool." Thinking of the scene in SPR. But, when they got to it, I said, "OH MY GOD!!!!!!!" Other than that, the war sequences were INTENSE!!!!!!!! CERTAINLY the most graphic i've seen since SPR.

I thought the first episode - Part I and II - we're quite well done... I will continue to watch it. I almost even managed to get past the fact that Davis Schwimmer is a "Friend"...

Me, too

David Shwimmer was QUITE GOOD as a drill sergeant.

The invasion scene - do you mean the parachute drop?

They can't exactly round up a few hundred DC-3's and film them flying in formation while dropping paratroopers, much less being hit by AA. Actual footage would have looked terrible. I thought the scene was extremely intense and reasonably realistic. I don't think the realism was nearly as important than the terror it represented.

It scared the shit out of me.

Miles,

What I mean by that, is the whole scene looked like it was done on a computer,(which, I'm sure, MOST of it was.) The island didn't even look like an island. To me, it looked like someone painted it. Have you ever played the Nintendo game 1941? THAT's what it looked like. I thought the scene in SPR was MUCH MORE realistic. Probably because that scene was done on the ground. But, my opinion. I still LOVED the show, however. The war sequences AFTER the invasion were INTENSELY REALISTIC!!!!!!! The clip of next week's show look SPECTACULAR!!!!!! Looking forward to it.
