Researchers suspect oral sex to blame for rise in tonsil cancer

The incidence of tonsil cancer has tripled in the city of Stockholm since the 1970s and doctors at the world-famous Karolinska Institute there think they know why.

Oral sex. Or perhaps French kissing. And changes in sexual behavior that took place 20 or 30 years ago, says Tina Dalianis, a professor of tumor virology at Karolinska.

Her research has directly linked the increase in tonsil cancers to the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than 100 different types of HPV, some of which cause cancer. One, for example, is responsible for 99.7% of all cervical cancers.

The study found that patients with HPV in their mouths are much more likely to get tonsil cancer than patients who don’t have it. In fact for patients who are HPV-positive, the rate of tonsil cancer has gone up seven times since the '70s, Dalianis says. It takes between 20 and 30 years for an HPV infection to result in cancer, so the people getting sick now were infected in the '70s and '80s.

A friend of mine developed cervical cancer, presumably as a result of HPV. When I saw this post I went off to reeducate myself. I knew that symptoms in men were usually hard to see, unless you developed genital warts or similar. So, I wondered about a vaccine for men.

From this website: http://www.cdc.gov/STD/HPV/STDFact-HPV.htm

"There is currently no vaccine licensed to prevent HPV-related diseases in men. Studies are now being done to find out if the vaccine is also safe in men, and if it can protect them against HPV and related conditions. The FDA will consider licensing the vaccine for boys and men if there is proof that it is safe and effective for them. There is also no approved screening test to find early signs of penile or anal cancer. Some experts recommend yearly anal Pap tests for gay and bisexual men and for HIV-positive persons because anal cancer is more common in these populations. Scientists are still studying how best to screen for penile and anal cancers in those who may be at highest risk for those diseases."

Mine just got jerked out in December so I doubt that I'm at risk. Can't infect what you don't have, after all.

How can this vaccine not be safe for men and boys, if its already safe for women?

And now pistachios are linked with salmonella.

What's left that matters?

Whew! They're Sunkist, not on the recall list. Thank god, I'm addicted to Pistachios.

Now what's this about blowjobs?
