Yeah, McCain screwed the ploy up. And, I think, trumped himself in the public eye (which has always been easily distracted--nothing new about that) with the David Letterman gaffe. Now he has "personal dishonesty" logged in the back of the public eye--which latches on to a David Letterman much more easily than onto a mere presidential candidate.

Yeah. But it wouldn't have been much of an issue, really, if he hadn't been across the hall taping with Katie. I'd have preferred to see him go on Letterman, be serious and take control.

No, the issue is that he lied to Letterman (or at least that's what Letterman claimed). If he had just said that "I'm sorry, but I don't feel that I can go on a late-night humor talk show with what's going on in the country," he not only would have been telling the truth, he would have had justification--at least in my eyes. I think they all degrade the position when they go on the late night talk shows. (Even though that's what the public likes.)

That's right. Like I said, begging off wouldn't have been an issue if he hadn't been with Couric when he was scheduled to be with Letterman.

I agree he should have not gone on a late night comedy talk show. And I agree that it degrades the position when they go on these shows. They need to retain gravitas. But I also understand they are trying to reach as many voter demographics as they can. Was it Ron Paul who did the skit with Stewart, Colbert and O'Brien during the writer's strike? Whoever it was, it was clear he would never be president.
