Jackie Kelly and his brother Seth stood still, while the photographer's camera did it's work. Jackie, age twenty four, was the older of the brothers. He wore a nice pair of gray slacks and a matching vest, with a gray dress shirt, with the top button undone. He was handsome, in a rough sort of way, and had a derby hat on his head. On his hips, he wore his gun belt and in his right hand was his Colt revolver.

His brother Seth, two years his junior, had a similar build and look if not a bit more slender, but sported a thick moustache and shaggier hair. He wore brown slacks and a vest, with a brown tie. At his waist was also a six shooter and he also wore a hat, though it had a wider brim.

The brothers had arrived in Carter City Colorado with two hundred dollars in their pockets and riding good quality mares. They and their gang had been robbing stage coaches and banks in Texas for a years now, and their reputations had grown. Three months ago, the gang had disbanded and they had headed out of Texas, to try to find a place to lay low. As they traveled, they spent much of their money on whores and drinking, but there was still some left.

Their careers as criminals had began when a local land baron had run them off of their father's ranch, by using devious means. He had not only poisoned their water supply, but set their barn on fire and eventually simply had a band of masked men attack and kill their father. The land baron had owned the bank in the closest town. They did not have any proof that he was the one committing the crimes, so they had robbed his bank in retribution. They had also intended to gun down the land baron, but he had been to heavily protected. The villain had issued a reward for their capture and so they had run. Once they started running, they never stopped.

After a long while, the photographer closed the shutter and promised to have the picture ready in the morning. They shook his hand and headed out onto the bright streets of Carter City.

Carter City was a boom town, created when the mountains nearby had proved to contain gold. Quick as a wink, the government had stepped in and thrown the Injuns off of the land, which had been theirs according to treaty. This was done so that God fearing Christians could come in, and rape the rocks for their gold.

Overnight a town had sprung up, full of temporary buildings and temporary merchants. Everything you could need was available, from a bath, to a shave, to a steak dinner, to a whore. The boys already gotten cleaned up and were headed toward the Golden River Saloon, to get a meal and a bed for the night.

As they walked down the wooden sidewalks, wagons and horses went past. The road was dirt and contained the droppings of horses, so most folks kept to the sidewalks. They tipped their hats to pretty ladies and joked with each other, often shoving and lightly punching.

Finally they arrived at the casino and pushed their way through the swinging doors. The floors, the walls and the ceiling were all made of wood. There was saw dust on the floor, to absorb spilled whiskey and beer. Behind the long bar stood a bear of a man in a dirty apron. His curly hair hung down to his shoulders and a thick beard curled over his massive chest. He was wiping mugs with a dirty rag and threw a dark look at them, as they entered.

The round tables and wooden chairs all showed signs of repairs. At half the tables sat men, drinking, swearing, scratching and gambling. Most were cowboys or local laborers, looking to blow of some steam. A few wore fancier duds, and were obviously gamblers or traveling salesmen. The brothers grinned at each other and sat down at table in the corner, away from the plate glass window, which miraculously was intact.

ooc: You can play whoever you wish. You can be a saloon girl, or someone looking for some help. I don't want to get caught in some room upstairs for the entire game (though I am not against that). Hopefully we can have a real adventure. There are two brothers, because we can kill one off, as some point, to create drama.

Georgia walked the streets of Carter City, without much of a care in the world. She wore a dark blue taffeta dress with black decorative trim with a small hat to match. The color made her red hair stand out, but it accentuated her blue eyes. She sighed a little as she thought about how she came to be in Carter City.

She had originally ran away, wanting to become an actress. She had gone with a troupe that she had had a friend in, and they were to travel the country putting on plays. However, when the troupe stopped in Carson, it was more than happy to leave Georgia behind, as in truth, she didn’t really have any skills at acting, which for the most part, she knew to be true. She only wished they had told her they were leaving instead of dumping her here.

Luckily for Georgia, she had a very forgiving and worried father who quickly wired money to her. She was grateful to have such a loving father, and soon, she would be home, though it would be another three weeks before the state left to head towards the state which she was named after. So for now, she simply tried to make the best of Carter, did a little shopping, and not wandered around aimlessly, her black lace parasol over her head, to protect her fair skin.

She was walking past the saloon when some brute grabbed her by the waist and drug her in. She yelped in shock and was surprised to find herself set down at a poker table.

“She’s a player…” the drunken man slurred as he too sat down. The other men started to complain about a woman being at the table, but the larger man told them to shut up. “You wanted five, we’ve got five. Besides, she looks like she could bare to lose a few buck.” He laughed, the others joined in and finally dealt her in.

Georgia, while surprised to find herself suddenly in this situation, remained calm and collected. She very gracefully closed her parasol and set it down beside her, and then pulled out some money from her small bag. She knew there was no getting out of this, and in all honesty, she didn’t really want to. Her brother Bret had taught her how to be quite a card shark, and in about and hour, Georgia had cleaned out all four men.

She rose and put her winnings into her purse and smiled at the daintily as she opened her parasol. “Thank you for a lovely afternoon gentleman.” She said with a bragging smile. She then took a shot of whiskey that had been on the table and then returned the empty glass to the table. “Good day.” She smiled again at the dumbstruck looking men.

Jack and Seth had watched the woman playing poker with interest. She was a looker, to be sure, and knew how to play cards. While they watched, they had been discussing who would have a better chance with her. Jack had always had an easier time with women, with his somewhat brutish charms, but Seth was just a nice fellow and that appealed to some women. Rarely had they clashed over the fairer sex, since their tasted varied, but it was always an easy topic of conversation.

Over the past few years, as they continued robbing trains, stage coaches and banks, Seth had wanted to leave the life. He had sorrow that their father was gone, but did not see how violence would bring him back, or bring his eternal soul more peace that he already had in Heaven.

Jack on the other had, still had an intense, burning hatred for their mortal enemy, Newton Morris. The entire time he had plotted revenge and saved everything they had stolen. Even now, revenge was never far from his mind, thought the reality that they had been close to being caught had forced him to agree to regroup in Colorado.

At times like this, with a whiskey in their hands and a steak in their bellies, they could remember to be brothers again. Out on the range though, Jack had become more and more intense. He had been taking stupid risks and pushing for bigger jobs, in hopes of hiring help to take down their father's killer. At his lowest he had accused Seth of not giving a shit about their father and said he might as well go dance on his grave.

As the woman finished up the game, the large man who had dragged her in off the street was slowly standing, with a frown on his face. "Now just a cotton pickin' minute there little missie! You ain't allowed ta gist vamos without given us a chance ta win our money back!" He had a lower, gravely voice, but the way he whined made him sound like a cranky toddler.

The brothers looked at each other and then slowly stood from their chairs.

Georgia turned around and looked at the man that addressed her now and smiled at him. “Well my dear, I never asked to play the game. As I recall you dragged me into it…quite literally” she told him with a sweet smile and southern charm. “However, I will buy you all a round of drinks for being such delightful sports and…” she paused and sauntered towards the bar to pay for their drinks. She looked over the woman next to her, a blonde, pretty but nothing special, she would have to do, “And this nice young lady to keep you company.” She said as she laid more money on the bar.

“How does that suit you boys?” she asked as she walked back towards Carl, the upset player in question. “Now darling, will the make you feel better?” she asked sweetly as she looked up at him with her big blue eyes.

Carl nodded slowly, as he stared into her eyes. A tiny drop of drool fell from his mouth. "Yes ma'am. That'll do."

They brothers grinned at each other. The lady was good. Jack winked at his brother, and said "Don't wait up for me brother." Seth stared at him and rolled his eyes. His brother's method of seduction was the direct frontal assault. It often resulted in a slapped face and a public scene, but inevitably he would find some willing warm body, and they would sneak off together.

Seth was a bit more selective, which was to say that he had romantic notions, which his brother was mercifully unburdened with.

Jack approached Georgia, hat in hand, and gave her his best grin. "Afternoon Miss. Me and my brother 'been watchin' you play, and we were mighty impressed. Seth, I say to my brother, cause that's his name. Seth, that there's some kinda woman. That there's a woman I want to buy a drink."

Seth sat back and sighed. The fact that the lady had enough money of her own now, to have just bought a round the the idiot brigade, amused him.

Georgia was pretty pleased with herself after subduing the man, rather, men that could have very well taken her life if she had not done well by them. No man liked to be showed up by a woman on any level, not even her brother was overly pleased with it. Luckily she DID have a brother, and had a vague idea as to what men cared about: money, booze and women.

“Well you enjoy everything Carl darlin’, you too boys” she smiled and was about to leave when Jack approached her. She went back to being herself, instead of the sickeningly sweet quasi-con-woman she had had to be with gentlemen from the poker table.

She smiled and blushed a little at Jack’s words and then looked over to see the brother in question. She wasn’t sure what to do, she had been rather lonely since she had been left in town, and this attention was helping her rather bruised ego. “Well, I wouldn’t mind another drink…so long as it’s a sarsaparilla.” She smiled and waited to be shown back to the table.

As she was seated she looked across the table at Seth. “Good afternoon” she smiled at him warmly. She knew she should leave, her being in this saloon would do nothing but ruin her reputation in the town, no matter how little it was. “It’s very kind of you gentlemen to buy a lady a drink. I was afraid I was about to have my neck wrung by those men over there” she confessed, the weight of what could have happened catching up with her now. “Are you two from around these parts?”

Seth smiled back. "Can't say as we are Miss, and I am guessin' you aren't either. Don't usually see ladies traveling 'round by themselves, but seems like you can take care of yerself. Sure handled that fella well." Seth was pretty sure that she was a gambler, with the way she had handled those men. The amount she spent to keep safe wasn't but a fifth of what she had won off of them, and worth the price of staying safe. Getting into fights over poker games was not the sign of a professional. He worried for his brother though. Most gamblers were one part con artist also, and his brother was wouldn't know to pour piss out of a boot, when it came to women. That was what got them in to trouble half the time, with Jack flapping his gums.

He was not sure how she had gotten herself into the game. It had looked like she had just been hauled off of the street. Maybe Carl had been cut in for part of her take, but he did not seem smart enough to grasp a simple scheme. She was not trashy, or flashy, or plain. Whoever she was, she was really very good, but Seth wasn't buying what she was selling.

Jack returned to the table with a bottle of sasparilla and a bottle of whiskey. He slide into the chair next to Georgia and slide her bottle to her. "Don't believe anything my brother tells you, Miss."

“No, no I’m not” Georgia told them with a smile. She felt she was in an odd situation and wasn’t exactly sure how to handle it. Both of the gentlemen she sat with seemed nice enough, but she knew she shouldn’t stay in the saloon for much longer.

When Jack returned with their drinks, she smiled and thanked him before pouring some of the sarsaparilla into a glass and sipping it. She chuckled as she was told not to believe anything the brother told her. “He didn’t say much, he merely commented that it was odd to see a woman such as myself traveling alone. He wouldn’t be wrong of course. I wasn’t really alone until a week or so ago. I was with an acting troupe….we had…creative differences and so I opted to stay here until the next stage to Georgia leaves. Then I will depart this fair city and return home” she said with a small smile, but it was clear she felt defeated.

Georgia had never really wanted the life she was groomed for. Sure, she didn’t want to be poor, but she also didn’t want to have to marry some man that she would despite to keep her family happy. She enjoyed a small amount of freedom with her family, but she knew if she were to be married off, it would be taken from her completely, and this is why she felt such a sense of defeat at going home. She had failed and faced a future she was not entirely sure of.

Georgia took one more drink of her sarsaparilla and then began to rise. “It was very kind of you gentlemen to buy me a drink, but I fear I have overstayed my welcome in an establishment that I shouldn’t really be in to begin with. “

Seth could tell Jake was about to protest and cut him off. This was a nice girl after all, unless this too was part of her act. If she were nice, then she didn't need Jake corrupting her. If she was trying to con them, it was a good act, and that also meant Jake needed to steer clear. Besides, Seth realized that he didn't want his brother getting his rocks off with this particular woman. Regular sort of girls had never frequented the sort of places where they often found themselves, so it had never bother Seth before when his brother set his cap for a dame.

Seth stood and glared at his brother for a moment, before turning to Georgia. "Thank you miss for the honor of your company. My brother, and I won't keep you any longer and we wish you good fortune on your return trip." Seth had the ability to talk pretty, when he needed to. His brother had always ridiculed this, and the fact that Seth often ended the day reading from one of their mother's books. For Seth, it was a way to remember her and to connect with what had been lost. Their mother had died in childbirth, when Seth was twelve. The baby, a little girl, and gone to be with the Lord as well. It was their mother that had taught them their letters and numbers and it was her six precious books which had been Seth's legacy from her.

Over at the bar the men were already deep into their free whiskey and Carl was following a pretty little blond, with a tired look in her eyes, up the wooden staircase.

She smiled sweetly at Seth and Jack as they bid her farewell, “That’s very sweet of you. I hope you too will find safe passage in where ever life takes you.” She said and then looked towards the doors. She had been in the saloon far longer than she had thought and it was dark outside. Walking around Carter City during the day without anyone was one thing, but to do so at night, well, it made her uneasy. She turned back to the brothers to look to them for help.

“I know I have already imposed on your kindness enough, but it seems time as passed so quickly that it is now quite dark outside. If it wouldn’t be too much trouble, would you be so kind as to walk me to my hotel? Ruffians are easily dealt with within the confines of a public place, however I fear that should I run into any out there, that no one would know I was missing.” She confessed.

Both brothers almost pushed each other as they went to either side of her and offered an arm. Jack was thinking that the evening was looking up, if he could just get rid of his stick in the mud brother. This girl was no innocent school marm, he was sure, and Seth was just getting in the way. Hadn't she said that she was an actress? He did not know much about theater, but he knew what their father had always said about actors. He said they were a shiftless lot given to debauchery and licentious behavior. That sounded hopeful to Jack!

"Seth, It don't take two of us just ta walk the lady home. Why don't you git back and rent a room, 'for all them is taken?" He gave his brother a knowing look over Georgia's shoulder. His brother just glared back and him and kept walking. Jack frowned. He had to find a way to get that darn fool to leave, because he had not intentions of share the lady's affections.

Georgia was somewhat relieved to have someone walking her back to the hotel. While she didn’t know Jack or Seth well, it seemed like neither would do her any harm, not that she knew of anyway. Either way, a demon you knew was better than a demon you didn’t know.

So, she took the arms of both of the brothers, so that she wasn’t rude to either and allowed them to walk her back to the hotel. “You know if you need a room, why don’t you just get one at the hotel?” she asked, since it had been a point of argument anyway between the two men. “I’m sure there is something open, I know the two rooms next to mine are empty. “

Luckily, the walk to the hotel seemed rather uneventful and they were soon in the hotel lobby. “Thank you so much for walking me home gentlemen. Would you care for a brandy in way of a thank you?” she asked as she motioned towards the hotel’s sitting area, where there were men enjoying brandy and cigars. “It was very kind of you to walk a stranger home” she smiled softly.

Seth, always the force of reason, thought he had enough to drink already, as had his brother. "Thank you kindly miss, but I am going to see if I can procure those rooms." The lobby of the hotel had a small counter at on end, a staircase goin up along the back wall, and the other side was open and lead into an area with comfortable furniture and a roaring fireplace.

The walls were painted a delicate blue and all of the woodwork was polished. It was a damned site better than the brothers were used to and he just hoped his brother didn't bring up prostitutes in suh a class establishment, or ruin his room. Seth almost though about walking his brother over to a brothel and dumping him in their parlor and then coming back for a room here, but it was still his brother, even if he was stupider than a bag of hammers.

The old man behinf the counter gave him a friendly smile and gave him the keys. "Checkouts at noon. No single women are allowed in your rooms either." Seth assured him that they wouldn't give him any troubles on that account and then headed back to the sitting area. His brother was already plopped down on a couch, drinking from a glass mug.

Georgia nodded as Seth turned down a drink, but did at the very least, show his brother to the parlor while Seth conducted his business at the front desk. It was becoming fairly clear to her that Seth was the mature brother, while Jack was the café free go lucky brother, to put it lightly. Her brother had had a few friends like Jack, so she was vaguely familiar with this type of personality. She sat in a chair near the couch that Jack was on, to make sure he didn’t do anything stupid while his voice of reason, Seth, got their rooms squared away.

Once Seth returned she rose elegantly from her chair and gave him a soft smile. “I see you’ve gotten everything squared away. I can’t thank you enough for making sure I reached the hotel safe and sound.” She told them both. “Perhaps, since you were not in the mood for a drink, you would be so kind as to allow me to buy you breakfast in the morning” she offered. “I would hate for such a kind deed to go unrewarded.”

internet out- phone post- sorry for mistakes

Seth gave her a slight bow. "I can't speak for my brother miss, but I would be greatly obliged for the breakfast and for the pleasure of your company." From behind him he could hear footsteps. A more than slightly drunk Jack put a hand on his shoulder. "So where's the room brother and when's the whores acomin'?" Seth put his arm around his brother and mounted the steps. "Good night."

Across town, as the darkness descended, a lone figure rode into town. He wore a silver star and a black stetson. His long, weary face had a hawkish nose and a thick moustache, above a cleft chin. He rode a black mare and wore a long black coat, over a pair of deadly steel peacemakers.

Back at the hotel, the brothers mounted the stairs. Jack fell across his bed fully clothed and waited while his brother helped him take off his boots. The room was just a simple box with faded rose wallpaper, a lumpy bed and a dressing table with a toilet set. A single oil lamp sat on the dressing table.

Seth, after helping his brother get to his room, found it to look about the same. He sat on the edge of the bed and took off his boots, before rubbing his tired feet.

Georgia’s eyebrows raised as the word “whores” was mentioned as a drunken Jack stumbled forth. She covered her mouth with her hand so hide the giggle that laid there. She promptly regained her composure and smiled at Seth, “Good night”.

Georgia followed suit not long after Seth and Jack had headed up and went to her own room. It was nicely furnished for the money her father was paying, a large four post canopy bed with a down mattress, vanity with mirror and a small seating area. She locked the door behind her and undressed and then slipped on a long cotton night gown.

She then sat down at the vanity and started to pull the pins out of her hair. She smiled as she thought about beating all those tough men at poker, and again when she thought of Seth and Jack. Jack was certainly a rascal, but it seem that Seth kept him in check. She supposed they kept each other in balance, Jack probably kept Seth from being too serious, and Seth kept Jack from getting himself into too much hot water.

Georgia finished brushing her hair and opened up the window in her room to let in the cool night air. She then crawled into her plush bed and went to sleep, smiling as she looked forward to breakfast the next day.

Texas Ranger Jonathan Wright tipped his hat to the saloon keeper. "Much obliged friend." He had found the Kelly boys, after chasing them all the way from the Mexican border. They had been a tricky foe, but they had finally let down their guards and went off with some woman to a hotel.

The hotel lobby was mostly emptiy, except for a few men drinking brandy. He held a finger to his lips when the owner looked up. It took the work of a moment to check the book and see which rooms they were in. Simon and John Kent were surely his boys. He checked his pistols and then quietly mounted the stairs.

Jack couldn't sleep. He had been tossing and turning on his bed, remembering his father's corpse being flung into the cold ground. He had not had enough whiskey to properly forget, or a whore to help him not care. Suddenly he remembered the pretty little thing who had got him a drink and suggested that he get a hotel room next to her's. That must have been a signal! "Stumbled out of his room and over to her door. He knocked quietly, hoping not to attract Seth's attention.

Georgia’s eyes slowly opened as she heard a knocking on her door. She heard a voice calling to her, one that she recognized as Jack. After all, there were very few people in town that actually knew who she was. She wondered what the problem was, and eventually, got up out of bed and wrapped a shawl around herself as she walked towards the door. She slowly cracked the door open and looked out to see Jack.

“What is it Jack? What time is it anyway?” she said as she looked around the hallway looking for Seth. She could smell the booze on Jack and knew that something was amiss. “I think you should go back to your room Jack.”

Seth had heard his brother in the hallway and was not at all happy. He was bothering the lady next door, who was not the sort of woman Jack should be with. She had already said that she wanted to protect her reputation and a fling with Jack would not do that at all. He stepped into the hallway to call to his brother, when he saw a flash of silver down the hallway. He slipped back into his room, grabbed his revolver and then tiptoed back to the open door and sunk down to his knees.

He was pointing his revolver at the shadowy figure started yelling.

"Hold it right there Jack Kelly! Get yer hands up or I'll plug ya!"

Jack did not drop to the floor, but dove forward, on top of the woman. Seth wasn't sure if this was to protect her, or because he was dead drunk. Either way he started unloading his pistol toward the dark figure.

Georgia screamed as Jack suddenly lunched at her, landing on top of her. She screamed out again as she heard gunfire in the hallway. “What is going on!?” she asked in a panic as she managed to get out from underneath Jack, scooting on her butt to the wall farthest away from the hallway and the gun shot. She covered her ears and looked around, scared out of her wits, but also strangely exciting.
