so the gynea said to me we better start preparing for incase Vana has the baby earlier. he said she could go into labour anytime.

i know if its a premie they stay in hospital for like a really long time but i'd like to check that she has everything she needs.

and ive never had a baby so i have like NO clue. Shes got lots of stuff already. but to be safe help me here.

what do u need for a new born baby? and if its a premie is there any stuff u need extra?

indulge me  :rose:

nappies...more nappies than you think you'll ever need *L* I'm sure you have plenty of clothes -but if the baby may be early, you might need some smaller sizes.

With this cold spell you'll need socks, mittens and warm layers for the little one.

I don't have any experience with prem babes, specifically though, so I'm not sure if I can be that much help there.

Also I am *gulp* thinking back to 5 years ago when i had my newborn...so I'm probably forgetting obvious stuff.

Part of that is going to depend on where baby is sleeping and whether she'll be nursing or bottle feeding.

Some of the basics-
infant car seat
baby clothes, lots of gowns and warm one piece pajamas are good for winter and they make them in preemie or in 0-3 months. Hats are important for winter, too. You don't need too many of any one thing because they grow so fast, except for the jammies or gowns cuz babies tend to be messy. :)
diapers
receiving blankets (good for swaddling and to just have around for messes

The good thing about infants is that they just need to be warm and fed; they don't need that much in the way of accessories. If she plans to bottle feed, she'll need bottles, etc; if she plans to nurse but baby is premature, she may need a pump if the hospital doesn't provide one.

I wouldn't worry too much, as the hospital tends to give you just about everything you need and then some anyway, or at least they do over here. The only thing I can think of is that if the baby is a preemie, Vana may need to pump her milk for a while until the baby is okay to nurse. Usually, most hospitals will encourage the mother to do this, but if they don't bring it up, you may want to suggest it and make sure she has a good breast pump available.

ETA: Oops, I hadn't hit enter yet and didn't see Sophie's post. Yeah, what she says. :)

Glad to be of help -I guess if the clothes are a little big it doesn't matter, it becomes an issu if they all swamp the poor little one.

Hat..whoever said hat needs a gold star. *grins* very important -you loose alot of heat via your noggin.

babies getting her own room but she'll be sleeping next to vana in her own cot thingie for the first few months.

and she'll breast feed for as long as she can, cause she did that with her daughter and firmly believes in that.

shes got a newborn baby car seat and chair thingie that goes with it and all.

blankets, I gotta check if she has enough of those. and hats.

thanks luv  :rose:

Sweetie, if the baby comes this early, there will be a lengthy hospital stay involved -- perhaps even up to (and beyond) the actual "due date."

:rose:

When I had my first baby ten years ago I was convinced I was going to breastfeed so didn't bother buying any bottles, sterilising equipment or formula milk.

When my little bundle arrived, it was just no go with the breasts and because things hadn't turned out how I wanted with the birth (do they ever?) I decided to bottle-feed.

However, my daughter was born on Good Friday and we left hospital on Easter Sunday. Here in the UK, NOTHING was open. So...I had to make a mad dash to a late-opening chemist and buy one bottle and some formula milk to last until the shops opened the next day. We sterilised our one bottle in boiling water until we managed to buy a more efficient steam steriliser in a huge Toys R Us store.

Oh, and I went through the world's supply of bibs. And towels underneath the bibs for the sick...

She'll need a cushion for the car seat. My daughter was born on-time, 6lb 8oz and didn't even remotely fit in the car seat. They make something that goes around to make it smaller, to keep the baby's head from moving around. The hospital gave us a care package that got us home and through the first couple of days. That'll give you a great idea of what's important (buy stock in diapers and rash cream  ).

Preemie clothes... buy some just in case... because if the baby comes early, none of the "newborn" stuff will fit for a long time...

From a completely different perspective... tickets to some really cool concert for the mother. Then at least she has something to look forward to - like a kind of night off where she can let her hair down.

That's what I did with my sister, because everyone was buying presents for the baby, while she got nothing despite all the pain and sleepless nights she went through. :rose:

My friend mixed them at the House Of Blues. I'll spare you his opinion (we soundmen/musicians get pretty critical). But suffice to say, you won't ever have to compete with me for tickets. Now if Fishbone comes to town...:D

I can only see this from the other side - as the husband. The one thing my wife wanted above everything else was peace of mind. One of you needs to be calm in the wildest storm, one of you needs to keep a level head when baby isn't feeding or sleeping. They are tough, they always pull through, but parents suffer the strains and anxiety. Baby may be tearing you up inside, but you need to be strong for 'mother', keep her calm because her anxiety feeds straight to baby - and you can't buy that peace of mind.
