I blame inept civics instruction for the election confusion and quarrels.

The Founders created America to have dual sovereignty, the States controlled much and the Federal Government controlled a little. That is, we had 51 seats of government. When I forst voted in 1970, 18 wasn't the minimum voting age everywhere. In Florida it was 21, in Georgia is was 18, and 19 or 20 other states. I think 1920 was the first time women could vote in every state. We got our Civil War after the Supremes made slavery legal everywhere in 1857.

After the 2000 election debacle Florida got rid of vote recounts. Hillary cant contest the votes here. Popular votes matter in your state but not in others. It gets worse. If the election went to the House, California and Rhode Island get one vote each.

We are not a democracy. We are a republic. California lets illegals vote, Texas don't. We use the electoral vote to reconcile the state diversity. Next time New York may let 12 year olds vote, Alaska maybe not.

Most people have been taught that we live in a democracy and that this country was founded to make everything turn out equally well for everyone.

The even greater level of butthurt would be awesome if the recount ended up taking the election away from Trump but not giving it to Hillary either. It then goes to the house where she loses again.

How about the current Democratic fantasy about rogue electors? What if a few rogue electors decided to throw a few Electoral College votes Johnson and Stein's way? Again, it goes to the House and Trump wins.

The Democrats and put all the eggs in the basket of controlling the entire nation from a pen and phone weilding President King. This should have realized when they started losing State houses that things were not going their way

As I understand it, Hillary can prevent the affected states from casting their electoral votes but not enough to deny Trump the election if the House decides. The effort is designed to stop an electoral college majority for Trump. What Hillary really wants is to be the next mayor of New York City.

So are you saying this is a bad thing or a good thing?

I happen to think it is desirable, and every time someone wrings their hands over the oppressive power of the federal government, I like to remind them of the very things you brought up. In Kentucky, as in many states, the sale of demon rum is allowed or prohibited on a county by county basis, and occasionally even by municipality. Racetrack gambling and a state lottery? Yea. Casino gambling? Nay.

What's not to like about a republic?:)

The more people appreciate the power that their state actually has, and quit worrying about what the federal government should do to the citizens of this state or that state that they don't reside in, the better.

We are not supposed to be homogenized.

Never let facts get in the way of a good rant.

News after the Trump/Clinton debate:

(CNN)Donald Trump on Wednesday refused to say he would accept the result of the presidential election if he loses to Hillary Clinton, raising the possibility of an extraordinary departure from principles that have underpinned American democracy for more than two centuries.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who is leading Trump in most polls, said her competitor's remarks were "horrifying" and accused him of taking refuge in the idea that any event that turns out against him -- even an Emmy award that goes to a rival -- is "rigged."

"That is not the way our democracy works," Clinton said. "We've been around for 240 years. We have had free and fair elections. We've accepted the outcomes when we may not have liked them. And that is what is expected of anyone standing on a debate stage during a general election."

She continued: "He is denigrating -- he's talking down -- our democracy. And I for one, am appalled that somebody who is the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that kind of position."

You missed another quote, from Trump.

"Of course, I would accept a clear election result, but I would also reserve my right to contest or file a legal challenge in the case of a questionable result...."
And now Trump is questioning the popular vote results, especially in CA, VA & NH. If there were election irregularities in the 3 states he names, why not all states?

And how did Jill Stein raise $5,000,000 in a few days?
It's called donations.
