Donna Miller peered up at the door to her first graduate course at Howard University. She checked the room number one more time to make sure it was the right one before entering. She straightened her long black shirt and flattened down her white blouse to make sure there were no wrinkles before subconsciously touching her dark brown hair wrapped in a tight bun. She walked through the open door and sat around the rectangle table.
No one was in the classroom except for one guy who she thought shouldn’t be here. He didn’t fit the stereotype of nerd, she thought. “He should be out playing football or something,” she thought as she took her books out of her knapsack. She could feel his brown eyes checking her out as she piled her laptop and other books onto the table. A blush crept up her cheeks at the thought of such a gorgeous guy looking at her.
She kept her face down so not to meet his eyes. It was getting very uncomfortable as she squirmed in her seat. Thankfully, more students piled in the room as she saw through the corner of her eye, him getting out of his chair, walking towards her.
She had to wonder if he would be interested in a girl like her. She always referred to herself as a “Plain Jane.” The type most guys would never give the time of day when there were so many other choices out there. She was completely lost in her thoughts that she didn’t realize he had sat down beside her.
