So, I'd like to get a crop, but I'm noticing they come in a dizzying array of sizes, end shapes, materials, etc., and figured you all would have some good advice for me on this! :D

If you or someone you know has a great crop, I'd appreciate it if you'd pass on any pertinent info so I can get the most bang for my buck. I've looked online a lot and been to my local tack shop (the styles, selection and prices there leave a lot to be desired), so some personal recommendations would be fabulous.

Thanks in advance! :rose:

my favorite one is a longish narrow tipped riding crop. i bought it in a sex shop as opposed to a tack shop... the narrow tipped ones i've found in pet stores aren't as long and bendy. mine is verrrrry flexible. i like it ^^ i think it cost me $24, which didn't seem too bad.

The one on the website is more expensive than purchasing it in person... but I'm pretty sure that's the one I'm talking about.

my second favorite is a dressage whip i bought at petsmart. about the same length, very bendy, and stingy as hell. I'm fairly certain that's the one in the link there.

Good luck!

(editing to note that i prefer the narrow tipped ones to the fat tipped ones. that's my personal preference. my former PYL absolutely loved the bendy crops, and his enthusiasm added to my enjoyment of the longer crops.)

You might check out this site here. I did look at it for riding crops but for some reason they are not listed?? I know he has some because I saw them last night when he was vending at the fetish event. So maybe you could email him and ask for a picture of his crops. I think they are like 25 dollars or so, I picked up two of them at our Kink Karnival for 15.

We have three.

The one he likes best has a very narrow tapered shaft. It is flexible and he can get a precise aim with it.
The pain from it is very high and intense. Like nails on a blackboard. The pain remains localised to wherever it lands.

The other two are very similar and have thicker shafts, they land with much more of a thud and spreading pain.
They give a deeper pain and after a couple of seconds it is hard for me to identify exactly where on my ass they landed; the spreading pain makes the whole of my ass feel as if it is on fire.

All of them have those nasty leather swishy tip ends, which can be used to flick across nipples. That is something I really hate, especially when done fast. I would give anything at that point to have that stop.

A Domme I know uses that leather tip to do the same thing to her sub's balls.

Leather on small delicate areas is always going to be more fun for the giver than the receiver

. . .

I went to my local tack shop and was seriously disappointed until I found tucked away in a corner a thick hand-braided leather crop with engraved silver bands. It wasn't cheap, but the quality was exquisite.

I bought it for my husband as an anniversary present.

It made me feel proud to value the expression of my desire and my love so highly.

(I have a hard time buying things on the internet because I still need to touch the materials they're made of.)

Thank you for the suggestions, Chicklet, Leeroy, Shy and Eastern!

I really like the look of the narrow-tipped that Chicklet posted (though I'll search to find it cheaper, as is my custom...maybe ebay or one of the fetish/bdsm auction sites has the same/similar), and didn't even think to look at Petsmart.

The descriptions of the sensations are really helpful, as is everything else you guys have posted so far. :rose:

Check out this site. Just select "Riding Crop/Whips" in the Product Categories list on the left and you'll get several good, inexpensive choices.

Check out the Pet section, too, for some fun toys.

Oooh...gotta love those prices! Thanks for the tip! :) Do you have any of their crops?

I got one that I picked up at International Imports for 8 bucks.

Rose did not like it, so its for punishemnt only, now.

Is that a local store, a chain that might have a branch in WA, or a website (there are A LOT of "International Imports" on google)?

I got my first crop this past week. it's leather with a heart at the end. so cute. :) but unused so far.

Ooh, that sounds so cute! I don't know what it is about crops, but I love them.

You can't go wrong if you buy something meant and sold for a horse. Never buy anything with a non-bdsm use from a bdsm place. Or you'll pay the "sex toy" premium.

I've got a really nice English crop with the leather tip and leather handle and gold lettering. It ran me about 30 dollars it seems. But I've had it for a while now. If you just want something functional, I've seen small ones in tack stores for as low as 5 dollars.

There are a lot of "cheesy" ones available ...especially in sex shops...
Hmmmm I got the best ones at a major western store.. ONe that handles tack.

Check this one out..

I've found it's a pretty good hunch to avoid anything even remotely "cute".

Hmmmmmm .. I AM tempted by the "fly whisk" on that site..

I prefer tack shops over sex shops for real crops too. I've had good luck with this place: http://www.horsetackco.com/index.php--and they have lots of good crops, from fiberglass to leather.I'm on their email list, so I always know when they're having a sale, which is often. They aren't local, though.

but...but....but....I like cute. :( And I got it on clearance at a clothing store. I think it was left over from valentines. only set me back $10.59 with tax so I think it was a bargin.

I like cute too.

It always feels better if it is cute, preferably with pink bits and ribbons ;)

Me three! Cute is good.

Most of the toys are obviously FM's, but I have a couple of things, and I can see getting a crop like that too. Sort of like the girly section of our collection, if that makes any sense. Like some days I will bring him the crop, and maybe it would be that one, and some days he'll pick what he wants, and I'm sure it will be very manly. ;)

Thank you for this thread.

I've been planning on getting a crop to use on my pyl, and was just about to start a thread about it, and then i come and stumble across this one. So thanks to the OP, and I shall be paying VERY close attention here.

I have a couple of crops and I bought both in a shop of gods for horseback riding. Usually they have several models with different flexibility and size of the tip.

Ah! And are more cheap than in a sex-shop!

I think its a chain of trinket stores. I know its in the local mall, and I have seen it other places as well.

I just went and ordered one from agibean's site. It's the pig-skin crop... cheaper then most leathers, but just durable and fun. especially for those just starting to get into the lifestyle

Ahhhh ... The moral of this cautionary tale....

I knew someone who bought on the basis of price...closely followed by "cute"..
It worked reasonably well....Once..
The second time, it {it was "braided leather"} unwound about three strokes in... And exposed a VERY sharp wire core....
Fortunately, it didn't get exposed on a backswing... And the FemTop in question noticed it immediately..

*shrug*
It's a false economy...
I don't mind spending a few extra dollars up front....So I don't have to KEEP spending money to replace the "affordable" products.

Oh..One more thing...
If you can find a local tack shop... *grin* in rural areas try the local co-op..
It gives you a chance to actually "handle" the merchandise before turning loose of your hard earned money.
