They give you a small window into the person's world: A snippet of what they look like, or their style, or sense of humor. Of course, it could be a mistaken impression, but I've always found avatars interesting.

For instance, you might think from mine that I'm a devotee of Napoleon. But you'd be wrong. I do like neapolitan ice cream, though. And occasional naps.

There are many that I find intriguing (ex: Loradai, tigressnred, JtohisPB), some I find amusing (Netzach, OldGuy1026), a couple I think are erotic (MakeYourWhore, ecstaticsub), one that makes me miss summer (WD's watermelon), and one that makes me want to rip the rest of her purple top off.
