Avoid veiled euphemisms. Got it?

George Axelrod wrote a very funny book called "Where Am I Now When I Need Me?" about a fellow who worked for a sort of writer's school. He'd get erotic stories where the writer referred to her "pulsating virginia." His response: "Self-pity overwhelms me."

I've tried reading some of the "sex" scenes in my wife's romance novels. She'll talk about different imprints being "so racy." The purple prose and veiled euphemisms leave me longing for the simple fucking of Lit stories..

That was great article. It's one of the few articles which actually help, in my opinion.

I agree with what she says, but I have to confess, I'm guilty of that "throbbing cock" comment which she says to avoid. I really don't see what's wrong with phrases like "throbbing cock" or "swollen breasts" or anything like that.

And 6,000 words per sex scenes she writes? Wow.

Virginia is one of my neighbours. I may have to think about her in a whole new way.

I have sex scenes that long, many of mine come close to two lit pages, in my group sex stories they can be longer.

But I think that's because I describe a lot more than just fucking. I refer to the room, the bed, there's dialogue, there's conflict in some of them...

What there isn't though is purple prose. Sex is an act of passion, desire....lust. Keep the flowery words. Its fucking.

However....that purple prose...is why they can publish under mainstream Romance and not be classified as erotica.
