So I have a story thats been up since friday, currently its been viewed 11,104 times versus the < 100 times some poems I posted have been read.

What's the normal rate of readership like?

Hi, Muse.
That depends on the category, mostly. There may be other factors, but the category is the main one. Anal stories tend to get a lot of reads and so do incest and N/C. Non-erotic and Sci Fi get hardly any. Novels usually don't get very many either.

"Views" are not the same as "reads", by the way. that's just the number of times a story has been clicked on. Sometimes people will check a story, see it is multi-pages long and decide to go somewhere else.

Poems get a relatively substantially number of views if they are included in the reviews post but not usually otherwise. Even then, I have one poem that was reviewed, is on the hot list now and has been up for over two years and only has about 10,000 views. In that case, the number of reads is probably the same.

Some numbers for you

Boxlicker pretty much nailed it. My stories generally post between 5,000 and 30,000 page views in the first week, very category dependant. 10,000 is pretty average.

(I'm guessing this tread will be moved ;) )

My most viewed story is a NC story that is two years old. It has 93,000 views. It is not particularly high ranking, at 4.25. This may be because people go there expecting to find a story of gang rape and find it is just role-playing, with everybody having fun. A non-erotic story that has been around almost as long has 3,359 views as of now.

Thanks box I appreciate the insight.

Thanks to you also James and yeah I wasn't sure where to land this post, I should probably go ahead and delete it now :)

i've never really looked at views before, but wow! i just have.
my most views, predictably, is an illustrated at just over 130000, but that's just hits looking for a thrill over the pix.
incest stories will hit 50-70k
romance, about 5k, although a comp entry will hit higher
Box has it bang to rights though. Views doesn't mean reads, as the illustrated cat shows.
If a story hits and is close to the top of the 'New' list, it'll be hit proportionally higher I found.
Hey, the vagueries of Lit... you gotta love it.
Have fun whatever you post.

I know there is a difference between 'reads' and 'clicks' but, nevertheless, if you can get 100k or more punters looking at your scribblings, it makes writing worthwhile.

I would love to be a top writer, earning zillions as my latest, second-rate, blockbuster leaps to the top of the NYT chart. Dream on, babe.

Take the good with the bad, enjoy the pleasure your readership gets, ignore the loonies. . . and write!

Votes

Similar to the topic of views...I had a question about the votes on my control panel.

I noticed, quite frequently actually, that my vote count decreases. One minute it will say maybe 70, then go down to 68. Why does this happen?

Does anyone else have this problem? I'm curious as to if it's just me or an issue that's universal.

Thanks!

That's Lit doing a 'troll sweep'.

'Trolls' is our term for people who don't vote honestly. Usually 1s.

Lit occasionally goes through the stories and takes out votes it regards as illegitimate.

100,000 views. Christ, my most viewed story hasn't beat 30,000 yet.

The category does have alot to do with it, my most viewed story is Illustrated and received 74,436 views. The least view was in Humor & Satire and it received 866 views. Go figure.

I have one story, that I mentioned earlier, that is just about to reach 100,000 views. I don't know how many actual reads that is but I don't have many votes and no PC except the one I put there. Since posting this one, I have been asking for votes and feedback, and I get much more of both now.
